Good evening. I watched your two videos about the must-do's and must-knows when pursuing a career as a curriculum developer. I have always believed that people's paths cross for a reason. And now I see why I've been drawn to your videos. As you know from the comments I've made for your other videos, much of what you have shared is very helpful to me. I didn't know until now that you are a curriculum developer. I have a M.S. Degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment that I earned 7 years ago in hopes of working at the various public school districts in that capacity. My bachelor's degree is in Exceptional Education and I'm certified in Elementary Education, Middle Grades English and English 9 - 12. I also have a business degree. With that said, I plan to retire in the next three years and I'd like to continue writing curriculum in other areas aside from TPT. I'd like your input on my chances of establishing a connection with a curriculum company and some company's you would suggest.

Hi Michelle! I am excited to hear that you are interested in a career in curriculum development! There are a lot of opportunities available for people who are creative and passionate about helping teachers and students. I am unable to share lists of my clients and curriculum companies that I work with. I sign non-disclosure agreements for most projects and have to be cautious about what I share due to those agreements. If you are interested in getting started, I recommend that you do what I shared in this video by getting onto job sites and websites for curriculum companies that you are interested in working for, and searching for jobs. As I mention in this video, it does take a lot of time in the beginning to find jobs and build relationships, but it does get much easier with time. This has definitely given me a good idea of some of the things I would be going through as a curriculum developer. I think it would be a great fit for me and a great use of my best teaching skills. I feel like my strengths lie in curriculum, especially when given the time to focus on it and make it work for my class. My struggles come with managing behaviors and teaching high quality lessons at the same time. My ADD makes me hyper focus on the act of teaching content and struggle to manage behaviors and engagement at the same time. When creating curriculum, who own's it? When you create it, can it be shared with multiple clients or once the client has it, is it their's and you can't sell it to anyone else?
@Vestals21stCenturyClassroom4 жыл бұрын
Hi Danielle! That's a great question! Ownership of curriculum varies. When working with other companies, they will specify ownership of the content you create when you sign a contract. Typically, when creating for someone else, they have ownership of the work because they are compensating you for it. If you personally create curriculum and sell it, you can sell it to as many people as want because you own it. When creating your own curriculum, it is important to include copyright and terms of use information with your work so that the people you sell to know that they cannot redistribute your work.
@danielledrogalis26994 жыл бұрын
@@Vestals21stCenturyClassroom Thank you. As I enter into this, I will have to make sure to create clear contractual arrangements. This is great information!

@@danielledrogalis2699 Yes, always make sure to read your contracts carefully before you sign and ask questions about anything you don't understand or that you disagree with. I can't stress that enough. Companies are always looking out for their best interests and it is important that you look out for yourself and your business. I've definitely turned down certain opportunities because I did not agree with the terms laid out in the contracts.

I own my own curriculum company now (Vestal's 21st Century Classroom). As I state in this video, finding jobs is tough in the beginning but it gets easier with time if you are persistent. I have another video on my channel where I talk about how I got started. You can find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX-umYGEaKtoqa8
