Mice are very sensitive to smell. The reason for this is that mice and rats have a poor sense of vision so their other senses must be heightened in order for them to survive.
Whether you're trying to keep unwanted mice and rats out of your home, or you live with a pet mouse, watch this video to learn about the 12 smells that mice and rats hate the most.

_____________________________
Peppermint
Mice hate the smell of peppermint and will avoid areas where it’s used. Many natural rodent repellents contain peppermint oil because the strong scent irritates rodents’ nostrils.
Vinegar
This homemade mouse repellent contains acetic acid, a scent that mice are highly sensitive to.
Once you've located droppings and feces of rats and mice, you'll know which areas they visit often.
Another way to get rid of rats using vinegar at home is to soak cotton balls in vinegar and put them in the places where they appear.
Chilli power
Chilli powder, chilli oil, and hot sauce in general are among the odors that mice hate.
This is because chili contains Capsaicin, a natural compound that irritates mucous membranes and eyes.
Ammonia and Chlorine
Ammonia and Chlorine are very common chemicals in the home as they are found in various cleaning products such as window and glass cleaners, disinfect sprays, laundry detergents, dishwashing detergents, bleach, and all-purpose cleaners.
Even though these chemicals have a strong smell that can be tough for us, it's way worse for mice. Breathing in these smells or eating products with these chemicals can seriously harm a mouse. So, it's important to keep these products away from your pet mice.
Mothballs
Mothballs are small balls of chemical pesticide made of Naphthalene. They have a pungent odor which is why they are commonly used as a moth repellent. Mothballs are harmful to humans if swallowed, or if large amounts of fumes are inhaled.
Although Mothballs can be harmful to your pet mice, they aren't powerful enough to get rid of unwanted mice and rodents in your home.
Citrus
Another scent that mice hate is citrus. Mice do not like the smell of citrus oils and will avoid areas where they smell them. Citrus oils are frequently used as a natural repellent for mice or rats. You can make your own homemade mouse repellent using essential oils like orange or lemon oil.
Predators Scent
As tiny rodents, mice and rats are vulnerable to many predators in the wild. Owls, hawks, snakes, lizards, dogs, foxes, and cats. Due to their vulnerability, mice have learned to smell their enemies and avoid areas where these predators are present. One way they detect the presence of predators is through the scent trails left by their urine.
If you live with rats or mice, along with other pets like cats or dogs, we recommend ensuring they are separated from any areas their urine may be present, and that they are cleaned with enzymatic products.
Cinnamon.
Cinnamon is another natural repellent that mice hate. If you have unwanted rats or mice in your home, you can sprinkle cinnamon powder around your home or burn cinnamon incense.
You can also stash some cinnamon sticks in drawers, closets, cabinets, and underneath furniture.
Perfume and alcohol
Perfumes are made with different components, among which are distillates of essential oils from plants and alcohol.
They often contain sulfur and other inorganic compounds.
Perfumes have different aromas that are pleasant for humans but intolerable for many animals including rats and mice.
In small rodents such as mice, irritation of the nasal passages is a common reaction so they prefer to stay away from these odors.
Eucalyptus oil
A great deterrent for not only mice but insects too. Eucalyptus oil has been proven to have strong repellent effects against rodents. It can significantly reduce the likelihood of an infestation when applied around the house.
Onions
We all have garlic and onions in our homes, and such smells are repulsive to mice and rats.
You can chop up an onion and place it in areas where you see evidence of mice, such as droppings or nests. The smell will keep them away from the area where it has been placed.
Lavender
Mice hate the smell of lavender. You can use a lavender-scented spray or even better, you can grow a lavender plant, which will repel mice from your home naturally.
Certain sounds
In addition to these scents, rats and mice are known to be sensitive to specific sounds.
There is evidence to suggest that certain types of high-frequency sound can be effective in deterring rats and mice. Rodents have a broader range of hearing, and these sounds cause distress to them.

I’m shocked that this video named ‘ammonia-and-bleach’ together, as opposed to listing each one separately. Some might think you’re suggesting mixing the two. THE VAPOR FROM AMMONIA MIXED WITH BLEACH IS DEADLY WHEN INHALED. The fumes of either chemical alone can be dangerous with inadequate ventilation. This video should make that clear.

The two chemicals mixed together make the equivalent of WW1 mustard gas. There was a woman in CA that died many years ago from mixing the two together to clean eggs off her house that some kids had thrown at her house.

