Sweet Potatoes are my favourite Permaculture plant because they have so many beneficial relationships with the garden. Growing sweet potatoes in your home garden will provide you with an abundance of food! The whole sweet potato plant is edible. You can eat sweet potato leaves! They are a great substitute for spinach.
You can grow sweet potato in the garden or in containers which makes it a great option for any home garden.

HI Holly. Thanks so much for this! Where would I find the more unusual sweet potatoes to grow please? I like the look of the Hawaiian one you showed. Thanks!

I find them in fruit and veggie shops or Asian grocery places often have them. Then either do the water method or straight to the garden

@@SustainableHolly Thank you, I'll keep an eye out! I've been looking out for black sapote in the asian shops to try before I commit to growing a tree.

How do you know when to harvest the tubers? 😊
@SustainableHolly

Usually you plant in spring and harvest in autumn. They start to come to the surface when the are ready. And the vines start to die off when it cools down. You want to harvest them before the frosts come (if you get frosts)

I live in WA as well. Carnarvon actually and I have started growing slips on my sweet potato (by accident) so I have put it in water to encourage more slips. I have been scared to buy any for awhile but I found some reduced and bought a heap and that is how I got slips starting to grow. Not sad about it at all. Just the opposite. I would love to know where to get the purple ones from please. The whole purple and the white and purple ones. An old Japanese lady also taught me how to cook the white sweet potatoes so they are very sweet and can be eaten on their own
