I'd bet your guest speaker's UPT classmate (prior service Army helicoptor pilot) who got selected for FB-111s was Stephen Luebert. He was my FB-111 squadron in '86-'88 and was a very inspirational leader.

I was in the 5 foot 9 bomb wing for 12 years after being a CP, and IPU in the Buff (G and D)I was a pilot in the 393rd BS. The wing sweep control was only on the left but you could reach across the left seater as an IP. With certain stores and flap settings the the wing sweep was limited. We test flew the FB at 50000 once in a while and got up to 2.2 to 2.4.

Growing up outside Pease AFB which was a SAC base and home to the 509th BW, this plane was what started all my love for aviation. At 16 ('85) I would sit outside the base and watch them working the pattern day & night with my radio shack scanner. My older brother saw the one that crashed in the Atlantic Heights thankfully not killing anyone. Would love to go back in time and photograph these with my current gear.

@@lmj06 They were very close to the F-111C with their longer 70 foot wingspan, upgraded landing gear and heavier max gross takeoff than "regular" F-111 variants. The FB-111A's became F-111Gs in USAF service which Australia purchased 15 to use alongside its F-111C "Pig" fleet. The FB-111A and the F-111C Aussie variant both had missions that were similar. Putting bombs on targets of strategic interest to Australia. They didnt buy FB-111A's directly, they were converted to "G"'s prior to the Australian purchase. RAAF never had FB-111's, we had F-111's. The F-111C's (aussie version) however did have FB-111 wings and landing gear because that is what the RAAF wanted. The FB-111 was specifically a nuclear bomber, not what the RAAF needs

Can we get Jell-O back to host the episodes? I’m sorry but Ken is a really boring host
@FighterPilotPodcast3 жыл бұрын
His first time out the shoot, but thank you for the feedback. Interviewing is a fine art, takes practice!
@kennethkatz82783 жыл бұрын
Ken here. Jell-O is more talented than I am plus he is far more experienced. I'm not in his league. OTOH, in my opinion the guest was great and the podcast was very informative about both the FB-111A and SAC in the Cold War. So in my totally biased opinion, I thought that the episode was good despite my personal shortcomings. In addition, by bringing on new hosts with new networks of people to interview, FPP expands it horizons which I think is a good thing. There was another factor here. Jell-O generally interviews people who are peers, broadly speaking. So there is a bit of give and taking and joshing around. There certainly was when I was the guest on the B-52 episode. Colonel Moran is considerably older than I am. He could have been my squadron commander. So I was naturally more deferential. Same dynamic will be at work in the next episode when I interview Lt Col Thompson. I hope that you can look past the host and enjoy the outstanding guest.
@Roboambo3 жыл бұрын
I disagree, I feel that Ken comes from a nice technical/ engineering perspective, similar to the one that Sunshine used to occupy.
@LRRPFco523 жыл бұрын
@@kennethkatz8278 Ken has an interview style that suits people with an aviation background and familiarity well. Jell-O warps his mind to structure his questions down to Joe Blow street-level, knows nothing about aviation, caters to people not familiar with these subjects. I obviously prefer someone who starts from a certain aviation background, but that might limit the audience accessibility or interest.