Phosgene gas, also known as mustard gas, is actually a byproduct of bleach when combined with ammonia. A few other elements that are created as a byproduct include hydrochloric acid, chlorine gas and hydrazine. WTH are they thinking, listing those two chemicals together without warning of how deadly this is!

@@user-ly1bi3qi3p. We used a mint oil homemade spray mixed with/ water for a spider infestation in a property we bought. It worked great. I’m using chemicals to kill rats and mice. Rodents are a problem due to fruit trees where I’m at. I also bought a big bag of rat/mice deterrent pellets to put inside at the base of my garage door. I think the pellets are mint scented. The problem w/ the homemade natural stuff is you need to redo the application constantly. Blocking how they get in is the big problem. In my old house the garage door doesn’t seal well. Rats and mice nest in the attic & my walls. Real cinnamon & chili powder is way too expensive for rats & mice. Fake cinnamon is common for cheap - no scent or taste. I’m using bait boxes outside. Talon G is fantastic but unaffordable, the online seller wants u to buy 2 buckets, for about $150.00 each as a minimum purchase. My local seller closed shop. So I have 3 or 4 different baits. I just bought peanut butter flavored little blocks that I can throw in the attic and garage. I’m worried about other animal outside, so I used bricks to weigh the bait box down, & block it in so other animals can’t move the box.

We moved into an older home. As I started cleaning the home, I found a lot of mouse droppings under the base board heaters. At the time we had 2 cats. I would scoop their boxes, putting the waste in plastic grocery store bags. My hubby would take the bags and tuck them discreetly around the outside of the house. In the 20+ years we lived here we only had one mouse sighting and that was within weeks of our initial move. Cheap, simple and completely free.

Our kitty patrols our house and yard. He is carrying out the proud tradition of thousands of years as companions to humans. He is a brave guardian-cat keeping down the vermin and earning his keep as he does it - just his smell alone is a deterrent. He likes to bring them in to show us how skillful he is, I'm sure he wonders why we don't join in because we take it away and out of the house. lol. Gotta love those brave cats.

There are two types of “peppermint” oil sold…both come from the plant Genus Mentha. These two are Mentha piperita and Mentha arvensis (Corn Mint). The one you want is Mentha piperta. It costs about twice what Mentha arvensis costs, but it is the one recommended for use as a rodent repellant. If a product doesn’t clearly state which oil it is, you can assume it is the less effective/cheaper oil….

I just ordered some online a few months back, that's when I noticed there was two kinds. I got the cheaper one, and honestly, it's a very slight difference. If I didn't know before, I probably wouldn't have noticed. I think it'll be fine, it's strong just like the peperita kind.

@@nancys2839 Definitely use it. just posted above, I used a solution on some cotton balls and a spray bottle for my riding mower that mice had nested in, and my car where a squirrel was about ready to build a nest or stash for his nuts. Knock on wood, no problems since. And I used the cheaper version. See my other comment, not much of a difference. Spray around your wheel wells and tires, spray the hood of the engine inside, I was hesitant to spray it directly on my engine, but I did put a few cotton balls in there and closed the hood, plus I wasn't going to be driving for a few days. Put some inside the car too in the glove box, near the vents, etc.

Okay. Cinnamon and Chili powder? NOPE! I tried those two, spreading them along the baseboards. Then turned the light soff, and just waited. Sure enough, out came the mouse, AND SHE SAT RIGHT IN THE POWDER OF EACH. Yes, sat right in the stuff. Washed her face with her front paws, which had obviously been right in the powder because her footprints were in the chili and later the cinnamon powder. So, surprise surprise, some mice seem to just love chili powder and cinnamon.

I use a diffuser for essentialmoils. Sweet orange oil is one I like and when I kept it on at night that’s when they avoided my house. I also blocked all the little holes I could find in the wooden floor, and sprinkled those areas with essential oil from mentha peperita. I had professionals over, that was very effective but on the long run the little creatures found ways to make new holes in the wooden floor. Even in houses with concrete flooring you have to block every tiny hole. Except mice can’t make new holes in concrete. They can in old houses. So it really is effective to use smells they don’t like. I cleaned the spots where I had found droppings with essential oil too. No more mice this winter.

