Now that the axle is complete we move onto the Steering box. Removing it and dismantling to determine why it is so tight. We are going to run through the whole of the mechanism to make sure it is as good as we can get it.

Steering box seals can be purchased at old 20 parts company not many people seem to stock those original seal's

Hi Michelle, technically it’s a gearbox, so a gear oil e.g. 80 or 90 weight. However it’s very slow speed I.e. there are no fast spinning elements in there so a 30 or 40 W oil would be fine too. Most farmers had universal tractor oil in abundance and would just use that. One thing to consider is if you ever want to do an oil change, sucking out 40 W is a heck of a lot easier than a 90 W. 😉👍

Hi Chris, thank you. The wiring is very basic on these, I’ve not had a close look at mine yet, but assuming it is in reasonable order I will probably just re-use it. I believe you used to be able to buy them ready made, but I haven’t seen any for a while and I’m not sure how good they were anyway. So the primary circuits are the starter and the charging circuit. On the TEF you don’t have an ignition circuit. Beyond that it’s just the lights (assuming you have any) 😉. Best thing to do is to trace and replace one wire at a time. Once all done then you can bundle them and wrap. Use a cloth wrap not insulation tape! This usually come loose or hardens and cracks. Use super glue to start and end or join the wrap. I was wondering the grit was from sand blasting. I hate sandblasting assembled components.

Hi Lance, yes I suspect that as well as some bits from corrosion around the edge of the steering box. Now that it’s clean I can see there is a fair bit. Not drastic but enough to contribute to that ‘paste’ on the bottom. I’m going to treat all interior surfaces with red oxide spray before reassembly. 👍😉
