Our adult son was visiting and we took him out to breakfast. $85!!!!!!!!! My husband and I both cook and to us, it is insane to eat in restaurants a lot. However, we get very negative reactions from others as though something is wrong with us. One woman said, "Well, do you just order in?" as though the whole concept of walking into the kitchen and making a sandwich was just asking too much of any human being.

When I’m watching tv that has commercials, I get up and play a game with myself to see how much of a chore I can get done before they are over. Can I sweep the floor before they are done? Can I dust a room? Can I put away the dishes? It takes a chore and makes it into a game and it adds more steps into my day. It’s a win win.

We love watching KZbin-ers with similar interests (like your wonderful channel). Also, we have found the best movies on KZbin. From the 1930’s to about 1959 are the BEST movies and the majority of them we have never heard of! Thank you for your informative and encouraging content.

Frugality with ethics, perfect! I may be out of step with the world, but am very content. I have never had a streaming service or internet linked to the TV. I have Freesat (I am in the UK), so just paid for the dish and box, then no more costs. My annual entertainment is my TV licence. Beyond that, I only use free things on the computer. I have never had a gym membership (the idea of being in a room full of people getting sweaty and going nowhere really doesn't appeal). I don't go to the cinema, everything will come on the TV for free at some point (I can have the volume at a level I like and see to do my knitting while I watch!!). I do take one magazine by subscription, and look forward to receiving it every 2 months. I have one handbag - why bother with more! I enjoy the simplicity of it all. I do have a lot of craft materials, but these are mostly acquired second hand. I have things around me that remind me of people I love, I don't need to bother with what 'the Joneses' have. I concentrate on growing old disgracefully!

Thank you for not having a lot of sponsors on your channel. Especially thank you for not having sponsorships of things you wouldn't use yourself. As for how we're different from much of society: We don't feel like we have to have the latest and greatest electronic gadgets. We have older & cheaper smart phones, we don't have cable or streaming. We watch the free stuff -mostly on youtube but occasionally on other channels, we read books, we have conversations. And we're driving a vehicle that's almost 17 years old. We take things ( garden vegetables, used clothes, used furniture, ) that others have too much of or no longer want. We pass on what doesn't work for us. We're happy with all of this. We don't feel deprived.

Last year my neighbor's 9 year old son was growing flower and vegetables starts from seeds for his family as a homeschool project. I paid him a dollar per zinnia start, about $25.00 total as an incentive and had beautiful cut bouquets for my home and office from summer to fall. It was well worth the money spent to have the flowers and give him a little fun money. His family even had excess of tomatoes and cucumbers to give me and they set up a free table of their abundance to give anyone who drove by. Your flower packets reminded me of the joy from those bouquets and the many compliments from coworkers. Hopefully my flowers will reseed or maybe I can hire him again for plant starts.

I find most of my clothes at either one of them. I even find pretty tablecloths, and curtains for almost nothing. I find good like new books. When I want to spruce up an area of my house I find cute thrift store items. For our bathroom I found a beautiful shower curtain for $2. (I do shop my own home first, and move pictures, and curtains around.) It is fun to see how creative you can get without spending much money!! Thanks for a reminding me about flower seeds. We try never to buy anything new. Just recently we bought an ottoman for our guest bedroom (the kind that sits at the end of the bed) from someone who didn't need it anymore for $50 - the ottoman new would have cost well over $200. Shortly before we moved to our house in Salem MA (from the Hudson Valley), I went to the local Habitat for Humanity Restore and purchased an entire master bedroom set for $250 (we gave away our old set because it was too big to move). Absolutely beautiful, solid wood, very sturdy furniture - must better quality than much of the furniture you could purchase new. We try only to buy items we NEED (not want), and between the buy-nothing groups and Facebook Marketplace, and of course thrift stores, there is almost never a reason to buy new. Better for our wallets and MUCH better for the environment.

