Hi Mike, love your channel. I might be able to help you with your remembering name problem. You know you never forget a face. When you meet someone for the first time ,what you do is think of someone you know that has the same name. Try to say goodbye use their name and think of the person you know with the same name. The next time you see them you will think I know them that's right same name as your friend. It has worked for ever for me.👍🏻✌🏻

My dad and I use a 35 ton County Line splitter (bought from Tractor Supply about 4 years ago). We do some big, UGLY, knotted pieces and every now and then we get one that slows down the wedge, but it splits everything we can throw at it! Having the hinge to set it upright makes life so much easier as we don't have any tractor or lifting setup. The engine starts first pull every time no matter how long it was sitting! We have never even run the engine over half throttle, as we just like to save the wear and tear. Thanks for all your wisdom, Mike!

Hi, Thanks for the great videos. I started cutting firewood in 1978. I became a Husqvarna dealer for 8 1/2 years. I went to the lumberman's festival in Cherry Springs, PA, where I saw the Super Split. I became a dealer for them too and bought the biggest model that they sold at the time. Both my 80cc and 40cc Husqvarna chain saws and my Super Split have been producing 4-6 chords a year to heat our home, using a Fisher air starvation wood stove. I solved the problem of loading large logs onto the nest by welding up a crane attachment for my New Holland LS160 skid steer loader. My wife operates the loader and I do the splitting. I have only two problems with the Super Split. 1) Friends and family get mad at me when I won't let them operate my splitter. The reason is that, like you said, it's wicket fast...2 second cycle time. 2) I don't like the engine noise. So, because I do my splitting at my garage and have access to AC power, I converted my Super Split to electric power. Nice and quiet. Bottom line, I couldn't be happier with either the saws or the splitter after forty years of trouble free use. In fact, we were using it today. I think you'll love the Super Split! ;-)

Great video Mike, as you know with the other comments I posted I love cutting and splitting firewood. I have a speeco 25 ton with a Honda 8.0. I got this splitter from a guy going through a bad divorce for $250 his price not what I offered 6 years ago and it has been great. If anyone knows someone going through a divorce check and see what they have for sale. They will sell it cheap to keep the wife and boyfriend from getting it.

For the people out there asking about PTO splitters...I own a towable 30ton log splitter, I can get into areas on my 100acre ranch with my ATV and splitter in tow that a tractor cannot. But a PTO splitter has no engine to fail/maintain. Pros and cons with each option. If buying a towable splitter be sure spend the cash & go high end on the quality. Honda's small engines seem to be reliable and can handle commercial type abuse. I'm hoping this towable unit I have now will last me until I can purchase or build my own firewood processor. And even with those processors you end up with some pretty large chunks of wood that need to be split down further. Great channel! Too bad we aren't neighbours I think we'd get along just fine! Cheers from Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada!
@bwillan7 жыл бұрын
Your PTO splitter, most certainly has an engine to fail and maintain. It's the one in your tractor. ;)
@ruthless46457 жыл бұрын
If your tractor engine/PTO fails you are out both a tractor AND a splitter, plus your tractor may cost a lot more to repair (from constant running) than just a single splitter...
@DanKlein_15 жыл бұрын
I don't have a pto splitter but I do have one that runs off the rear hydraulics of my tractor. The only drawback that I read about that I never considered when purchasing a tractor powered splitter is it adds hours to your tractors run time meter. it could affect the resale value of your tractor even though it is all just idle time and not a burden on the tractor.

I'm getting into firewood bundles and bought a Generac 10 ton electric kinetic splitter and all the research Ive done, everyone seems to love it and does very well even with 14" rounds. I bought that to split dried, smaller pieces for the bundles. With a 1.5 second cycle time I need to be more productive. I'm also buying the Tractor Supply Countyline 25 ton gas splitter only because I've come into pretty much endless free wood but there's going to be a lot of bigger rounds.

