25 Reasons You Should NEVER Visit Croatia

Жыл бұрын

It was one of the quickest articles I have ever written.
Less than 25 minutes from start to finish.
And - full disclosure - beer was involved.
A client had asked me to write an article called 25 Reasons NEVER to Visit Croatia, a provocative title, with the clickbaity twist giving 25 reasons why Croatia was in fact an amazing place to visit.
After an afternoon on the Weissbier in Munich, I pulled out a cold one from the fridge and got to work, writing down the first 25 reasons that came into my head.
The client was pleased and - it seemed - so were his readers, as he reported a million clicks in the first 24 hours. It was EVERYWHERE!
I went back into the studio recently to record more videos for my new KZbin channel, Paul Bradbury Croatia Expert, and I thought it would be fun to make a video version of the original article.
So here it is, the latest from the Fat Vlogger. Are you coming to Croatia this summer?

My father was born near Arzano Croatia in a tiny village. My mother was born in St. Albans England . They got married in Canada where we live. In 1974 we went to Croatia and England. The first leg was to Croatia. My mom loved it so much she extended the first leg of the trip. Ever since she plays Croatian music and cooks a lot of Croatian food. She’s 84 now and when I go to her house I can always cheer her up by putting Croatian music on KZbin ! Enjoy life the best you can !

I personally work in a hotel in Dalmatia and I can confirm that after talking with guests from most of Europe, a large part of America, the Arabian Peninsula and Asia that Croatia has almost everything. In some cases, people are jealous of the Mediterranean climate, food, historical heritage, customs, indented coastline, and especially safety. When I started to work in tourism branch and before talking to people, I didn't know how unsafe and dangerous it has become in Europe... especially in England because the English tell me that the rate of stabbings and rapes is at the highest levels. The fast and capitalistic lifestyle has destroyed the small joys of people all over Europe and they can feel those things at least a little bit here. We are truly blessed, but to stop corruption and nepotism we have to be better people. Others will not do it for us!

A few years ago, a friend of mine from Zagreb told me Croatia was the most beautiful country in Europe, possibly the whole northern hemisphere. Being from the deep Rocky Mountains of Colorado, I contested that notion. Last November, I started looking at going on a European vacation for a week or two and stumbled onto Croatia again. Now, it’s all I think about. I’ve started learning the language, planning a trip for September, meeting up with my buddy and I’m honestly worried about NOT being able to get back on the plane to come home. It seems like a dream, and I’m waiting impatiently for my copy of Croatia; A Survival Kit for Foreigners (should be here Tuesday)!

Welcome mate! You will find everything needed to have stress free life here...we have 3 climate zones, continental european, mountainous which is simillar to Rocky mountains(in croatian is Stijenjak) but please dont go hicking on Velebit with flip flops.and unprepared!!! And mediterrainian climate along the coast. We have desert and volcano...My friend Paul doesnt know about volcano in Croatia...but there is one. So there is an piece of land for everyone to live at and enjoy the life here. Water...fresh water...you can drink from 99% of rivers and creeks here...perticulary mountain carst rivers. 45% of country is covered with forests....there are over 500 000 plant species here and tens of thousands of animal species. 3 venomous snakes...non as deadly as those you have in usa but still....nose horned viper(Poskok) if you will see it...leave it be.there are 2 more and the 3rd you will never see...its shy. There are common insects like bees wasps hornets and black widow spider....and some venomous fish and thats about it. There are bears wolves and linx here too. And well all of them are protected. And of course...if you will see, when you will be on vacation on the coast, european seal....dont disturb it! Even disturbing it can make your bank account suffer...fine is about 10 000$. So embrace the nature and harmony we are living with it and enjoy it. I bet you will think about staying here.cheers

