I always tell them that they will have to wait for a special occasion like a birthday or Christmas if they want it as a gift and try to explain how much work it is and that I pay for the art supplies I would have to use in a piece. But I am a weak person and love to make gifts so I make a lot for them anyway...

I'm a v small and young artist (i'm 19 & self taught) and I can definitely say that putting my art out there is really intimidating, I have no idea what I'm doing lol, but what you said at the beginning of the actually helped me a lot. I'm trying to get better at just going for it, why not right? I have a redbubble and some of my goals for next year are to put better designs up and maybe start doing commissions? Anyways, I really like your art and how encouraging & supportive you are in your videos. Thanks for making this video

The one thing I learned the first time I did one was make sure you have stock, I ran out half way through and had to leave. It was a great problem to have but I would have made more money had I brought more stock.

I started doing craft shows to pay for my supplies. I only did one or two locally. I would sell watercolor bookmarks and that alone would pay for my cheap watercolor paper. I always did art and then crafts. And this year I added prints of my artwork to my booth so we'll see how it goes!

This video has inspired me to make another push into my artistic career next year. I have to wait for my new health stuff (the TTP diagnosis and getting it under control) but I, at the least want to push myself into getting a print shop. I'm not sure anyone will want prints of my work, with Inktober, and my dive into succulent paintings before hand, my Instagram followers have climbed significantly, and I'm hoping it's telling. I have thought of making prints in the past (and I have, but no one bought them back then) but I really think that outsourcing that, despite the fact that I always want to do everything myself, and because of my health, would be what's best for me. Besides, I really like the idea of "passive income" lol. Edit: another art avenue I'm personally curious about, is how to get into selling things like colouring pages and the like.

I've found most of these hard as heck because you have to nail down the marketing of it to get it to work
@MiraByler6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the marketing is sometimes more than 50% of the work. If you enjoy it though, it's worth it. It was really hard for me to get started. I think it took a solid year for me to really nail stuff down. I struggled with being consistent at first too.
@LindaUrsin6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is :) I've been present and consistent for many years (2011 plus, I had a following before that too) and I get it done, even though it's not that fun. The problem is finding the words that work for the people who would buy that kind of art :) I've tried a lot of the "best advice" out there and also gotten coaching. Still hasn't worked.

Thank you for this video. I'm an art student and I'm loving every minute of it. But there's always that doubt in the back of the mind, what if this all leads to nothing? I can paint and draw so many images but then what? They sit in my house and collect dust? But I'm driven to create. I changed my Instagram from a private couple posts every few months to a public mostly art driven couple posts a week, at least. And it's becoming popular. (Popular for me, at least! 😂) So, I feel like it's time for a next step. More of these videos would be fantastic, if you're of a mind to do them.
@MiraByler6 жыл бұрын
I think it’s completely normal and understandable to ask yourself that question. In fact, sometimes the fear driven from that very question motivates me to stay on top of things and market my work. You’re doing the right thing by advertising your work on Instagram! I shared somewhere else in the comments, but I’ll share here too. It took me about a solid year to get started and build up my Instagram, Twitter, Etsy, etc. Everything fluctuated so much at first. There were weeks where I couldn’t keep up with making and shipping prints, and some months where I’d only get maybe 2 or 3 orders. It was confusing and discouraging at first, but it was a really great time for learning! I look back at the beginning steps of starting my art business and cherish all that I have learned. You can totally do it!! 💜

These are so so helpful! Thanks Mira! :D Just a cheeky question as I'm a very small art KZbinr, when you got your first brand deal, how many followers did you have? And do you approach brands for your brand deals or do they come to you? I'm curious because I have a little under 5k subs at the moment and not sure when would be too early. I'm a little nervous about approaching brands!🙈Thanks!
@MiraByler6 жыл бұрын
I don't remember how many followers I had when I got my first brand deal, but I think I was approached first. Something that really helped me was to make sure I had a website with my portfolio on it. I need to update it at the moment, but I have gotten quite a few opportunities from that. Usually brands will find your KZbin channel, but may want to see your portfolio as well! If you want to approach a brand, I would totally suggest making a media kit to present to them as well! I hope that helps. Also, congrats on being close to 5k! That's quite a big milestone. :)
