12 TIPS on How to Hike the PR1 Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo on Madeira

One of the most special day hikes of the world, the Pico to Pico on the Portugese island of Madeira. Truly unique and beautiful. Start at the third highest mountain of the island and make your way to the highest peak called Pico Ruivo.
Madeira might not me that known to people for other things than being the childhood home of Cristiano Ronaldo, but it is completely worth your visit. Just a short flight away from Lisbon and you feel like you landed on one of the Hawaiian islands.

Fantastic video, planning to do this hike this year! Would you say it would be easy to pick up a taxi at the end and then get it back to the beginning? We plan to drive to the beginning but not walk it in both directions. Ta.

Mmm i doubt that there will be many taxi's. Might be but i dont know. You could be lucky but i wouldnt try it without having some phone numbers of taxi's you could call?

Hi Xander, thanks for the very interesting and helpful video! Question: My girlfriend and I are going to Madeira in June and would very much like to do this hike. However, we both are somewhat afraid of heights :D so we were wondering if it is very scary at some points or does it feel perfectly safe all the time? We have done some hikes with heights so we're not extremely terrified of heights, but this one seems to have some scary points and we do have some hoogtevrees.. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the comment! Its not a scary hike, might be one or two spots but with proper fencing. And you will always have the oppertunity to turn around, the start from Pico de Arieiro is already worth it even without a hike!!

Any thoughts on continuing to Teixeiera for car pickup instead of heading back to Areeiro? A little concerned about the difficulty

@OlaCamino if you're used to walking with poles it can be comfortabele. But the trail is narrow!
