In this video I walk through a window bench build. I used 2x4s for the frame, 1/4 inch plywood for the front, 3/4 inch plywood for the top, and 1x3 boards for the trim. The total dimensions of the bench are 102 inches wide, 16 inches deep, and 25 inches high.
I was able to complete this project for just under $125 because I already had; 1/4 inch plywood, 3/4 inch plywood, paint and primer, screws, nails, and wood filler. If you do not have these materials I would estimate an additional $100-$125 in materials cost.
Everything I used can be purchased through Home Depot, Lowes, or Amazon.
Working on making a cushion next!
If there is something I missed or you have done a similar project feel free to comment tips below. I am happy to answer any questions.

There is no need for a frame. 1/2” or 3/4” plywood would be substantially stronger, allow for better interior, and is easily trimmed with 1x material.

your padding is not supposed to go over the tack strip, only the carpet. The padding goes right up to the edge of the tack strip. but, it turned out looking good. Oh, and they sell the correct vent transitions to go from the opening you have to the same opening you put in the wood.
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 3 жыл бұрын

Thanks for the straightforward video and information on the steps you took. Just one question. Did you find you had a very small overhang on the lids once you put the hinges in? I don’t want to add a handle so was hoping there’sa slight lip that enables you to lift the lid easily.
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! There is no overhang on this one but we can still easily open them. I suggested drilling a finger hole into the top to make it even easier to open since ours is covered with cushions now. My wife said it’s fine without the holes so I just left them as is.
@cbrm3067
@cbrm3067 Жыл бұрын
Yes I was thinking of a finger hole but if you’re finding it works as it is then maybe I’ll wait and see. I’ve watched the video many times now can’t do it everyday as it’s for our Daughter but the frame is finished. So thanks once again for this excellent demonstration.

Hey man - great video! How did you attach the 2x4 uprights to the top and bottom of the frame? I don’t have a pocket hole jig so trying to work around it
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 Жыл бұрын
I did use pocket holes but you could easily just angle a screw into it and sink it into the 2x4. Pocket holes just hide the screws but everything will be hidden in this so it doesn’t really matter.

Carpet won't catch into the tack strips with the pad under there. The pad should be cut back further to butt up next to the tack strip.

We are working on a window bench seat with storage right now, and we have a vent similar to yours. My question is, why did you allow room for the vent within the storage. Was that to allow the storage to be climate controlled?
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure I understand your question. I extended the vent so the vent wasn’t covered by the bench. I made a platform inside the bench so we wouldn’t loose storage. Does that answer your question?
@ashleydieter9323
@ashleydieter9323 3 жыл бұрын
@@taylorstools777 It looks like your vent is 1/2 and 1/2. Half of it is lined up with the ductwork and the other half is exposed within the storage part of the bench. Does that make sense?
@taylorstools777
@taylorstools777 3 жыл бұрын
@@ashleydieter9323 Ohhh yes you are right. The vent is not centered on that wall and I didn't want to angle the 'vent extension' and risk reducing airflow. So yes some of the air from that vent is allowed inside the bench. based on where I had the two vertical dividers. I knew I wanted three compartments for the bench. It is not something you can notice looking at it now that it is complete and the room heats/cools as it did before. Does that help?
