I'm betting most of you know a multitude of ways to use Reed's "Biblical" book Syncopation for the Modern Drummer for drum set study. I'm going to share my 12 favorites ways (so far) in a jazz context, with a few even 1/8th note ideas as well. There are 3 parts, with 4 sections in each part. Part 1 focuses on independence/interdependent exercises using the snare, toms and bass drum.
Section 1 - Basic Jazz Groove - Read the written line on the snare and/or toms
Section 2 Basic Jazz Groove - Read the written line with your bass drum
Section 3 - Basic Jazz Groove - Read the written line with 1/8s on the BD and 1/4s on the snare
Section 3A - Basic Jazz Groove - Read the written line with 1/8s on the snare and 1/4s on the BD
Section 4 - Basic Bossa Nova Groove - Read the written line with a SD click pattern, on the SD or toms
I especially like to use pages 38 - 45 - Full page exercises 1 - 8. Pages 33 - 37 (Syncopation Sets) serve as a good primer; as do pages 30-32. Note: page #s may vary based on your edition.

I met Ted Reed at a Chicago NAMM show in 1990. I showed him some applications of his book I had developed. It blew his mind. He had only used his book literally. The great thing about drumming is that the variations are infinite

Nice video. Takes me back to Berklee in the 80s where everyone was doing this. We called it the Bible, too! I think it may have been Alan Dawson who started using the book in this way. Another book that you can do this with, if you can find it, is the now long out of print Jake Hanna book. The phrases swing a little better than Ted Reed, which makes them more usable, and the material is a bit more diverse (different meters and mixed note values in each study).

I saw you play and heard you play. What a fantastic drummer you are. The late great Stanley Kaye thought the world of you. A fine gentlemen Stanley was a kind man. I know he knew Buddy Rich so so so much. Sherrie could you possibly write out a Buddy Rich exercise for me? I want to have an exercise written out slowly with sticking and then let me gradually build up some speed. Thank you so much for everything you have done for drumming. A fan of yours always BOOM

Alright, this randomly popped up in my recommended videos, and you've inspired me to pull out this book for the first time in nearly a year. I always just snare comped to it over a swing pattern tbh, thinking the other ideas sounded a bit silly. Hearing you play them, now I know better! I especially liked the bossa nova/samba grooves, they're going to take me a while to learn but I think they'll be worth it.

Great...your providing a very valuable lesson in how to use Ted Reid's book. One day my instructor played around the kit from the book to demonstrate to me how the patterns can be played in any way you like around the kit....he basically said that. I think your instruction is very complete. I'd look forward to following along, I can see it'll take some thought, but you break it down thoroughly enough. Thanks

Hi Sherrie! I dig the different ideas and positive energy too. I never thought of playing Reed book w/ Latin or funk flavor-it’s so standard to play it with swing feel that I sort of bypassed the possibility-giving me great ideas-I’m back on the Reed book for daily practice and would actually like to write a sort of updated Reed-type reading book although this is definitely one of the bibles (no capital “B”…don’t want to upset anyone these days, hee hee….). Peace and love, hope to see you again sometime, GREG BURROWS

This drum book needs to be reprinted in modern large bold notations instead of 38 year old hand written markings that are hard to read. Music software makes it easy.
