For those of you possibly having issues... This is a very informative and helpful video but it (and most of the other KZbin videos related to Moen cartridges) gives the impression that you only have to choose between the 1225 or the 1222 posi-temp models. Turns out older houses (showers installed before 1990) used the full brass, 1200 cartridges, not the 1225. I first tried installing the 1225 and the cartridge leaked. I then pulled out the 1225 and compared it against the old one. I noticed the 1225 length is a bit longer than the old cartridge. I then looked up some more info and found out that my shower requires the 1200 cartridge. Once I installed the 1200, it worked perfectly. Hope this is helpful for the folks with older homes. You can buy the Moen 1200 or the equivalent one by Danco. The Danco version is about 2/3 the cost of the Moen.

Thanks I’m going to try this because I installed the 1225 and had all types of issues and couldn’t figure out what was wrong. The water pressure was off and it didn’t go in very easy. My home was built in the late 50s so hopefully the 1200 works!
@jameslee5361 Жыл бұрын
@@justingtejeda Ideally, you still have the old cartridge you pulled out and you can compare against the 1200 before installing it. Hope it works out for you. Once the correct cartridge is in, there is very little friction and no leak so you'll know right away.
@nottelling9472 Жыл бұрын
@@justingtejeda It should work. My house was build mid 70's. The 1200 worked like a charm. The puller wouldn't touch mine. I ended up using a hardened 12 mm bolt with washers and a little leverage. New one went in slick and I've had no issues.

Thanks for the video! After I removed the retaining pin, the valve didn't come out easily, so your video told me to use the white tool to loosen the valve. I had just replaced the valve less than a year ago, so I was surprised it leaked again so quickly. In my case, there was an old O-ring that was in about 5 pieces. Not sure why that caused a leak, but next time I'll definitely check inside the valve body. I cleaned the valve, re-greased all gasket surfaces and reinstalled with success (no leak)
@theartofplumbing Жыл бұрын
I'm glad the video was helpful for getting that valve loose! Replacing aged O-rings is definitely key to preventing leaks. It's surprising that the valve failed again so soon, but old rubber parts can get brittle and crack over time. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's a good reminder for everyone to carefully inspect inside the valve body for any debris or damaged parts when doing repairs. I appreciate you taking the time to post the details to help others. Have a great day!

[Edit: see reply below this as I may have it backwards?] Thanks for explaining the difference between the 1222 and 1225. The 1222 seems to be the Positemp (handle turns around) whereas the 1225s are Moentrol (handle comes out/up and in/down and can be left at a specific temp.)
@captainwho1 Жыл бұрын
The 1222 can be set for a particular temp. but there is no adjustment for flow rate. The 1225 must be able to be set for a specific flow rate independent of the temp. adjustment.

This video is the truth, I was able to replace my 20 year old cartridge with this diy video. I was unable to remove the cartridge with the supplied white cube or buy using vice grips so I had to run to Ace hardware and buy the puller. The puller I used is stout and worked like a charm. If your old cartridge was like mine it left behind pieces of rubber gasket in the copper line......those remnants resulted in low water pressure. I had to uninstall the cartridge and fish out old pieces of gasket, but once done it was all good. "Core Puller" for Moen part # 45208 at Ace Hardware was $16.00

Thanks for the video...I always forget about the retainer...because I watched your video first, this time I remembered. As I was putting the replacement cartridge in, I was thinking: hmmm can it go in anyway..no up nor down...no left or right...? The retainer of course is the answer: you have to get the replacement cartridge oriented correctly to get the retainer to slip in!!! So that is another very important aspect of the retainer.

My girlfriend and I worked on her shower mixer for hours and finally bought the removal tool but still wasn't working so found a metric long socket and used my Dewalt drill and adjust the hammering real light and switching it back and forth so I wouldn't destroy that plastic tool that came with new cartridge then after getting cartridge to move a quarter turn I installed the puller and finally got it to come out , still wasn't easy but she got it. Now we were told the hard water calcium was the reason but after 25 years there was no deposits anywhere but it appears the chlorine in drinking water Deteriorated the rubber portions of the cartridge to the point of coming apart so it was those pieces that got in the hot an cold entrance tubes and jamming it making it so darn hard to remove we did flush it before installing new cartridge

