1200 carat Thick Black Opal

This is a story about a 7.7 oz black opal chunk from Coober Pedy, South Australia. I cut and polish this stone and make cabochons and an arrowhead. Also, o 68 carat brilliantly colored piece of Ethiopian rough opal is examined, cut, drilled and made into a beautiful gem -- for GIVEAWAY, along with 3 polished pieces of black opal.

I gotta say, before i started watching your channel i knew nothing about opal. Soon after starting buying little roughs here and there trying to sand out my own. In the process my 13 year old daughter took on this passion too and now has opal, gems, crystals, you name it and she probably has it or knows of it. The only thing she doesn’t have is a nice black opal due to price but she would just go crazy if she won one. Love your channel and my cats cuter! Lmao

When I was a kid, and dinosaurs roamed the earth, my family and I used to do a lot of rockhounding in eastern Montana. Once, we came upon an area of teepee rings near the Yellowstone River. There were lots of chips from flintknapping, and I still have a lot of those chips today. There was even one arrowhead that was started and unfinished, and I have that too. I love watching you do the same process those native people did so long ago. Thanks for the great video.

I once had a dream, where people's name were expressed with opals. So if you want to introduce yourself to someone, you just give them "your" opal. It totally made sense to me, since opals are more unique, like our personalities and there are no two same opal patterns. Better then regular names, like John or Sheela

Always love the videos and as for an interesting comment. 4 years ago I was cycling home late in the evening and was hit by a drunk driver, in a state of shock I must have walked home cause I came too in my apartment wet, face damaged and confused and started to feel pain. My right shoulder was broken, right ribs all cracked and no idea how I got there. I called my friend and got him to take me to the hospital. A few days later I had someone drive me the route I would normally bike home as I was trying to see if there was cameras for info on the accident, in this back road intersection was my jacket, obvious signs on the accident and my opal ring that was missing, it had flown off my hand and cracked the opal. Miraculously it was in the road and never run over or stolen. If I could post picture here I would but could send you one. The ring was bent back into shape and it’s a reminder I’m alive and I’m grateful. Still beautiful even with a chunk missing

I have done some spear points but mainly make arrowhead points. I have fallen in love with opal,for many years I only worked natural hard to find turquoise.Just about all of it today is stabilized and or dyed also. I been watching your videos for a long time but finally purchased my first couple pieces of Opal on Etsy. I cleaned them off with water when I got them because there was some dirt on them and they became clear. Did I damage or ruin my Opal and if this is a normal thing why can some opals get wet and others turn clear if you get them wet!?!

I thank Riley first, and then dig out my pixie and fancy Dremel press with all those attachments and spend countless hours texting a buddy name Don that’s a world famous Opal cutter for his advice. Wait on back ordered Delivers of those special tools (dop sticks, wax) and that serum dioxide compound stuff, they did not mention in books back in 2005, or at least the books I read. Opal cutting for Dummies. The stone I ended up with I call it “Blinky”. Then I get advise from the Guy that made the Famous Rainbow shield and a second rainbow shield on how to design it with diamonds for a beautiful Pendant I could wear to the Pot luck dinner.

Opal is my Birthstone, had a ring and matching necklace once but my Bestest Friend wanted this baby Goffin bird. So I traded my jewls, she just died a week ago but the bird, Sammie Diane went to a bird sanctuary. She had her for 34 yrs. I stumbled on your channel this morning ad I relentlessly drug myself out of bed. Amazing beautiful work sir! I'm an October baby so Opal is my stone. As a child I watched my mother and Grandfather look for Arrowheads and minerals and sorts, always wondered why my mom would "lick" her rocks. Well I now know why because I turned into a rock licker! I love what you do with those opals. My wife and I don't like shiny expensive things cause it doesn't fit with our life style. Althougt, opals don't enter the category like gold or diamonds. Its unique texture makes it less flashy and more like my wife, a beautiful gem in a natural look body. It doesn't need to be encased in some extravagent set to reveal its value. I spent 14 months in Woomera South Australia close to Andamooka and south of Coobejrpeedy. Fell in love with opals there. There are Opal veins very close to Woomera but the government refused to let us explore for them. I bought some from local miners and brought them home. I regret not buying many more!

