The Kelly Hotel was still standing when I was a little kid, mid-50s. I got to go inside once, no memory of who I would have gone in with or why we were there. It had been empty many years by then. And, the gas station was still up in the early 70's. There was a street fair once (again mid-50's) and both sides of the street still had buildings.---I'm happy to watch you dig in the old town. My Grandparents' homes, as well as those of other relatives, are still standing. Some are even occupied!

oh yeah? maybe we will dig one some day.. we actually met a bunch of people in that town, and we still even talk to a few of them. havent been back there in a year but, id really like to go back there. i think we have most of our videos so far from dazey. we did dig one house there. supposidly it was the first house built in the town and its still occupied and standing. somewhere in our videos you should be able to come across it! it was a really good place to dig, unfortunatly we didnt record very much of it, so we were only able to cut a video that was under 10 minutes

Tom and Jake, Splendid video!!! The glass pen is absolutely beautiful. I wish we could have seen it all cleaned up. I loved all of the bitters bottles. I wish they were in my collection. Who is the bottle collector or are you both? Was there any fresh water in the area during the time when the hotel was up and running? Jake when you start digging again would you please save me some seeds from the dig, I would like to try to grow them? Thank you for the knowledge. Jake I'm glad your name can be seen so you get credit also. Take care and be safe.✌

Some of those drug store bottles, especially from the 1800s, were for laudnum - a mix of whiskey and opium - which was the only painkiller stronger than the aspirin available from 1815 forward. Local archaeologists find lots of laudnum bottles in privey pits. As you can imagine, that stuff was addictive as hell.
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
haha yeah i can imagine! hmm. i had never heard that before.. i always assumed that it was either cocaine, opiates, or alcohol but i guess i never knew that they had a specific name for it.. sometimes we dig them out and there is a yellow or white residue in them.. ive never like tried it lol.. but i always wonder if id get in trouble if i got pulled over on the way home ands the cops did a test on it..

Thanks again for some great content! If you have time I do have a a couple questions. Also with the understanding that I have never dug a privy or a trash dump. Are the privies not deep enough to worry about a temperature difference to crack the bottles if taken out to quickly? What depth does that occur? I imagine it may be a bit different from region to region. Thank you for you time.
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
yes the bottles can break if the temperature changes too quickly.. i believe its more dangerous to the bottle to have them at room temp, and then get them cold quickly.. but yeah they could potentially break if they change temp too fast, but the ground and the air temp was probably only about a 20 degree Fahrenheit diggerence, it was a fairly cool day for mid summer, and the ground that low was was cool, but not cold. but absolutely they can break if you are not careful.. if its super hot out, we will leave the water inside them, to prevent any quick temp change.. but its my understanding that the ground wont freeze too far down.. probably 5 feet down at the height of winter. this was in NE north dakota, where its one of the coldest places in the continental US, but by the time it gets to summer, the ground is cool, but never cold.. and i honestly have never dug after the ground has frozen, so i have no idea what its like below the ground, but i do know that after the snow melts (usually in april) the ground below the surface thaws out fairly quickly.. but yeah i imagine that the bottles towards the top wont survive forever with such harsh freeze/thaw cycles... its almost universal that the bottles towards the top are likely to get broken/cracked as compared to the bottles towards the bottom, which are usually in way better condition.. i hope that helped, and if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask again! thanks for watching
@lukependleton25892 жыл бұрын
Yes. Thank you for the response. Hopefully one day I'll find some privies to dig here in Kansas so the more information I can gather the better. Thank you again

I really enjoy these; it makes me want to just go in my backyard and dig, haha. I can tell by your maps that you plan these , just remember 1 cubic sq of dirt is about 80 lbs, you dig pretty deep muchacho, I hope you look into some type of shoring so you decreases your chance of getting hurt
@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
yeah the dirt up here is pretty solid but.. yeah when we get down past like 8 feet, then yeah we take precautions. but we've gone south or have seen some sandy areas around here, and they just didnt seem to dig them as deep when the soil was likely to just collapse.. but thank you, glad you enjoy the videos, and thanks for leaving us a comment

@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
lol no... im not even sure if its even whiskey in those, or just ground water.. some of the bottles we have found with a cork in them, we've unsealed and it was the worst smelling thing you can image.. and theres also alot of deadly stuff if potentially ingested, in these pits ie. poison, lead paint, bacteria, mercury, heroin, opium, etc.. but we have joked about trying it.. none of us ever have tho

Before removing the sod you should metal detect it because there could be some old coins there. I never got into privy digging because I'm too spoiled. I dig big town dumps that are just loaded with stuff and I find a lot of things a lot quicker.

hahah yeah ive dug a few dumps.. they're pretty awesome to dig. just the most random stuff. yeah we have a metal detector but we should probably use a little more.. some of these pits just have so much rust in them that they set off the detector pretty much nonstop

@BelowthePlains2 жыл бұрын
yeah those are really cool.. i have a theory.. they are sqaure right? so the reason they always seem to be broken is bc a circle is a stronger shape that a square.. and those large flat panels only need a little tap by something hard and theyre gonna break.. yeah those electric bitters are so cool. not worth much but.. thats just a cool sounding name! thanks for commenting
Why did people back then throw glass and other things in the outhouses?
