Wesley W, there is no marks because what you see is the marks. Like two grade stakes, one in front of you and one to the left, once you line them up (looking through prism) you have a 90. Make sense?

@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans so if you wanted to run a perpendicular line 90 degrees off of that woodpile if you sight down the left side of the woodpile like you did and you had somebody with a stake by your truck move it until it lined up from middle screen to bottom screen with the left side of the pile is that correct?

I had one when I was 15. Now 73, remembered it, looked on Ebay, and confirmed it still exists. Searched KZbin for proper uses, and here we are. It was a great tool then, and now! Thanks.

Yes, I bought one 35 years ago when I built my first house and used it to layout the footers! Now I'm laying strings out for a garage footer. Took me a couple hours to find it... Works great! Oh, and be sure to use a plumb bob to get accurate readings.

I've had one of those since 1968 when I started working as a surveyor. The notch in the bottom is for a plumb bob to get your 90 degrees off an exact point.

New to the channel, enjoy it very much and learning some valuable things as well. Thanks for that! And one of the first videos I see has a question I could answer.... I used a right angle prism for 30 plus years as a field agronomist. I used it for laying out and squaring up research plots when they were going to be planted in irregular shaped fields. Now, with GPS enabled planting and harvesting equipment and all other location & monitoring technologies, it has kind of made the prism a bit less useful, but I still use on other projects.... My Dad was a farmer and part time carpenter while I was growing up in the 50's. He had one of those and used it to square up barns and other buildings he was building. He also used it to shoot fence lines, whether a straight line or 90 degree angle.

My dad is a 94 year old retired building conttactor. I was going through his old transit and surveying gear and found a version of one of these an a small leather pouch. For a little while i wondered what it was until I took it outside and played with it. All his stuff dates back from the 1950s or 1960s so is 100% optics. Thanks fir the discussion of the instrument. It confirms my experimentation.

I have a right angle prism and a double right angle prism. The right angle prism was made in the 1950s. Its good for finding 90° and for perpendicular offsets. The double right angle prism is the modern version that is popular. With it you can do the same as above and you can also get on line between to distant points. You can't do that without the aid of a double right angle prism or an aiming device. Very handy for setting fence posts between corner posts without having to stretch a line. We surveyors use them for marking property lines and such.

I remember playing with a prism in grade school but this is the first time I've seen one like this and understood the use. You mentioned that it's used on larger projects but can it be used on the smaller ones as well?

That's neat. First time I have seen or heard of them. The only rare tool I have. Is a persuader. If you hit things with it hard enough, sometimes what you hit will cooperate lol.

That tool works kinda like a cross-staff which I like even better. The Cross-staff is easy to make and easy to use. Some are made from a block of wood with two perpendicular saw groves in the top. This lets you square off a corner of land very easy. Before the transit was made back in the early days of Surveying the guys needed a way to square Acres of land. Anyway I made my own but would love to buy one that is factory made with the staff mount like yours has at the bottom. They are easy to use and good for many projects. A word about yours I did not notice any vertical lines that show the exact square that I prefer but it was pretty good. If you had one for sale made of plastic or aluminum with the perpendicular groves I would buy it in a minute.

I worked building the Seabrook Nuke Plant in the late seventies/early eighties (there was some serious blasting done there). The surveyor teams used them on everything that was big, long, and intersected to a right angle. I could be wrong, but I think they also would shoot a laser into the prism to get right angle laser shots. I've seen them used on other large construction projects malls, parking garages,hospitals, school/universities, etc.

Yes I could see through it just fine. My dad was a carpenter and he had one along with numerous other tools, he would say ( you can tell how good of a craftsman was by three things, the tools they had, how used they were, how good of condition the craftsman kept them. )

I've had one on my measure/level/siting shelf for many years from Leitz....and the telescoping mono-pole. I don't use it for precision...however with laying a few excavation corners for clearing & scrubbing. It makes that chore pretty easy. I have used it many times for setting off side yard lines by scoping corners front to back...setting out a few intermediate stakes and then setting the Leitz up over each intermediate stake to shoot a 90° towards the lot's center. With someone holding the tape that's attached to an intermediate stake....just pull the set back, side or rear lines with the tape measure; once centered on a forward siting towards the next stake. It gives you your right angle to be exact on measuring the offset. It's a good tool with the least amount of jeopardy to hauling transits, tripods and siting rods.

What you have is also called a surveyor's cross. The ones in brass can be quite pricy. For well under $100 these newer ones are accurate to 3 minutes. Will look for one soon for rough use. Best if it is level to begin for best accuracy.

Hi. I'm not able to accurately use this gadget on site. Yes I can locate right angles but i can't really tell if the ranging rods are dead on for accuracy. I wish it had vertical hair line to help obtain exact points.

I tend to be a sort of inventive type of mind, so when you were demonstrating this tool with the 90° prisms, I saw in my minds eye, an adaptation of the technology into a rifle scope, to eliminate the otherwise tunnel vision you get from that telescopic lense, similar to the rearview mirror of your car, you would have the ability to catch movement to the sides while focusing on the center site, allowing you to see almost 180° around you to increase situational awareness. This would not only be a great safety measure, but something terrific to have in both military and law-enforcement operations. If this technology already exists, I’m not yet aware of it.

Nice gadget, never seen one of them. How can it be accurate though if there's no cross hairs in the prisms to align or find the proposed 90° line. Probably best to use a 3,4 5 rule with a laser rule for accuracy. Can you do a review and show how accurate that prism is ?

I honestly can't say whether I have or have not seen one before, as I've seen so many different niche and custom tools (mostly due to family members working in different trades) that I've rediscovered ones I've forgotten I'd known about previously. However, now that I've seen this I want one (even though I haven't a clue when I'd use it). In the interest of sharing odd/nice tools: a pallet buster is one that is very useful for completely breaking down pallets (into firewood for example) as it's far easier and faster than using a regular crowbar. Likewise wire stretchers were added to my "to-get" list for fixing barb wire fences repair as soon as I learned such a tool existed.

Licensed blaster, my brother in law’s are blaster, majority of there blasting is in blue stone quarries deposit ny and into Pennsylvania. They have in the past blasted for gas lines or pads I believe. Anyhow good video.

Not sure about in your feeders but make friends with beer makers and take their spent grain. It's great animal feed and compost. I don't think it's as shelf stable as the corn you're buying but it would be free and befriending a beer maker could get you free beer also.