Great point, being in no hurry. That is a great mindset overall. As a Zagrepčanin whole my life I often felt in a hurry of all sorts, but in time I learned to be slower and enjoy the slowness. ha same here, ok till i was 9 i lived in vukovar, it was fast buisy city, like any other big city, but way slower and clame than Zagreb, then i lived in Vinkovci, then Osijek, then in Iceland. and i noticed one thing, all capitals are insanity, people are so disconected with each others, the biger the city, mor epeople does not pay attention to anything excwept themselves. and it is always rushing, literaly people walk so fast, buy so fast.. Same is in keflavik and reykjavik, but soon as you go to city outskirts whole another story, same is with Amsterdamm London, any bigger city or capital where i lived or went occasionaly, as soon as you move out of them, evenif it just 1km out of it, whole different story.. I have cottage, old wooden house in north croatia, 20 or so km from Zagreb, i have feeling when i am there that time stands still, one hour there seems like 30 ninutes in Zagreb lol.. My my mum's parents are from Moslavina, from small town 80km from zagreb, everytime i come there i need time to adapt, coz everyone seems so slow, in stores, on the street.. Hurry, rushing, stress is a curse of capitals and ig cities...

All things said are very true, but more so for some parts of Croatia and less so for others. While a 10:00 AM coffee probably means 10:30 on the coast, and which I do respect and make sure I get to the cafe consistently late, in Zagreb for example it is expected to be much more punctual. In Zagreb and also some bigger cities in the north it is much more stressful and time constrained, probably what you were more accustomed to back in the UK.

Thank you very much for your kind words :) Also, we have another UNESCO listed Intangible World Cultural Heritage since December 14th 2021 and it is Falconry. Falconry is ancient sport of hunting with trained birds of prey. I had a luck to be a part of this falconry UNESCO journey since the day one in 1995 and the biggest support which we have on this journey was coming from England and our English falconry friends and I even established Croatian Falconer's Club with help of my friends from British Falconers Club🙂 Also, have been in England this summer with my family in Chesterfield and we were visiting amazing sites in Yorkshire and Shropshire, but a very good friend of mine, who is born from Chesterfield, will soon have his place over here in Croatia as he likes it very much 🙂 I must tell you that my opinion about England and English countryside is the same as you have about Croatia - Wonderful Place and Very Nice People 🙂🙂

Dear Paul, I'm absolutely amazed with every new video I see that you posted. You actually remind me of all the amaizing things I'm surrounded living here and beeing Splićanin. Yes, as you said, we're kinda born with that sence of "worshiping" our country and all it's beauties together with our lifestyle but living here a lifetime makes us sometimes "forget"/take for granted all the things you mention in your videos that we actually do know and usually do not forget when speaking with foreigners (proud People, as you could witness so many times 🤣). Anyway, thank you from a bottom of my heart. It's such a joy seeing and hearing all these things you say about our country and People. I believe every Croatian, if not, should be proud of having you here as I am. Thank you and hope you have also found your place to retire in (as emperor Diocletian had🤣😀). Best wishes from Split 😀

HAHA, "All their towns are made of stone". I remember I wanted to build a stone wall on one side of the property we bought. So, I called a contractor. "Oh, that's hard. Stone quarry is 25 kilometers away, we have to get a truck, then drive on the road. We also have to cross two bridges. You have no idea how hard that is to do. This is not "Amerika"..." Well, so much for my stone fence. Welcome to Hrvatska! The only time Croatians are in a hurry is when they're driving. Actually, I should qualify that; it's only cars with a license plate beginning with ZG who drive fast, and very recklessly. Others are not bad, actually. If you ever see a car accident during the "season" in Croatia, at least one car will have ZG plates.

I must disagree with the "only ZG license plates" ;) I myself do have those but usually while I easily and casually drive through backroads of an island old Golf 1-2's and even Renault 4's, very often without ANY license plates, overtake me in full speeds on roads 4-4,5m width while in a right curve without sight line :D

Number 10- have you visited recently Makarska, Kastela, etc, hell Postira has cruise ship that some call hotel in the center of the village. I am afraid it is not stone anymore. And that is sad. Betonizacija Dalmacije, done by people who had nothing to do with seaside ofc. But they have HDXZ connections Time is relative term in whole Mediterranean, in inlands they are on time, but they don't know how to say what time it is, because there is no 5 do 10, 11 is ' do ' 10. Or 9. P.S. City of Córdoba in Spain itself has 4 UNESCO sites. I mean, and my point is, Croats should be creating new ones, and not destroying with the concrete overbuilding surroundings of the existing ones.
