Enjoyed video. Rock looks like shale. If it is , it can seal almost like asphalt n your box blade may get lonely. Especially uslly if crowned or graded to bar ditch. The fast forward on the video gives a better appreciation for the operators skill. I think they're skilled anyway. Music selection was outstanding. When you do have to blade it, track your hours n I, feel like, you'll decide the price was probably good. I bought gravel for farm roads 4 years ago. Numerous 2'd n crush n run and it was $525 truckload as I recall. Different area. Different stone. Figfrrent road conditions. Those skid steers aren't cheap. Yikes.

I have to do something like this as well in Texas. It took you 41 truck loads. How many tons each? And what material is it exactly?

It was mixed delivery between some tri axle and quad axle trucks so anywhere between 16 and 20 yard of stone each load. Not sure how many tons it was. The base layer was some medium sized stone that I cant remember what it was. The top layer is all crushed recycled concrete and I am super happy with it. It has held up well for a year now and I have not even had to box blade it once yet.

Why did y’all dig before laying the gravel? I’ve heard that this is wrong because it channels water through your road? What’s your experience been?

It probably depends on where you are and what kind of soil the gravel road is being built on. Our topsoil here is super soft and this piece of land hasn't been used for anything in a very long time so the ground is not compacted at all. We had to remove the top soil to get to the clay otherwise it would have been a never ending battle to keep the mud/soil from eating my stone as it sinks in. Smaller less used service roads/paths around the property will not be dug out like that, but since this was my main road/driveway, I wanted to have it done right so it lasts a long time. It is been in pace for 2 years now and it is solid. Not even a pot hole problem yet and I have not needed to box blade it at all so far.

what was your total cost?

Way over budget😉I was planning for $10K, but went with a company that gave me an estimate for $15k and it ended up costing $16k. I went wider (14-15 ft) than originally planned (12 ft or so) and needed to go a bit deeper (8 - 12 inches in general and some soft areas much deeper than that). He used recycled concrete for the top layers and it turned out great. It has help up really well over the past year, even with how wet it has been. I do not even have any pot holes yet... and have yet to box blade it.

Here in Sacramento, CA they wanted $36 for a 12’x1,000’ gravel driveway. Ridiculous!!!

@@FromScratchRanch Thanks for the numbers. People post videos like this all the time, but without numbers the videos are kind of useless. I’m curious, why didn’t they put down some type of road fabric before putting the gravel in place. Was that done to save costs? If so, how much more would that have added?