From building a shooting table, to Jeeps (I have an 86 CJ7 stock Jeep), to clearing trails, to weedeater guides (I bought the exact one you recommend), to cutting down trees, tractor buying advice, clearing land, hunting (nothing for me yet this season), firewood, and now I just got home from looking at splitters (didn't buy one yet)...and boom you have a guide on splitters! Creepy! Anyways, great vid as usual, keep em coming. Oh, what ever happened to the chicken coop build? I started building a coop a few weeks before your vid where you built the foundation, but I never saw any other vids. -Jeff

You know it, Steve! It is an amazing feeling! I was looking for property to purchase in an area that I thought I might find the right property for me. I saw a little church in a VERY small community by the only store in town and made a point to go to that church one Sunday. Great church and people there. To make a log story longer... There was an announcement that there was a lady and her two children that just covertly moved there from another state to escape a very abusive husband - he actually attempted to kill her.( The church had a retired police officer in the congregation that moved from a large city near her location and he checked on her story - proved to be true). The announcement was asking for volunteers to meet up in a few weeks to cut, split and haul wood to her new location, because it was in the fall of the year and she had no firewood, or the money to pay for firewood. (This was in a very cold climate and her only heat source was a wood stove in a worn out, drafty old trailer - poor lady had little money). I told them I would volunteer. It turned out I found a property about two hours North. and it happened to be where I was temporarily staying, but I said I would show up, so I did. It was amazing - almost everybody from that little church, (small church, but a big percentage of them showed up) was there and all working, cutting, splitting and even the kids were helping to load the firewood. Several truck and trailer loads where delivered to that lady and her two kids - one junior high age and the other high school age. The mom and kids were so grateful, gracious and the kids so well mannered and they even help stack all the wood we brought in a little barn on the property. God bless.

Hey Mike, I bought my BX from Messicks - IMO, they are a good dealer. I have nothing bad to say about their service. I own the DR RapidFire Kinetic wood splitter K34 Pro-XL Model - $2600 if I recall. I think that included freight to a shipping/trucking terminal. The reason I bought the kinetic splitter was speed. They are fast, and cut the time on the splitter dramatically. When I split oak, it works great. But, anything with knots or tight grain not so good, even ash is a challenge when you get into any twisted grain. Forget about crotch wood. Not sure if it is the mechanical action of the rapidfire or if it is inherent with all kinetic splitters. So, I have a hydraulic splitter for big rounds and tough splitting firewood. Big rounds I break down to quarters and then finish to size with the kinetic splitter. Like you, I cut my rounds to 16 inches to dry and burn. I actually sold my hydraulic splitter after I purchased the rapidfire. But, after I nearly ripped my arm off with the tough to split wood I was able to buy it back. So, if you buy one, keep the hydraulic around to see how it works for you.

We season it for a year, and it burns fine. IMO, it gets a bad rap because it's such a bitch to split. Once split and dried I've always had good results burning it.

I bought a used homemade unit on Craigslist for $300. I'm building a log lift for it and put a new Harbor Freight motor on it. Honestly the larger foot print is the only possible downfall compared to yours. It's base is the rear end of a front wheel drive car. So it can be pulled down the highway. So depending what level of work you're willing to do you can do it cheap! Like you say it all depends on your needs.

Interested to see what your thoughts are on PTO splitters. One thought on it is one less engine to take care of.
@DaveClough17 жыл бұрын
Philip Irwin I agree about not wanting another engine to maintain
@NyFvR7 жыл бұрын
Typically your tractor uses more fuel, ties up the tractor for the splitter, if you're using the tractor hydraulics its slow and weak for the average home owner tractor series, and overall maintenance is more on the tractor. But one less engine to maintain, adjustable work height if on the 3pt, less storage space. Ill mention hours on the tractor, but I don't own one to not use, so I could care less about the hours but some people do and maintenance is driven by hours. So there is no right answer if that helps, its all in what you want to maintain.

