What do narrowboat brokers do and should you use one, either to sell or buy a boat? These questions and more are answered in a sit-down interview with James Millsop of brokerage firm Rugby Boats, based at Stowe Hill Wharf in Weedon, Northamptonshire.

I have no idea how ITV, BBC or whatever British TV network you worked for ever let you get away. Your work is most informative and with your excellent editing, your stories seem to come alive with each and every one. Field reporters in the USA would really benefit watching your B-roll work. I have worked with many TV personalities and you would have been at the top of my list when I was working. Keep up the good work.

I think that is the nicest compliment I've ever been paid (including in my time at ITV, where I was largely regarded as just another video journalist). Thank you, that's made my day. Cheers :-)

@@CruisingTheCut I absolutely agree with the above compliment, I worked for short time in house government team making department videos that would be for website. Your editing comes out top notch but also it's the little stuff, like making sure you avoid making a video when certain outside conditions are bad. So many amateur's videos often are so focused on themselves they are utterly oblivious to their environment... Your speaking skills reveal a polished presenter that you got as journalist... It's not easy I know I been there. Thank you again.

Some people may find the deposit issue with the broker to be too strict. I don't. There are too many messers in this world. This broker has his head screwed on and weeds out the wrongens.

I watch many of the brokers for sale boats. Rugby does the best job of all in taking you thru the boats they have for sale. I keep looking although my present physical condition will never allow me to live on a narrow boat unless i bring someone or someones to handle the boat and me. Escaping the mess that we are experiencing in the USA makes it very appealing. I need to run away...keep on informing us as always..love and luck xox

Good interview; But! - Your man there sounded a bit like your 'well trained' insurance salesman with a ready-made human experience story to justify somewhat 'shady' transactions. Very good interview and on all appearances a top bloke. My boat time has been through helping out the 'senile old bat' on her boat over the years. Sadly I have had to stop because she has a habit of doing things her way, as her brother told me way back when.. "There is the right way, the wrong way, and her way, which will be worse then the wrong way I guarantee you." It has been heartbreaking to watch the decline of the boat as various jobs, against my best advice, have been farmed out to the local Ape with a toolbox or some other cheap idiot and then stuff has inevitably gone catastrophically wrong and I, and often my money, have ended up picking up the pieces and putting it right at twice the expense. A good example which happened after I threw in the towel is that she was convinced by someone on her mooring to replace the heavy duty batteries, 400Ahr if I am remembering right in the bank, (4 X 6V ) with "great batteries he can get at a really good price". My advice was DON'T, at least check what Ahr the new ones are and get back to me before you do anything. What did she do? Went ahead anyway. 3 months later I get a text, " My lights keep going dim, can you come and have a look?" I suspect the 'friend' had weighed in the traction battery pack then used to money to buy 2 camping and caravan 100Ahr batteries from Go Outdoors or the like, on sale no doubt hence the urgency, and made himself a pretty penny. Halving the Ahr capacity of the boat bank and filling the battery bay with nothing better than very expensive ballast. Sorry this is a bit of a moan but I had to vent a bit. Like the batteries will because they can't handle the charge from the boat generators. Hubble bubble indeed!

This and the vlog about Aintree boats are well worth watching. It is interesting and informative getting a look inside the commercial industry side of boats. On another subject, you are having a very bad influence on me Mr Johns. Over 30 years of honest Gongoozling (mostly cut walking) seem to be over. After starting to watch your vlog and others that, it has led too, firstly I find myself tearing up and down the Shropie at a hair splitting 1 to 3 miles per hour on the boat of a family member and now I find that I am booked into doing a course at Birmingham and Midland marine, early in March, in an attempt to gain an Inland Waterways Helmsman's Certificate. I don't think that the great god Goozle will ever forgive me and I'm blaming you and your boat vlog gangsters for that. :)

The way to handle those deposits, when a second or third potential buyer calls up, you tell them their is a buyer that has put a deposit down and you take the other buyers name and number and tell them you will call them if the other buyer pulls out. If you want to give the deposit back to the first buyer, you tell them they get the deposit back when the boat does sell.
@x--.
@x--. 5 жыл бұрын
First, what broker would want the headache of all of that? But setting that aside, given the market for boats, how would "return after sale" deter anyone? As far as "We'll take your name and number..." and then what, the buyer is just going to piddle around? Nope, they're going to keep looking instead of stopping and going to check out this new one they are interested in; if they find another boat or otherwise convince themselves the broker's boat isn't the right fit, then that's a potential buyer lost. As much as a non-refundable deposit sounded like a scam to me and I'd hate it, it does seem like a smart move for a serious broker who's job is to sell that boat for the best return.