As a person that has cats in a neighborhood full of mice and rats (a whole lot of rats) I can say you won't have rodents if you have cats. But if you have dogs, and feed them outside, you definitely will have rats. So many times I have seen rats eating out of the dog's bowls while the dogs either watched or ignored them. They didn't even try to chase them off. One day I saw a huge rat and a bunch of smaller ones on my neighbor's porch going into the dogfood bag and taking food back to the nest they had under the porch. I have only seen one mouse on my property and it appeared when my husband brought home a rolled up carpet he found. As soon as he unrolled it out on the lawn a mouse ran out and in less than a second my cat caught it. Cats work.

*Call the health dept.* They’ll make sure your landlord complies with his obligation to keep his home rodent free. You may want to suggest to him first, you are being forced to do so, b/c of his lack of taking care of this health issue, he is forcing you to live with. To give him one last chance to do what the law says he’s to do. Look on line to see your tenant rights in your state. They vary, but in most states, tenants rule. Which is why it can be brutal to find a place, landlords charge up the rear. They’ve had a lot of tenant issues & that will reflect toward future tenants, to try to assure a smoother experience. I have a radio playing on a Christian channel 24/7 for a couple yrs now, in my basement. At first it seemed to work. Now, I think they’re praising the Lord for the food, shelter & warmer conditions out of the cold.😂 They raided my bird food & stash I had there a couple weeks back. Left a real mess! Going to have to poison them. Too many of these home made remedies don’t work. Headed to the hardware store tomorrow for some. Even the new D-con removed the main ingredient that was so lethal to them. Now, it’s a kinder, milder way. I love all animals, just not the ones that should be outside, invading my basement inside. I even had weasels a couple yrs back!!! Never in my life did I ever hear of that! BUT...had no mice issues. ;) Wasn’t worth the trade off. I wound up pouring bleach down the holes they tunneled through via the outside shower & in the opposite driveway at the chimney. That seemed to take care of them. No prob since. But the mice are back.... :( I would have left the weasels, but once I realized they multiply like rabbits & can be a real hazard in homes, I had no choice but to get rid of them. I also had a small, older dog that I read they could attack, if they felt threatened by it. The way out to the yard directly, is through the bsmt here. And I would hear them scurrying, when we would head down, sometimes. I even caught one peaking out at me once.😂Very cute, but....no thanks. I felt horrible about the bleaching, but it definitely took care of them. Dumped a big container down each hole. Left several minutes between, so if any were in there, they could run out the other hole. Found out my covered wood pile & bunny population were big draws for them. They obviously decided to move into more accommodating conditions. It explained the dead/gutted buns, incl babies, I was finding in my yard & outside shower.😭 Horrible sight! Looked like a ritual took place on them! No more now. Bunnies are back & happy here again. Wood pile reduced & moved to plastic bins, too. So, I highly recommend straight bleach if anyone has a weasel issue. They can contort themselves to fit in an opening the size of a quarter, so don’t ever think you’re immune! And their _razor sharpe_ teeth can easily cut through wood, if needed. The things you learn when you have to. ;)

one thing that seems to work (no, not peppermint) is chili powder. They get it on their feet and if I scatter it in their favorite drawers, they only walk through it once and don't come back. I would imagine it tastes as bad as it smells...

Haha. Some of this may be true but just advising we manufacture a very potent rodenticide which is cinnamon flavoured. It is one of the most palatable rodenticides in the New Zealand market. I suggest it may be concentration related as to whether it is an attractant or repellent

I found a rodent nest under the intake manifold of our Ford SUV, removed it and when I had some work done on the vehicle they said they found another nest and would I like them to place a bar of Irish Spring soap in the space. They did and noe two year later, I am working on an issue with the windshield washers and just happened to notice the box of Irish Spring soap and a rodent nest under the intake manifold again. So Irish Sprig don't work. I read the same thing on a tractor forum about using it as a deterrent inside tractor cabs.

I can vouch for the peppermint oil. But some on a paper towel or cotton ball. Also works for squirrels. One morning I looked out the window and saw a squirrel jump into my wheel well on my car. Then I realized, it looked it knew exactly where it was going, and never exited. I ran out there, popped the hood, and it looked at me like wth?? and took off the way it came. No nuts or damage, so must've caught it in time thankfully. I made a strong alcohol, water, peppermint solution up and sprayed my tires, wheel well, around the hood, engine kept a cotton ball soaked with it in the hood and tried to remember to remove it when I drove. Later that day, went to start up my mower, and there was a mouse nest in the intake.....and in my shed. So sprayed around those and all over my mower as well. No mice since I've been doing that. I may try the cinnamon sticks with few drops of peppermint oil on it. The cotton balls need to be refreshed every few days, maybe that'll last longer.