I had a hydraulic splitter, even with a four way wedge it was just too slow and noisy for me. I bought a super split and love it. I bought mine with a gas engine and switched to electric, 220v 2hp. The splitter goes through everything, even elm but with difficulties. On elm I suspect it would be as slow as a hydraulic, luckily I don't have much elm or I would not burn wood. I do have a eko 40 wood gasification boiler and it can take much larger rounds than the wood stoves (progress hybrid and fire view) so the elm gets reduced to through the door size only. The super split has its problems the two worst are no vertical option which is largely negated because I have a fel to lift logs to working height. The other is no power return for the push plate. Sometimes it gets stuck in a log and you have to beat the log off the wedge to get the push plate free, that happens about once per cord. All things considered I love my super split and would rather give up burning wood before going back to using a hydraulic. Operating it, especially when on the electric motor is a pleasure.

@brianjonker5107 жыл бұрын
There are levers that automatically retract the cylinder when you let go of it. Sorry dont know the name. The other thing you can do is paint a line at 12 and a half inchees so you dont go back farther than needed. A cross wedge would give you four pieces each stroke. Alternatively some pieces you split could double stack. There are several techniques to manage faster splitting.

I noticed that you stacked the wood 'Bark down" (except the ends). That's how I do it. I think it aids in the evaporation of the moisture. Others have told me that 'bark up' is the only way to go. What do you think?

Economics on a pto splitter don't work. Obviously it would depend on the tractor but think about the replacement cost of, in this case a kubota 3901 engine. The engine alone has to be worth at least $5k. Racking up hours, like Mike says, makes no sense when a ~$1000 machine can do the job.

Why wouldn't you use a 3 Point hitch Splitter? That way you use the hydraulics on you Kubota. One less engine to maintain.

I like using the carry all on the tractor to toss splits into, Also I don't like putting lots of hours on my tractor doing what a 6.5hp Briggs can do

3pt hitch splitter is the way to go if you don't plan on traveling away from your homestead. This means you no longer have to physically move the splitter around between storage & splitting locations because it's attached to your tractor like any other implement would be, and secondly you no longer have another small engine to deal with every year as far as upkeep, maintenance & starting issues in cold weather. I've had both types & when the engine died on my last one I decided to make the switch & couldn't be happier. Also, if you are concerned with speeding up the splitting process, then another must have is a two-sided or sometimes called a "dual" wedge...this allows you to split a log in both directions, whereas normally the "backstroke" is simply wasted time watching the wedge return to its starting position. Oh and last but certainly not least is having a log table or sometimes called log "cradles" on some models. These hang off both sides & catch the 2 halves of the log you've just split....instead of them falling to the ground (or worse yet on your toes!) while trying to catch them. It eliminates the bending over & picking up of a log you've already handled once...why bend over & pick it up again from the ground? I can't live without the cradles & dual wedge now, they really are game changers. I bought mine from Northern Tool (Powerhouse brand) about ten or so years ago. Hopefully it's still available, as I've never had any problems with it whatsoever. Anyway sorry for the length of this! Just my two cents & everybody is different. Hope it helps someone in their next purchase. Great video as always, have a great day!!

I prefer not to put the hours(from log splitting) on my tractor. Either way, you have to get the splitter on the tractor or towed to the site.

CP Topher's Yeah, in the end I guess it's six of one & half a dozen of the other. But from here on out in life, if I can use a power source I already own to get the job done I'm gonna do it. Maintaining almost a dozen engines currently, that's plenty of tinkering to keep me busy!

Another great one Mike - here’s a link to the splitter we use that’s popular here in Aus - Sorta semi-HD but works great for us and the heavy hardwood Eucalypts: www.superaxe.com.au/aussie-chopper-ws3150/

Outdoors With The Morgans not sure if there’s a US distributor, it’s a great machine! I like single-blade head-stocks as it’s a bit easier in hardwood. Thinking we will get the elevator conveyor next season.

I have a splitter from wolfe ridge manufacturing in Euclaire Wisconsin. It is a beast - goes through anything. Built like a tank. wolferidgemfg.com - check them out. A bit more money but should last a lifetime. Another great video. Thanks!