When you asked the question, (what should buyers be looking for?) I was hoping he would answer , Hull and engine/running gear. Anything else like interior, Paint can be done with the boat in the water. A survey would answer these questions. These are the most important things. As long the boat size suits your requirements and the survey checks out, you can change layout and exterior finish a lot cheaper than overplating and mechanical issues.I have known quite a few boat buyers who have fell in love with an interior of a boat and not bothered with a survey.

The non refundable deposit is a manipulative practice that both allows the broker to double dip into profits for buys who have a change of heart and as a pressure selling tactic. If the boat is worth the asking price then it will sell. Using this broker as an example, what tangible value does he bring to the table. How is his "expertise" brought to bear. Where is his liability... for anything. If this was a car or a house would you accept these same low standards... 10%, non-refundable down for the right to purchase the house. Then the inspection shows your 400K house has 39.9K in needed repairs, but too bad about your deposit. Where is the good faith, where's the integrity. I'll also go on the record in saying I think this broker lied about 4 potential buyers for THAT BOAT in one day. IF that were true then he should have returned the mans deposit out of decency alone, because clearly IF a boat generates that much interest in 1 day IT WILL SELL. This means he's either loyal only to his wallet or a liar and shouldn't be trusted either way.
@garyabc
@garyabc 5 жыл бұрын
With 4 + 1 offers in one day the price is too low. Since the broker is working for the seller, the broker should remove the boat from the market and raise the price.

Good information. Good to know if you are getting a boat. Quite dull to watch sadly. But then you were talking with a salesman and those guys are rarely mister excitement :). From this I gathered that you should put as much thought into buying a boat as you would in a house, either way you are making a decision you must live with for years to come.

How funny, before even seeing what your video was on, I watched a Rugby Boats vid on selling Tess. I will say I thought he was older by hearing his voice on all the vids I've watch.

Thank you David for doing this. It should be given a lot of thought before buying a boat and this lifestyle. This answers a lot of questions and gives a good guide to starting.

I think that a deposit should be returnable if the survey is unfavourable , regardless of cost to repair. otherwise the seller may refuse to put the problems right and the buyer has to either pay for repairs or lose his deposit. However if the seller is prepared to pay for the repairs then i think its then okay to keep the deposit if the buyer pulls out. As a matter of interest who would keep the deposit if the buyer pulls out Thinking about it if the buyer is prepared to pay for a survey , then that should show commitment to buy without any need for a deposit Lets face it a decent out of water survey is likely to be around £1000 which certainly shows commitment. if the buyer is prepared to show proof of payment for survey that should be sufficient. After the survey the buyer can then renegotiate via the broker if any work needs to be carried out

Totally agree… like a house.. can tell other viewers it’s already under offer subject to survey … a non refundable deposit is essentially a pre-payment leaving buyer tied to a% issue risk…

Look he’s been totally upfront about it, initially I thought hey that’s harsh but applying more thought to it I understand it. The buyer is warned. It protects the seller and broker from the many many fools messing people around and clogging up the brokers whole operation. Boats displaying as sold for weeks then back on the market when they ring up with some bullshit story. Buyers questions why this boat is back for sale, disappointed sellers asking why the sale has fallen through didn’t the broker check the buyer out. This clear and serious policy will ensure that Rugby boats will have far far far few messed up sales and time wasters, better seller experience which is who they work for and better numbers ultimately. Basically do not buy a boat, have it taken off the market, mess everybody about about then think you can change your mind without losing.

I think having an independent expert checking out the entire structure is a must-do before buying. That and also checking the motor, plumbing and electrics too. Because, as he said. first and foremost - It needs to float. 🙂

Seems kinda dodgy. If a 5k deposit is forfeited I assume it's this bloke who pockets the extra money even if it delays a sale by less than a week? I understand paying a penalty for backing out - but 100% of your deposit seems rather greasy.

It sounds like a sellers' market for sure with the way he described turning down multiple viewings - so I guess he has all the leverage. My gut tells me any market like that where you have to put down big money sight-unseen to even have a shot, be it New York City real estate, antique cars, or used narrowboats, is that you either have the money to not care about the hassle, hidden problems, and layers of middlemen ... or you're going to have such a miserable time it will permanently taint the outcome. Maybe I'm wrong with narrowboats and people have access enough to other boats with common features that they can look at a spec sheet and say "yep, for sure that one will work" vs buying blindly.

Getting into some of your older videos. This is another well done one. The broker you picked to do this with you was a very good choice. I like the way he did not put down other brokers but said there were different types of brokers with different focus and integrity. Great questions and answer video for those looking to buy a boat.
