How hard is PR1 hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo on Madeira?

The PR1 hike is often described as one of the most thrilling hikes on Madeira. There are definitely some of the best views on the island during this hike but I wouldn’t call it scary. This is highly subjective of course. Overall the hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo is not the hardest, the return to Pico do Arieiro however was a bit harder because of the high inclination (lots of stairs to climb).
For most of my hikes I use the application Wikiloc which is very useful to find your way and see elevation gain, photos of other hikers, etc.

Just got back from Madeira, such a lovely island, I did the PR1 hike there and back in the morning with a few breaks to eat and take in the views 4.75hrs there and back then did the PR8 Dragons tail hike afterwards down at Ponta de São Lourenço a little easier with great views though.

Great video, falling in love with Madeira. I can walk 6 to 12km, did it in NY for 5 days straight. But hiking seems maybe to much, got a small fear of heights but can really appreciate the views.

I walked back. Views were different so it didn't feel like doing the same trail twice.

It might be challenging on some parts of the hike but if you keep close to the side it should be okay.

Hi, I have acheived this hiking last week. The weather was perfectly sunny and clear. What a beautiful nature and the best of this hiking is once I arrived on the top and the view 360° Pic R. That was my reason to come back in Madeira. So, if you are looking for a bit hard hiking -5000 steps and beautiful montains nature with some animals, do not hesitate to perform this hinking. Cheers!
