Hi Rod. We have 2 or 3 pension house in my old hometown. One time electricity went out in my parents house. My can't sleep without an aircon, so my husband and I borrowed my dad's motorbike and went to a pension house for the night. Cheap and clean, just no hot shower. Brings back memories, thanks Rod for sharing.

It is good to have that option Jane. I know of one expat who gets a hotel when there is a party or festival near him to get away from the noise.

Yo Rod : Please always give the current prices.. The viewers are savvy enough to know prices can change. Thank you .

Thanks Steve. I will try to do that more often. I have seen prices vary so greatly from $35 to over $100 for the same room in a few days that listed rates can be quite deceiving.

The second room is definitely something I can do for a couple of days. It's not bad for the price at all.

I agree M D. I stayed there a week in 2019 and it was reasonably quiet I think.

Rod this is such great news! Why spend your money today when you can save today and when they raise prices you'll have some left to spend also tomorrow! WOW those shiny floors! Thanks for your excellent hard work and I so appreciate the prices you include now as we'll be able to make the adjustments to the price in accordance with the background of obviousness based on when we intend to book a room! Sincerely, BM

Rod, both of those spots would be adequate for me... I was surprised they had flat screen TV's in them.. Hot showers are nice, but in the summer time, a regular shower can be refreshing, maybe a couple of times during the day.. Here at our house we don't have a hot water heater, and our two water tanks are outside.. It can be a little cool in the morning, but mid afternoon, and later, it will be warm.. Anybody would be happy with these places during Sinulog, as you know, rooms can be hard to find... Thanks for the video...

Thanks Bruce. Prices could go up with the increased demand but I wouldn't think by too much except during the festival.

👍 great value for money considering the location. Your comment about genuine pensioners is timely - with the recent visa regulation changes in Thailand, many expat retirees (including a friend of mine who was living in Phuket) who couldn’t come up with 800k Thai baht as a bank deposit had to leave, in late June. I read there were 70k expats living in Thailand in 2017, so if we say 5 % of them were required to leave, that’s a pool of several thousand pensioners who may have nothing and no-one to go back to in their home country, some of whom may also be facing hardship. Many may also prefer a warmer climate - my friend, age 74, feels the cold here in Western Australia. I think the pension house industry and also the Mom & Pop resort industry in the Philippines (and many of these places tend to struggle) could be enticing this market to relocate to PI. It might also create jobs, as many of these clients may one day need palliative care. There are plenty of carers, nurses, etc in PI. A resort could market themselves on Facebook as a “retirement resort” (rather than an age care facility - especially if red tape is a issue). Just top of mind thoughts. Thanks for your informative video briefs. With the advent of the gig economy, remote work from home jobs , the expat drift to SEA is only going to rise. Expat aged care is an industry whose time is coming. Cheers mate .

Thanks Paul. Very good observations and thoughts. I think many expats from Thailand will be choosing the Philippines from what I have heard from some of them.
@travel-trade5 жыл бұрын
Amazing Philippines thank you sir. The tourist visa option - thus avoiding the retirement visa categories that require a bank deposit, say for the first 36 months anyway - would be a major drawcard. An agency that provided personalised assistance (not just information) for expats to relocate to PI might be a good startup idea for someone. Eg, find them accomodation to match their budget. You would be fantastic - you are familiar with what’s out there, such as the Brezlin Apartelle, San Jose Pension House, etc. Perhaps start a Facebook group for expats wanting to retire to PI, and offer services around that. Take care.

Rod if I was there traveling as long as it was clean and a single room for myself I would stay with no problem at all. I need hot water though LOL. They look decent to me
@AmazingPhilippines15 жыл бұрын
I think many travelers are not going to spend much in the hotel so a clean room, bed and shower will do. Others prefer to pay a bit more for an upgrade.

Rod that's the information many people have been looking for a place to stay in the heart of Cebu city for only $12 us dollars a night. A clean air condition double room with cable TV own bathroom. Did you ask there monthly rates ?. It has to be the cheapest pension house in cebu city. If there is two of you it's only $6 per person thats less than the price of a dorm bed in a backpackers hostel in cebu. If anyone knows of any place with a lower rate anywhere in cebu Island let's us all know.
@AmazingPhilippines15 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. One bad thing about advertising a place like this is that the demand goes up and with it the price over time.

I think the word "Pension" is actually a mistranslation of the Italian word "Penzione", which means a bed and breakfast accommodation. I have seen them in many places in Italy and lithe counties in Europe. (I think really, the word is literally "a room" or a small room.) I like your videos and enjoy seeing other places in the Philippines. I live on Luzon and don't get around much to other places. Oh, there is one thing, which I hear most of us Americans saying, "a hot water heater". As was pointed out to me by a Filipino, if the water is hot, why does it need to be heated? Isn't it just a water heater to make water hot?
@AmazingPhilippines15 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight Ken. You are correct about the "hot water heater" also.

That will be tough to find in the city for a "decent" place but you can probably find small apartments or "boarding house" for that much. More likely to find it in the country areas.
