So fun! I don’t plan on having a white dress either. My grandmother was married in blue in 1943 because of the old saying “married in blue and you’ll always be true” I’ve always loved that 💕

Tho I did get married in white, I actually wanted a blush pink dress but my mom would not hear if it because in my culture getting married in a different color meant that I was no longer pure(really?!?! Any way I guess in a way what ever I got married in white and wore my vail over my face down the aisle once I got to my husband to be my dad raised the vail gave me kiss on the fire head and "gave me away" So I guess you can say I was being respectful to my parents wishes because in reality I had my own ideas of what I wanted my wedding to be cause if I had the chance I would have wanted a beach side wedding vs a traditional church wedding but it was all worth it at the end cause I did have a reception by the ocean literally.

I was a June bride! I didn't want june but I didn't want to wait anymore haha so i settled. I redesigned my mothers wedding dress and wore it. I walked down the isle to the same song my mom she did (rachmaninoffs Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini), I wore the same color nail polish she had and I tried to recreate a similar photo they did with their hands with the flowers and such! needless to say i love my mom haha

An old saying was, Something Old ,Something New, Something Borrowed, and something blue, and put a dime in your shoe. I was a June bride 34 years ago! My something new, was my wedding dress, I borrowed a handkerchief from my sister and carried it with my bouquet, and my something blue was my garter, and I put a dime in my shoe. It was just for tradition not for good luck for me. I'm so happy for your wedding. Congratulations. I'm excited to watch and see yours being pulled together. Again congratulations and best wishes to you ,may the Lord bless you with a wonderful marriage.💖🙏

I hadn't heard of most of these! How interesting. I wore a veil, but only had it over my face when I walked down the aisle, I think it would have bothered me to wear it through the ceremony. I just liked the way it looked, especially with my 50s style dress. I made my veil and my maid of honor sewed my dress. It was really special☺️

Wore the veil over my face during the wedding and when it was declared "you may now kiss the bride", my husband lifted the veil to kiss me. It was so romantic. Still have my dress and my veil too.

Diamonds in a engagement ring is very new, for about a century. Before it was normal to have rubies or a pearl ring. And the Christian way of wearing the rings is on your right hand. The left hand was the pagan way of the Romans and back in the day they decided that it would be on the right hand so it wasn’t pagan until about 300 years ago when the classical era was revived and someone found that the Romans thought the ring finger on your left hand had a vein that went straight to your heart and that’s why that finger/hand was used. So they started using the left hand again. So we have been following a pagan ritual since then.

Cheeky A I live in Australia and here it’s on the left England is on the left and America too Asian countries are now wearing on the left but I have heard that in places in Europe that they wear on their right still. Where I am it’s the left the right hand is purely for decoration now.

Victoria Grant Oh okay I see. I’m from Canada and I’ve only ever seen countless people wear it on the right hand. However upon talking to my friend in the last few minutes her mother and she wear it on the left. Funny. 😄😄

My understanding of a veil is that it was a purity thing. When the husband pulls back the veil, it is a picture of the husband being the only one to take the wifes purity.

wow how interesting those traditions were . Here is one about the bridesmaid actually the origin of having them in a wedding As far as bridesmaid duty, in early Roman times, bridesmaids would line up to form somewhat of a protective shield while walking the bride to the groom's village. The group of women, who were similarly dressed, were expected to intervene if any vengeful paramours tried to hurt the bride or steal her dowry. I was married June 9th I wanted to have it in early June because it would be cooler. Much to my dismay it was 96 degrees !! I did not know there was such a thing as getting married off season. Thank you for all the vintage tips Have a lovely forth coming week ( Judy )

I planned on walking down the aisle with my veil on and once I reach my groom, he can lift it and then proceed with the ceremony. So I wouldn’t be covered the entire time. But I also really like the look of super thin veils, so my vision and face won’t be blocked at all.

A lot of cultures break dishes at the ceremony or reception. Jewish ceremonies step on the glass. Greek receptions break plates. People used to have individual cups, plates, and silverware for each family member. Breaking the dishes symbolized that you no longer have a place in your parents' home but are starting a new life (with new dishes hopefully!) in your own home.

In my family we do the money dance. The guys dance with the bride and the girls dance with the groom and they give them money to dance with them. The traditional way is to pin the money on the bride and groom, but I’ve also seen it with the money put in the grooms pocket and the bride has a purse.

Going back to the flowers being used as deodorant, the reason we throw the bouquet to the bridesmaids is because it's a symbol of the husband committing to the wife, therefore accepting her natural smell. So the flowers are no longer needed

Irish brides used to all get married in blue because it meant honor, loyalty, and unending love. it also meant purity. The church( Catholic which was the only church before Henry VIII) outlawed the wedding march because it was secular. I carried a poem book that had been in my family for 120 years as did my daughter. My granddaughters might also.

My wedding band has 1 little diamond in it but two colors of gold. My husbands is two colors gold, I did wear a of whit dress, borrowed where my grandma pearl earrings, blue was a little ribbon sawn in my dress. My wedding bouquet was made out of beading pearls and silk flowers. My husband I I made them together as a bonding. Also was my hair peace and his peace on his jacket. For the toast i made it because my husband didn’t feel comfortable talking for many people. Our honeymoon was as the old days in Belgium if you where wealthy a week at the beach. I was glad to put down my bouquet because it was heavy to carry it around from morning till late evening. And luckily I didn’t throw it, as it probably would have knocked someone out. My grandmother and great granny married in a black dress whit a white collar on it. My great granny was marriage civil and in church and than a light meal with parents and back on the fields working and taking care of the farm. My great gran worked also for a baron and his family have given her a beautiful set of table wear. It was uncommon to have a special dinerplates that where to fancy with gold rims. Grandma did had more like a family diner. I think it all depended at how much money you had too. My mother married in a short dress her second wedding was in light green. I didn’t have maids of honor my foster mom was my best one who signed for me. We did have a niece and nephews that would walk before us. We had a wonderful day, it doesn’t matter if it’s big or small but mostly at your own taste. Some say a dime some say a penny in your shoe. That was the only thing I didn’t do, and thinking about it there is always something that is forgotten or lost.

Folks also made monitory gifts not only for the couple but demonstrating to god their support and acceptance of their new status in community . Dads also walked daughters down aisle to Demi demonstrate she is to be a grown woman and put her childhood things away . Some cultures kidnapped bride and grooms demonstrated their commitment by retrieving her or paying random. It was usually the bride family doing the abducting anyway.

Brides maids and wedding party folk were sometimes a security measure I e jealous people or to protect brides “virtue” heard it from Romanian friends . Borrowed undies , well , the closest logic is us ladies line up our cycles so perhaps it’s a hormone thing? Hey folks were desperate for children then. Imagine how they from back then would feel about fertility drug use. Monitoring cycles etc. folks made offerings to saints for fertility so when u want children nothing seems to far a reach . Women wore long hair up and only revealed her coif of glory to her husband, the veil would conceal a bit as well . Then there’s the whole save wedding cake thing . Or jumping the broom . White also accentuated virginity and the ever popular stained sheet reveal following the wedding night . Dad offers daughter to husband to sever ties and demonstrate that she belongs to groom and begin their own lives and household
