I split 4"x5" x 7' posts out of a 4' logs years ago. We used a tool called a checker to start the split. I wish I could find one today, I have some cedar logs coming.

Hey Dave, be proud ! You've come a long way in filming and in log/rail/post splitting. You're getting there. Working smarter and not as hard. Those wooden splitters we talked about before are just to open the split farther (wedge it open) that's why they were used. You're doing a great job around there. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Fred! I am very surprised on the channels growth, we really enjoy documenting everything and looking back on our progresses! I have yet to make any of those wedges but I sure need too, make a few different widths and shapes sure would make it easier! Hope all is well your way, take care my friend!

Now in 2023 this is a huge savings a cost of a 4x4 PT is 3x what it was when this video was made. If I had some cedar trees down I would do this for sure. Unfortunately I have pine and oak neither are good for fence posts.....

Good job Dave. This is almost a dying art. What most people don't know is, these locusts post will outlast anything that you can buy from Lowe's or Home Depot. I've got a fence around my property that my dad cut and split locust posts 50-60 years ago. The posts will outlast the wire. Thanks Dave i enjoyed this.

I have never spilt locust for posts before....is it best to use seasoned wood or split while green? Yours sounded as if well seasoned. 👍🤠
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm 5 жыл бұрын
Living The Dream thanks for watching! Umm from what I have noticed it doesn’t make to much of a difference, although if green i would make sure to remove the bark! My very first video before I numbered them was me splitting a green log. For me the easiest for green wood is to split it and let it set for a year or so and the bark should pull off fairly easy! Take care :)

My honey locust are covered top to bottom with thorns , up to 6 inches long ... Did yours start out that way or are they a different species? If they were covered with thorns, what is your dethorning process ? SW Ohio here
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! These I believe are yellow locust, with the bark on the only have smaller thorns on the newer branches, nothing on the trunk and midsections. I’ve never used honey locust but I’d assume it would split similarly! I would probably use a machete to de thorn! Hope that helps, take care!

man that is way to much work, it would take years to put in 700 to 1000 posts, the part of the video spitting just that one into 4, was only a few min, long, but i bet that took well over an hour of back braking work to do...and most likly the only one you did that day.. i would use them round and keep going.. we dont have that kind of tree here, we are covered in cedar trees, they are light weight and last years in the ground, most cedar trees you can get one 8 or 10 foot 10 to 16 inch corner post, and the rest of the tree will give you a few good 8 inch posts and 1 6 inch and 1 or 2 3 to 4 inch post, sure you will find the odd tree that is 20 ro 26 inchs at the but but the center is normally a black hole, them you saw up for lumber.. if i had to split them posts i would weld up a hydrolic spliter with a 8 foot ram cylinder, that plugs into the tractor and hooks to the 3 point, tons of big cylinder laying around,, i most likely have 3 or 4 8 foot ones a few 4 foot ones out back i picked up over the years, for free
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm 5 жыл бұрын
Arnold Romppai it is surprisingly and only took a matter of around 20 min to get 8 post and that included moving the camera around! It wouldn’t be for everyone but well worth it for me! I’m sure if I would put all of my rounds in a pile and worked then all in one spot I could get a dandy pile pretty quick and easy! Thanks for watching Arnold, take care!

@@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm i broke my back up at work years ago, just watching, i feel the pain, there must not be any knots it them trees then, thats a hard wood is it not?
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm
@OhioHillTopsHobbyFarm 5 жыл бұрын
Arnold Romppai yes it’s pretty hard but the grains allow it to split real nice. It’s my favorite wood to burn, burns long and hot. The second log had an old limb knot on the side but I guess you just have to eye it up to quest the best way to either avoid the knot or sometimes the knot will still separate nicely!
