What’s got three motors, 1234 horsepower, does 0-60 in less than two seconds and has more boot space than a Tesla? Why, it’s a car you might well never have heard of.
The Lucid Air’s range-topping model is the Sapphire, a super-saloon that seeks not just to be faster, but also comfier, quieter, cleverer, more efficient and much roomier than the competition. It’s the sort of car born out of dissatisfaction with the world - in this case company CEO Peter Rawlinson’s frustration (while working as Tesla’s chief engineer) that the Model S wasn’t as good as it could’ve been.
Top Gear’s Ollie Kew has been to drive it, and interview the Lucid boss to find out what drives him….

With Lucid's drive unit nominally rated at 620hp (I have also seen 670 quoted) the 3-motor Sapphire could hypothetically be tuned for at least 1860hp. No street tires could withstand that and the impact on other car components, well, it would be challenging to create a warranty.

I own Lucid stock, and the performance has been meh for a long time. I blame their management, and lack of imagination when it comes to the style of the cars. Air GT owner, and while I could afford the Sapphire, I really do not want to give up the Range of the GT. For me, range is King, in fact any time you hear someone talk about an EV Range is the number 1 thing people talk about or consider. Yet for some unknown reason the speed is all anyone on KZbin talks about. Tesla is a one trick pony "I'm fast"....who cares. My Air GT consistantly gets 470 miles of range, and if i want to blow the doors off a supercar, I can, and not even put it into Sprint mode. EA fast charging for me is great, 300 miles added in 20 to 30 minutes. I call that a Win. If I charge up at home, 9000W of solar combined with the 40kWh Battery backup system on my house keeps everything in check and balanced so that the grid never gets hit any harder than 500W. I call that a Win too! So while the Sapphire has the performance numbers, that quite honestly we could never use, my Air GT does get excellent range, and who in their right mind couldn't be happy with 819HP? Nice Video and especially the insiders look at the corporate level. That was very insightful....Thanks. Good Luck.
@vinn283
@vinn283 28 күн бұрын
grand touring trim is already plenty fast. The sapphire is nice and all, but it's just too expensive tho. With the price drops now, I'd say the GT trim is probably worth it now. For that range and speed at 110k, its more than worth it in my opinion. Heck, I would say even the Air Pure is pretty fast already. If it was a few months ago, I would say lucid is not worth it due to how expensive they were. My roommate just got the brand new model 3 and for the price of a "luxury" vehicle. It was not luxurious whatsoever. It looked pretty basic to me. Almost the same as toyota interior. I'm not paying that kind of money for a basic interior car.

I have been driving my Lucid Air GT (a mere 819hp) for two years as of this month. While it lacks the top shelf go-fast tricks of the Sapphire it does have, to my senses, a more comfortable and appealing interior. As to handling and performance, the endless list of glowing reviews and awards speak to that. I look forward to having a go sometime in the lively RWD version. At well under 1/3 of the Sapphire's price (less than a base Model S) it should be quite popular.

I think things will go the other way. Horse Power has peaked. No point in having much more than you can use! Especially if the tyres can't handle it! If they can it serverely impacts tyre life! Also you will be using bigger, stronger, heavier & more powerful motors than you can effectively & efficiently. Three motors are one too many. Two, either one front one rear or two rear. So lose a motor reduce the other saves hell of a lot weight which would add to the range!

Most brands hide their CEOs behind PR teams and only ask curated questions but this interview asked some pretty interesting questions. Mainly about Tesla, the OE manufacturers and even the Chinese competition. Peter answered with his honest opinions, he seems very ambitious and I cannot wait to see more from the company. Though if you asks me the Sapphire being more than double the price of a Plaid cannot be written off, its a bit of an apples to oranges comparison with that price delta.

Great interview, I see Lucid as a long term investment that is currently bargain and undervalue. think Lucid's car and battery is really high quality, as it needs to build more affordable EV and push for SUV gravity, and stronger financial metrics (Free cash flow and cost cutting) to build brand of moat over long term. I look forward for Lucid's company future potentials.

