To me it looks like Tahj was the actual main maniac. It doesn't really make sense for Rob to decide to bring the kid with them as a witness if he knew what they would be doing. As for the kid, I think he really should've received a lighter sentence given the position he found himself in. A 12 year old in that situation could be terrified out of their mind, most adults would be.