My sister and I take cuttings from each other's plants and propagate them to landscape our yards. We recently took one Liriope (I have about 15 already in my front yard that were already in the front beds when I moved here) that was overgrown and needed to be removed anyway and separated it into about 30 "babies" to root and will be transplanted into our beds and to created new landscaped areas in our yards. We are doing this with several other plants we have. We save rain water to water them. Also the plants we choose are sun and drought tolerant (we live in Florida) and they grow full so they keep weeds out of our beds so no mulch needed... We're also rooting ground cover 😊. We love gardening. It's a great hobby, physical activity and we do it with very little money. 😊

Im always flabbergasted by people who NEVER put there clothes out to dry outside on a clothesline. I live in one of the wettest parts of the UK (which is already a wet place) and never use a tumble dryer. I collet washing until there’s a breeze-it doesn’t have to be sunny-and even if they are only partly dry, they finish off inside, either on a clothes horse, on radiators in the winter, or over the backs of doors and bannisters in the case of sheets and bedding.

I do the cleaning and she does all my sewing. She enjoys it, has the talent, and feels it's a fair trade of labor. Her floors shine and I don't toss clothing, quilts or curtains! Also..netflix has a higher teir where it's all ad free...you pay more AND they've decided to take all of the popular programs to that teir. I agree with everything that you are doing to save money. A roll of paper towels lasts me 6 months. I use it to pick up hair balls the cat spits up or to quick wipe up something really nasty that I just want to dispose of. That paper can be composted. Napkins come from the few times I go to food place when I travel. They usually include far more than I will use and I never buy them. I mostly wait until I finish and then wash in the kitchen sink and use a towel. My dishwasher has 1/2 load and a clean 30 setting that is used for glassware and items that are not that dirty. The washing machine weighs the clothes to calculate the amount of water needed. I will buy some shredded cheese for the convenience like mozzarella. I purchase Christmas and Birthday gifts all year when I see something I think someone will like at a good price. My holiday shopping is usually finished by Oct. These items don't have to be new, but if used they need to be exceptionally good. I still use the percolator coffee pot that we got as a wedding gift in 1967. My daughter now uses the one that belonged to her grandmother.

I did not realize how many people recognize quilting for the art form that it is and what a bargain a signed original work of art is for less than $1,000.00. I have my work cut out for me - literally.

I don't buy drinks at work. So many people I work with buy 2 or 3 drinks per day ,easily spending 3 to 5 dollars. That is 15 to 25 dollars a week for drinks. I use a 64oz reusable glass water bottle washed and refilled daily with ice water. 1 week using my cup paid for itself.

thank you folks for keeping us all sane with commonsense! I use to buy magazines, but no more. One weekend morning a month, I make a cup of coffee and take it with me to the library~ spending time reading their magazines... if there is a picture I like (love home decorating and cooking!) or receipe, I take a picture of it with my phone.... its my guilt pleasure without costing me money :)

I appreciate your integrity Emmy & Paul! I got a meal service plan as a gift and didn’t find it eco friendly and economical and like making my own quick, easy go to meals. An appliance repairman told me to only fill a washer / dryer half full to extend its life, which I now do. I use an add on bidet to cut down on toilet paper and it’s more hygienic too. I still use paper towels for dirty jobs, but pretty colored washcloths from Dollar Tree for cleaning the counter or table. I will try to use my fabric napkins more. Thanks everyone for sharing your ideas.💗

Auntie Emmy and Uncle Paul have a wonderful video as always, and I cracked up at the food prep meal kits segment - I have never ordered one of those for the same reason - it seems like such a waste of money. If I'm going to pay someone to prep the food, I might as well go to a sit-down restaurant. I hope some of the wonderful apps and things (hello, Happy Planner) will discover you and thank you with at least free stuff to give away. One thing we don't buy a lot of is clothing - I try to wear pieces that will last and are good quality. I love seasonal sweaters and clothing, and I ensure I store them correctly so I can enjoy my Christmas and Valentine's Day sweaters when the seasons come around. No one stores clothing back anymore - and I think it's important.