I live in Colorado and if I had known some of the things I have been seeing on youtube, man I would not be sitting here right now. When I first came across opal on youtube I want to goodle, research, call who ever I had to so cut and polish some. I looked on the internet to see if there was any place here in colorado that i could go mine for opal, No then I look thinking in New Mexico I foun a few places and some in Nevada. So it turn out that my husband does not like things that I like to do so one of these days maybe I will be able to find or mine for an opal. That big 1200 carat opal was amazing! You could stick that in a sock and use it to rob a bank. “Get the money in the bag! Everybody stay calm or you’ll be getting the opal and i dont mean as jewlery” you could use it to work out too by using it as a weight. You could use it to choke a donkey. Or you could use it to prop open one of those big heavy duty doors. I bet theres loads of things you could do with that mini mountain of opal. Thanks to watching your channel with me my 11 year old daughter has fallen in love with opal. All the different colours that change and shimmer when looked at from a different angle mesmerise her. She’s going into surgery to get corrective surgery on her spine the poor wee thing. I think I’m going to get her a bit of opal as a good luck charm .

I have to get my hands on some Australian black opal. I am blown away by the look in all the youtube videos and social media pages. I bought some Ethiopian opal since it was cheaper and although it is gorgeous like the one you cut in this video, it is more like an aquarium ful of sparkles. I kind of like the idea that Australian black opal has a color bar with concentrated color, less of an aquarium, and more of a shmear of color. Nice work!

A stunning stone and such exquisite workmanship. If I was in your line of work I'd be a nervous wreck every day! Some people say that we were created by the universe, are the universe, and are here to observe, experience the universe/our self/selves. And opals are one of the best forms, amongst many, that it/we/I have to entertain ourselves/itself. It's amazing what comes out of the earth. In this day and age, it’s rare to see someone with your Knapping skills. I thought I was pretty good, but you actually rival my uncle’s level of mastery. And that’s the highest level of praise I can give, from my own experience. He taught me and my siblings and my cousins how to hunt, fish, gather herbs and edible plants, and a half dozen ways to make fire and preserve food. He was, in short, the most knowledgeable survivalist I’ve ever known. Not even my jungle expert, and wilderness survival instructors, during my Army career, could give me a better understanding of survival (and they were amazingly smart and pragmatic). I love your videos because I love opal, and you’re a talented stone smith. You have also an extraordinary talent for knapping that stands out.

I just recently discovered my love of opal. I remember first learning about opal and how rare and expensive it was long before it was discovered in Ethiopia and so I had always figured it would always be far out of my reach. Just weeks ago I was online and saw a sale on some opals and kind of impulsively bought a couple, a beautiful little 5 carat cross cut Ethiopan cab that I plan on making into a ring someday and a little 2.6 carat honeycomb, and now I'm hooked! I can't stop watching these videos. I don't know what blows me away more, the amazing stones you cut or your incredible generosity! These videos make me want to dance like Zuck. Thank you.

I received opal on the last give away, Australian crystal opal, very high grade, so do I think I will ever win another opal giveaway in my life time, probably not, but that isn't going to stop me from trying. I don't have anything interesting to say except that the videos do not do any of these opals justice, at all, seriously, upon recieving the 1.1 chip and 1.o chip, I about shat myself, because of their pure splendor and beauty. They even look large, for only being the size they Are. Getting them on dob sticks may not be easy, and cabbing them won't be easy but I do think there is something to be done with them. Suggestions welcome. I love this channel, and Donald P. Is a real awesome guy. Glad to have found this channel.

Born and raised in Texas. When I was 5 years old, my father took me to his worksite. He was putting electricity into a home being built. Well, the home didn't have plumbing and I really had to use the restroom. This home was in the middle of nowhere and there were no near bathrooms. So his friend Julie took me to the woods, told me to go. And the handed me Lambs Ear and told me to wipe! With a leaf! (Stachys byzantina, the lamb's-ear or woolly hedgenettle, is a species of flowering plant in the mint family Lamiaceae, native to Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. It is cultivated over much of the temperate world as an ornamental plant, and is naturalised in some locations as an escapee from gardens.) Let me say, it must have worked great if I remembered this all of these years!

Back in the days of the last century, before the Internet, and instant pictures on your phone, my children spotted a clear wing moth while we were living in France. We all thought it was a humming bird so tried to take a photo with an old school 35mm camera. We got the film developed but the pictures were blurred, of course haha so we were no closer to finding out what it was. Now I finally know, so thank you 😊

HA! for those of you who say "youtube isnt dangerous"...this video put me into cardiac arrest! when you made the arrow out of the blue stone, i had to pause the video and recover. by far the best quality video you have produced, not ONLY because of the give-aways, but i really enjoyed seeing pieces of australian and african opals being cut! :) my favorite stone from this video was "geena"....ive cut australian opal for a couple of years now, (i started after watching your videos and being inspired) but ive never seen such a large stone wth such a story...with TWO faces! it would be set in gold and never leave my neck. thankyou!
