The tower of power Mercury engines were state of the art then and when running properly can still run with todays outboards of similar hp ratings. I for one loved the loud, screaming noise they made when dusting Johnson and Evinrude. My 115hp tower on my closed bow 17' cobia was able to not just keep up, but slowly pull away from my friends same boat with a 135hp Evinrude. As you said, good times I'd love to revisit.
