12 Volt AC Compressor in a 944 Part 1

MAN! This is what most endurance race car uses now for their AC system, to keep the driver cool. This is really awsome! I'm looking into doing this 12V DC AC compressor for my future track car with engine swaps. RESPECT for your work!

This is the video I've been looking for. I will use a 96v electric AC compressor in my build. I have converted my Suzuki (Kei) minipick up to electric and it runs on 96v, hence, the current draw will not be as much..

@@dr.frahnkensteeen4485 Thank you.. The AC installation is my nxt challenge.. Never made water fitting repair that did not leaked on the 1st install, much more on an A/C fittings.. Hahaha.. Im sure it will be a stiff learning curve for me.

I will least have the basics done this week. Hopefully I can pressure test the system this Saturday. It may be a little harder for the 924S. But sure could sort a way to run it.

Hello. I've been daydreaming about doing something like this for my MR2 for years now. So, was it worth it? What are some lessons learned? How would you do it differently? I was thinking I might need a bigger battery, maybe even a second one like how some trucks are set up. Some 18 wheeler setups I've seen have like four or five batteries in their APU AC setups. I was also thinking I'll need a bigger alternator since my car has one of those old school 80a alternators. That's probably the easy part. If everything goes right, I would have a more balanced car, my car wouldn't shake as much when running the AC, declutter the engine bay [but add to the frunk, sacrifices I'm willing to take], and get past this brain constipation I have with this idea that's been floating around lol I'm gonna head over to your part 2 and watch all your videos now. So far I have had limited time to do anything on this since part 10. Lessons learned, Larger condenser will be going in and possibly changing the hoses to a Low Barrier type. Having a good solid battery is a must, mine is a H6 group. Not really a need for two unless you want to attempt to run this system which out the engine running. I have a 145AMP alternator what actually does really good from a Nssan Quest.

Also thought about the hoses, I was thinking I might do with a solid tubing setup although that might end up cracking some time, but it would eliminate the need for hoses. I'll note your point about the battery. I was not wanting to dual battery since that would be heavy. I feel better about following your footsteps now. Thank you

@@kalui96 You are welcome. Happy to help! Going all solid would be cool, but higher chances of failures, would have to have some flexible areas. Having a good healthy battery is vital to his set up or it will kill the battery is about 2 weeks of sitting. Good call for not wanting the dual battery, it is heavy and can raise your over all cost a lot more. Anything else i can help with please let me know. I hope this Sunday I can do some more work on this and actually go for a test drive. Very happy that this has helped you.

What about the voltage? It was a guy putting one in an old Chevrolet truck and he said it pulled allot and recommended using an second battery and upgraded alternator.

im doing the same thing with my car now (turbo charged delsol). This kit really came with nothing for instuctions. Do you happen to have a diagram or maybe make a video on the wiring on the controller?

I will be doing a video on all the wiring much as possible. I have talked about the wiring in my others videos at bit. My kit was super basic for instruction, I used the picture layout from the ebay purchase.

Glad you like it. I appreciate that a lot, it has been quite the project. I am in testing phase right now and figured some things our already. I am using a universal condenser. 12x16, It might be too small, But need to keep testing. I purchased the unit, Hoses, Fittings and condenser all separate. If this does turn out to be a good unit I will make a video on all the parts required.

Can I use only the compressor with the car original condenser and dryer , I mean without buying it’s own condenser and dryer?

You should be able to. Long as you can match up your factory lines to the compressor. I went with everything new since a lot of my AC stuff was from 1985.

This is pretty exciting. Do you know if this compressor has its own controller with variable speed control? Been curious how these work. Or does the compressor cycle itself on/off/on off?

Thank you. It does have its own control board and a 2 speed set up at 1500rpm and right around 3krpm at peak. It will use pressure valve for high to control if it shuts off or not.

These kits are really cool , I put one on a 1994 Chevy truck we mounted on a 1975 Chevy K30 chassis with a carbureted SBC . It was just easier to do and works very well. Comes in a complete kit .

The problem is the compressor needs 60 amps, which is a lot You will need a large battery and a dynamo of more than 100 amps I bought a compressor like this, and the problem is that it works with 60 amps, so it pulls all the power from the battery and stops the compressor.

I have been researching a few options like commercial grade batteries. also I have increase the Alternator from 110amper to a 145amper. That actually helped a lot. Ran into some other issues that I need to address before I can release Part 6.

get 12V 100AH or more lifepo4 battery, hook a charge controller to your alternator, set the amps according to the alternator power rating. get a battery LVD so when the battery is low, the compressor is off. keep the ac low to prevent depleting the battery.

Just the compressor with a few fittings was VIA ebay. I had to make everything else, Lines, brackets, support units, electrical connections and get an AC condenser.

Just sitting in one spot it does, also I deemed the condenser I installed too small, so it has been upgraded. I have not been able to go for a drive to see if it hits the lower pressures needed to shut off

It is set up for a 12V system. Has its own power board that controls is. So to answer the question, No Inverter, Just hooked to Battery with least 120 reserve and 950CCA

The alternator would be the one that powers that compressor, most of the time people will need to upgrade to a higher amp alternator

No I think this one's the one that usually trucks use em. They have like a motor thingy that turns the compressor piston and swash plates acting like a alternator in this case. If I'm not mistaken