Hi there! I do ALL THE THINGS you suggested. I have a friend in Nevada, who pays a fortune for water. She collects the "warming"up the shower water and uses it to water plants and wash her vegetables..I have tried it, and I saved about 10 gallons a day. We use this otherwise wasted water to fill the pots on our wood stove, for quick mopping and to wash our vegetables. I have had the same $6.00 iny wallet since Thanksgiving. You rock ❤

We do our own maintenance and also help out our neighbours, family and friends with maintenance too. Also driving and lifts. And they do the same for us. For example.. my neighbour picked up a lounge I bought at a thrift store. And I took him and picked him up from hospital when he had a procedure. Huge savings for both of us.

We have never paid full price for a new car. Our lifestyle doesn't have the need for a new car and my husband is wonderful at finding us good used cars. Thankfully he is a great mechanic. Also when we were young the best advice our parents gave us was to not go house broke. We found a house that we could afford on less then one salary. It was great advice and now after renovation it looks great. And the journey was half the fun.

There is so much out there that cost little to nothing. I don't have a dishwasher and never have. I really never saw the need for one. I also don't use the recommended amount of soap for a load of clothes. I do use fabric softener because I hang most of my clothes to dry, and it makes them softer and easily removes wrinkles. However, I dilute it with water to about a 4th of full strength. One 32 oz container lasts me for over a year. Thank you for putting the information out there for us. I learned new ways to be frugal from you.

During the pandemic I signed up to the box subscription for the first time. We were not allowed to leave our home for 6 months each lockdown, (had 3), so we were stuck and this was the only way we could get food. I must say, it ended up being frugal. We paid $68 with delivery a week for 2 ppl 3 protein meals. I made pasta other days. So we didn’t spend more than $34 each a week on food. I stretched those meals though. They gave u minced lamb or beef as an example, and I supplemented that meat with fillers and tripled all the recipes with grated carrots, oats, breadcrumbs or rice. So only by doing this did it become worth it. If you do not cook normally, the food they give is not enough on its own. You need to be creative and add to them to make meals stretch. But all recipes were really good. Not one fail. It was convenient, fun, and saved us. But yes you get more if you shop in person.

We are the same about sponsorships here. We have done very few. Joel actually has the type of ear buds that you were talking about, I think. I bought them for him as a safety precaution because when we lived in Houston, I worried about him running on the streets. I wanted him to be able to hear the traffic. A lot of runners use those to hear the music for pacing but to still keep themselves safe on the streets. If you don’t run or walk with ear buds typically, it wouldn’t be a need for sure.

That is what makes each of our journeys so perfect and unique! For Joel they are a safety solution!

Emmy, how could you show the box of the delicious mozzarella sticks that my husband, my dog and I ate on Sunday and Monday night? 😆 They were purchased on sale and eaten with Buffaranch that I got on clearance. Actually, I have not been to a sit down restaurant to eat since March 2020 and really don’t plan on dining anywhere with table service. The prices of restaurant food makes me lose my appetite.

I loved your list Emmy & Paul. So encouraging, inspiring and really smart advice. It's just a marvellous way to live. I love your channel. One of the things my husband and I don't do is go to the cinema. Instead, if there's a nice film that's really worth seeing, we wait until it eventually gets televised, or comes out on dvd at a low price. Cinemas are very expensive! So are the theatres, so we don't go to them either. May God greatly bless you both too.❤

Much respect coming your way❗️When l was a young woman, I began using rags ONLY to save money. I knew little about the environment back then, well before recycling was even a word in our vocabulary. It saved a LOT of money over time, because using rags became habitual & decades later, I’m still using them. As mentioned in the video, eliminating the CYCLE of BUYING/USING ONCE/TOSSING disposable items, finding alternative methods, & developing new habits, all address some of the waste stream in our landfills. Most of suggestions here cost nothing to try, of very little, & can be built upon over time, as new habits develop. Thank you for listening.

Do not buy packages of aluminum foil and only use it one time. Take those pieces of aluminum foil and wash them in hot water and dish soap. The pieces of aluminum foil make great scratchers to remove burnt on and or stuck on food. Bleach is good to help unclog sinks. Keep jars that come to your home with food in them. After the jar is emptied, take the glass jar and wash it in the sink in hot water. You have already paid for the convenience of using the jar so why toss it just to satisfy some recycling nonsense. Wash all Ziploc bags in hot water and dish soap and Re-use them again!
