120 film Photoshoot [testing the solida III folding camera | Part 3]

In this third part of the series about the Franka Solida III 120 film folding camera, we are finally going out and do some 120 film photoshoot test images to see how this old folding medium format camera performs.
What I can say up front is, you want to own an external range finder if you plan on serious shootings with this kind of film camera.

Man, I do love my folding cameras, I find that many people always say "oh why do you use that piece of junk", or "That camera cant make a nice image", stuff like that. However, if you take your time, and actually try, you can get some seriously outstanding images from some of these old folders. In fact, some of my favorite images ever were taken on an old folding camera! Love some of the shots, but I totally agree that if you want to overall improve image quality you'll want to invest in an external rangefinder. I use a Prazisa one, and it is excellent. Super small, pretty accurate, and can be adjusted if need be, with a coin or flat tip screwdriver. Also super easy to take apart and clean. Cant wait to see more videos!

Nice take on the old Franka. I'm after one, just to try and compare it with a Voigtlander Perkeo as they both weight more or less the same ;) Out of curiosity, what is the white rectangle box the cat has?

Heyy, yah it was very nice to play with the franka solida iii . I aniway gave it away in exchange for two rolls of film 😅. Since i do not own an external range finder it was pointless for me to keep the cam. To answer your question, the white box is a GPS tracker just in case she gets lost. But usually she stays close to me and even if she is going away a bit further, usually, she always comes back by herself. But safety first.

The dumbest thing on this is the focusing. 100% I'd be ready to take a shot so I meter, cock the shutter, advance the film, do all of the other settings but then forget to focus.. Because I look trough the viewing window and my brain is like : check that's in focus. When it's not even a reflex camera..

yah, but you could use an external rangefinder such as the „TELEX“ or Watameter or the BLIK from Lomo (the 1990s ones but be careful with that things, there are a lot of problematic units on the market). There should also be one from Voigtländer and many other companies. Such a thing will make your life a lot easier. Well… atleast if the rangefinder is correctly calibrated 😅😂. There accuracy strongly depends on if they are calibrated for closeup- or far distances. There are also ones from Kodak that offer close up kits. But i can not tell you if they are any good, since i never used the kodak ones. I have a Telex and calibrated it myself for closer distances. But to be honest, i have no more zone focusing camera in my arsenal. I got rid of them. Greetings.