I feel the need to comment about using a Danco cartridge. I have two bathrooms with the Moen 1225 faucets, one leaks, the other just doesn't get used often so I was going to replace it due to the hard water we have. Well, on the well-used shower/tub, the first Danco leaked at the stem. Bad inner seals. In removing the cartridge, the outer barrel of the Danco did not want to come out. Frankly, it didn't slide in so easily. Once removed, the second Danco leaked. It DID come out easier, but I'm never buying a Danco again. Two out of two leaking out of the package. I would recommend spending the 5 extra bucks and get the OEM. I did that, the part slid in so much smoother, did not leak and works like a charm. Danco parts are clearly (IMO) not built to the same specifications as the OEM.
@theartofplumbing2 жыл бұрын

very helpful, however, I cannot for the life of me get that retainer pin back in lol. UPDATE. ok I finally got it but it took a little of this and that, when using the white ap provide by Moen to remove and replace the cartridge, yes, helpful, however if you just push the cartridge back in place with the cap and think you will get the pin back in, whoa Nelly! That clear plastic sleeve around the cartridge will actually go back further than the overall cartridge itself but you need to give that plastic a little much on its own with a need nose plier, just enough so that the pin will now fit properly. Thank you for the great video!

Tip: The retainer clip should go back in about as easy as he shows. Practice putting in through the slot before installing the new valve and also over the new valve - remember the tabs have to be seated at 12 and 6 o'clock. If the retainer clip is difficult to re-install in you may not have pushed the cartridge all the way in to clear the pathway for the clip below the slot. I had to really get in the shower and give the new valve a good push to get it to seat fully. Broke 2 retainer clips before i realized that.

I replaced a Moen 1225 cartridge yesterday on my shower. Prior to doing it I must have watched 5-6 how-to videos on this and none of them showed what I did that I think made the entire procedure very easy if you have a stubborn cartridge. Mine was an original cartridge that was installed 32 years ago and I thought I'd have a very rough time of it. I squirted white vinegar on the end of the cartridge several times for 1.5 days prior to trying to remove it. I then heated the assembly with a hair dryer for 10 minutes before trying to extract it and I think the heat softened up the old o-rings and seals. To remove, I used a Moen cartridge puller (104421). It was around $24 but a whole lot cheaper than paying a plumber to do this. Once the puller was secured to the cartridge, I rotated it in place back and forth slightly until I finally was able to rotate it 180 degrees. After that, I screwed down the nut on the puller and the cartridge came out with very little effort.

Thanks I have the clarification. We guessed at the plumbing shop as to which one it would be and he guessed 1222 EHHHHH WRONG! The fact the end was different and there was no way this side of hell that you could twist it. When you said 1225 and showed it with the fine camera work. Helps. It has been only been bought 3 years ago, since I bought it from a Contractors shop so had to do the switch. Mine is still CHROME METAL as it is (47 years old)----at least you were changing out an old one. I have watched other videos where they change a new one for a new one. THOSE ARE A JOKE.

Just an FYI for anyone about to take on this job. Save yourself some money and contact Moen customer support before buying a new cartridge. They will replace your cartridge for free after providing them your info and pictures. I was about to buy a new cartridge myself before finding this info out. Hopefully this can help someone else out

When my Moen shower quit, I turned on the water until I got to the reduced flow, let it run for a few minutes, went a little more, let it run, finally all the way and let it run, This warmed up the old cartridge enough so that it started flowing like new after I shut it on and off a few times.

Glad you showed the retainer pin not snapping in right away. I have prayed over getting these back in, never thought or saw anyone use pliers to pressure them in. I have tried to move the cartridge 0.5 mm one way or the other, feared using pliers could warp the pin and then you can't complete the job, turn the water back on at the meter and are generally messed.

Hope you see this, first thank you I've used this video a few times. That's where the problem is, my cartridges seem to fail very quickly lasting only 1-2 years before dripping comes back. Is it possible there was an old seating ring of some kind at the base of the pipe that failed? Just trying to guess why the dripping always comes back. Thank you.

I use these videos so often during the past 15 years and rarely comment back with helpful tips. And if it hasn't already been mentioned. It is imparitive to pre lubricate with "plumber's grease" to extend the life of these cartridges rather than replacing too often. I would lubricate all sliding and twisting bushings twice over before installing. Do not use multi purpose grease or any other type other than plumber's grease that is (non hydroscopic) water resistant and residual.
