I think one thing machinists, engineers and other _technical types_ (to use a term borrowed from Big Clive) is that we all share an interest in tools and machinery regardless of it's age and regardless of our age and we all like to ponder on its use and it's story. Thanks for sharing those pieces of history that most of us viewers wil never get to see in person Mr Pete.

Mr Pete, I watch all of your videos, love them, they take me back to my youth. I'm 70 years old and thanks to you I got back into machining three years ago. I have acquired two lathes and Bridgeport milling machine along with a wide selection of accessories for them. Thanks to you and your videos I have kicked the "old man " out of my life. Remember if you can help even one person like me your videos are not a waste of time. You have given me a new outlook on life! Thank again and God bless you, keep up the great work!!!😊

You inspired me. The wife just asked me yesterday if we could go do something instead of not exchanging Christmas gifts with each other this year? I have never taken a river cruise. Your example was taking deep root and then you sealed the idea with the Samuel Clemons statue. I am an enormous fan of Mark Twain having read and reread "everything" he published including his private correspondence and essays. Too bad that they kept the museum work benches behind glass. It reduces the need for dusting and controls thievery, but the glare presented a challenge. Midwest Old Threshers in Mount Pleasant, IA includes a functioning steam driven line shaft replica machine shop. Dayton, OH has an industrial museum village featuring Dayton Industries in the carillon tower park. Gerstner, Wright Brothers, Huffy are among the featured museums. Each industry or manufacturer has its own building along a pleasant park stroll. We pass the Gerstner plant annually driving HWY 35. I force the wife to pay homage.

I was always a big fan of Mark twain. Wish I would’ve had my wife take my picture next to him. I read most of his books. He was the one responsible for giving me a love for the river. He was the one that inspired me to build the raft, video coming up. He was the one that inspired us to take the 2000 mile boat trip down the Mississippi. I would love to see those other museums

Thank you for sharing this experience with us! It is amazing that everything in that video was made entirely buy human hands. Over the last few decades, it seems we have been moving so far towards computer automation, that eventually all of this knowledge will be lost. I am a Union Ironworker by trade and did a whole apprenticeship and learned my craft from those before me. I have a small machine shop at my house and have been watching your videos for a while now. I have my kids out there all the time, teaching them welding skills and metal fabrication. Its so great to see you have your grandson out in your shop. We have to pass our knowledge down to the next generation or it will all be lost. God Bless you and your family over the holidays.

Totally agree. In fact, most of it has already lost. Diversity and other insane things are what people and the government want.
@johnmunn7748

Agreed. That's why I believe it's up to us as craftsman, to be sure to pass the knowledge we have down to our children. The death of the trade Unions was the death of this nation as far as I'm concerned. For thousands of years that's how knowledge was passed down. Sure , people took advantage along the way, as is human nature, but the core principle of trade unions is to keep the craft alive. Be safe , and God bless

Was in Japan recently and stumbled upon a metal working shop down a backstreet. The old gent showed me around inside. Was like stepping back in time with a very old electric motor driving an overhead lineshaft. The lineshaft drove drills, grinders saws and other tools by flat belting.

Lyle - Thank you for a most interesting posting. The museum looks intriguing - as is any old tool box or shop one might find. You never know what will turn up. Later in his life your 'inspiration' spent a lot of time about 15 miles from where I live and is buried there - his wife was born and raised there. Some of his most famous writing was done while there in summers. Dale

No - the mansion is in Hartford, CT. Been there as well, a nice period house. But he spent a lot of time in Elmira, NY - that was where his wife was from. They were married in Elmira and would summer at the family farm (Quarry Farm) up on Jerusalem Hill - overlooks the city. He had a study built there in an octagon shape, reminiscent of the pilot house on a river boat. He did have an interesting life - and one heck of a wit.

Fantastic Mr. Pete. I will tell you that I worked 28 years for a company headquartered in East Dubuque and every year they dragged us to the corporate office for a managers meeting. One afternoon was entertainment and they'd literally drag me around a 18 hole golf course while I pretended to play golf (image chopping snakes with a hoe). If I had known this museum was just across the river I would have played hooky from the golf afternoon and visited the museum instead. I'll bet 28 visits would have given me great entertainment and knowledge of the history of the place. Than you for sharing this, video and still pictures. And loved the side topic of your river adventures.

Neat video and travels! Mark Twain. Two fathoms deep. About 12 feet. That crazy steam engine on the line shaft was squawking pretty good. Buffalo Bill's birthplace? Neat. I played him on stage (yes, a mechanic and home machinist too) some years back in a play called Annie Get Your Gun. Great fun! Already had the beard. Squirrel! Lookin' GOOD, Mr. Pete! I love the water too. I bought a 16' Jon Boat this year to put on the Susquehanna River where I go fishing now that I am retired. I used a canoe for years, but am now too old for that; I can only paddle 1/2 MPH upstream! 😜 I did a LOT of work on the boat prior to launch. I used-up a lot of my scrap aluminum, that I scavenged from dumpster-diving over the past few decades. 😄 Fabricated a forward storage compartment and rewired the whole thing! Added seats & lights... you are invited to come down for some channel cats or smallies ANYTIME! You have my address...

I live less than an hour and a half from Dubuque and have never been to the museum. Got to get that on my list for this summer.

Yes, there is a casino right next to it. I would guess more people go in the casino than they do to the museum, tells a little bit about our society. Quite a nice motels are that’s where we stayed right on the water.

I remember crossing smaller rivers in Wisconsin with my folks. Kind of flimsy fairies that were scary. I know I misspell fairy. We were in a 51 Plymouth, gray.

Lyle, nice shots of the shop. I imagine that they fabricated or repaired anything that came through the doors or moved on the river. I too have taken journeys on the Ohio, the Mississippi, and the Delaware. Take care.

I was surprised that the paddle wheel had two drive chains providing propulsion. I wonder how well a split paddle would have worked? The operator could use that, along with the rudder, to help with steering by putting one in forward and the other in reverse to turn tighter radiuses. Towmotors today use that system for steering, but with big diesel props. Thanks.

The reason that there are two Drive chains is because the ships architect was a cautious man that wore both suspenders, and a belt

Mr. Pete even if the photos of the trip to Florida are not in good condition I think a large percentage of your long time viewers would still be interested in the story. I remember you mentioning the raft but this is the first time that I have heard of the cement tub trip.

I too, enjoy riverboat cruises. Locally there is a boat called the Lorena Sternwheeler, a smaller paddle boat, one can schedule and pay a very modest sum and enjoy a ride up and down the Muskingum (pron. muss-KING-gum) river. Mostly a lunch or dinner cruise and occasionally they have Civil War reenacting off the banks of the river and characters aboard the boat. Keeping history alive and well. Good time.

That sounds like fun My one, and only Christmas present was a cruise with dinner on the Illinois river on a paddle wheel boat We will take that cruise next summer, but it will be a short one only a few hours

@@mrpete222 Does indeed sound like a good time. If the captain will permit you get a video of the engine room. That's something I've never seen locally. Based on feeble memory of rides past in my youth, I can guess the Lorena is powered by a Detroit diesel 2 cycle engine of some quantity. And this is a wild guess. Love it.