Now if only they could make a small volume car like a VW Golf or Opel Astra with the same engineering prowess for 30k. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Unfortunately consumers have a habit of ignoring technical prowess and history is littered with examples of amazing products that failed despite their innovation. I really hope that Lucid avoids that fate. Whilst legacy manufacturers flounder around trying to work out what to do, the engineering led approach by Lucid has produced one the most outstanding designs available today. SUVs are what people want to buy though and if they can get theirs over the line, I think their future looks bright. Great video and fascinating interview, love Ollie’s style. 👍

Lucid has great technology and engineering. They should have tried to form a partnership like Rimac did with Porsche. Rimac got Bugatti and money from Porsche in return for a shareholding in their company and access to their technology. I wonder if Lucid would benefit from being part of Mercedes or BMW?

Lucid has hands down some of the finest EV engineering in the automotive industry. However, the clock is ticking and they need to quickly become profitable which requires a keen understanding of successful vehicle marketing.

Lucid might be the only electric-only manufacturer that genuinely excites me, and it is 100% due the engineering minds there and their resourcefulness and dedication to detail. I think they really do want to make the absolute best electric car money can buy. If they take that kind of zeal for engineering and spread it throughout a range of vehicles, they'll be what BMW used to be, but for the electric car buying world.

Kudos to Pete, that's exactly how I'd like to design a car. So rare for engineering priorities to dominate rather than being diluted & manipulated by other demands. I imagine it would be pretty interesting to be involved with such a special product 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Excellent interview and reporting. I've been very doubtful of pure EV's, and a bit less doubtful of hybrids, because liquid fuel is quicker to refill, and it's portability make it better for emergencies. Lucid's advancements do offer some hope; that is, for those who can afford it. Why did I write this, it was two months ago.

This car is truly amazing, would have loved a bit more in depth look at the cars "quirks and features", 😉 but I do love Peter's sophisticated chatter about LUCID and how it is going forward to be sustainable. The only other EV car close to this yhst I prefer is the LOTUS EMEYA, Taycans and Teslas are falling way behind and not even intresting/pioneering anymore. 🤣👍

Really love hearing how much thought has gone into the Lucid. I own a Model S and its "completeness" has Peter's stamp on it. Sad they don't sell more because clearly you are being charged only a fraction of what it costs to build = a lot of car for your money.

Undervalued? They continually disappoint on their numbers every quarter. Burn billions in cash and are far from profitable, bankruptcy is highly more likely than recovery, while wvery day other EV makers are stealing market share.

Now I'm not an EV fan at all, but as an Automotive Technician and lucky enough to also have a dealer license, I just bought a Lucid from the auction seeing as my fiancée rarely travels more than 40km a day. She has been on my ass asking for one for sometime now. So since she's a stay at home wife well right now fiancée she never drove the suv....the Lucid has been problem free and excellent! Plus since she got the vehicle she wanted i used the opportunity to leverage that and get something for myself.

Top Gear and Ollie...this is exactly why your content is must watch and listen to. Incredible insight. Ollie your interview with Peter Rawlinson was one of the best i have listened to. A Welsh genius! Okay so the Saudi investment and funding is questionable. And could be the company's undoing. Yes the Lucid is for the rich [very!] and elite. However, the one thing i do hope for more than anything else is that Lucid totally destroys Tesla as a brand and indeed a company. Yes Lucid has Saudi Arabia links, Tesla has Musk. And he alone is the danger to us all. Oh and the Lucid looks fantastic! A true car, a real electric alternative. Porsche must be quaking in their boots. Thank You, Ollie great interview.

9:11 i got sucked into his story, but then i suddenly remembered that the model S had room for 3 rows of seats. So its in line of expectations, its smaller than a model S so it can't hold 3 rows of seats but it has as much interior room to be as spacious as an LWB S-class
