If you're going to recommend WD Red drives you need to also warm that you need the pro or plus drives and not the terrible SMR drives.
@oliverlison9 ай бұрын
Excatly. WD sercetly changed that. I have had a few SMR failures and I was able to rebuild my NAS on two occassions. SMR drives might have a huge cache but cache is needed to write chuncks of data blocks. Every time the HDD writes something, Datablocks are re-written. This slows down the entire NAS. CMR drives are much faster and are safer for your data.

If I recall correctly there are some limitations when you expand your harddisk array (perhaps also dependant on the RAID setup). There obvioulsy will also be some (partial) file rebuilding involved when you add one or more drives. It might be preferred to use disks of the same storage size otherwise you run the risk of not being able to fully benefit from the entire disk capacity.

Most users don't need a RAID, if you get a single disk failure, it's way easier to use an external backup for the recovery. So, not 4x4TB, but 2x12TB instead and use one in the NAS and one as a external drive for backup.

Great video, but one quick question... Can you please further explain what you meant at 25:30? You mentioned that when adding additional drives it won't erase the new drive, but earlier you said when adding new drive it requires a formatting. I bought the 6-bay system, along with 5 new 20tb drives. However, I have a 20tb from an old NAS system with info and years of data. Are you saying that there's a way to install it w/o having to format it?
@forestchaput5 ай бұрын
Apologies. No, you won’t be able to install that 20TB drive into the NAS and keep the data. It will need to be formatted when you install it. I think what I meant was that if you filled a NAS with five drives and later wanted to add a sixth, the data on the five drives would remain intact, but the sixth drive would need to be erased to become part of the RAID array.

@@forestchaput Thanks, I think I have it all figured out except one little aspect...those silicone pads you are supposed to use with the M.2 SSD drives. Technical support was no help at all. It's like they've never seen their own product and was reading from the same book that I had (the one it came with). If you follow the instructions in the book (I think it started on page 9...don't have it in front of me), it says to open up the port. Then you are to unscrew the screw on the other side where you will plug the M.2 drive in. Then you plug in the drive, and then secure it with the screw you had just taken out. THEN it says to put the silicone pad on the "Top" of the SSD and then close the access door and screw it back in. My problem with this is that, if I do that, the silicone pad will now be stuck to the access door. That means you can't really ever open the access door again unless you want to rip it away from the stuck pad. AND, there is very little space between the SSD and the access panel. You'd have to squish it shut. There is room underneath the M.2 SSD for the pad, but I don't want to go sticking it where it doesn't belong. I got both M.2 drives, the upgraded RAM, and three of the four 22 TB hard drives in the mail (the last one should come on Saturday). So I still have a few days before I turn it on for the first time. You don't really need a whole other video if you want, I just need help from someone who knows what they are talking about to figure out the proper placement for that silicone pad for each of the M.2 drives. Thanks for your time and expertise!

For the 6 & 8 bay NAS, I'm curious why you're not recommending RAID6. Since a big part of *WHY* we're using a RAID array is for data redundancy. By using RAID6, we allow for up to 2 drive failures. In RAID5, we only get one! I have an old QNAP 5-bay device, and over the years I have had multiple HD failures. It's the old adage - it's not if you'll have a HD failure, it's WHEN.

You might be able to. That's a bit beyond my level of expertise though.

Would like to connect everything like you are showing the third way. I have a DECO Mesh Wi-Fi network where I have multiple DECO units in the house one thought is connected into the modem. Now I have one in my office but it is connected to the main unit via Wi-Fi. So would that work if I plugged DECO into the 10Gib router but not sure because its only connected to the main via the Wi-Fi connection. The DECO is AXE5400 Pro. Real newbie here thanks for any help. Dave...

I have to ask one question. I have just 1 drive 22tb I cann't choose raid option and the others I will buy one by one at time(same 22tb). So Will I lose data because of that or not If I choose raid 5 or something like that secure option ?

You will. Get three drives then you explore raid 5 options. Anything under three drives you are limited in raid options.

To get 10GB Speeds all i need to do is buy a 10GB router and plug it into the 10GB ports on my PC and UGREEN? I'm only paying for 1GB internet service? Or am i missing the point here?
@forestchaputАй бұрын
That is correct! That will give you 10Gb connectivity between the NAS and PC.

Thank you for this great video but I already installed the NAS initially but need to re-install from scratch and it doesn't allow me to get in unless I use the correct User ID, NAS Name and Password. How to I just START OVER FRESH INSTALL

Which SSD work for this system? I would like it to be as quite as possible.
@forestchaput8 ай бұрын
You could use it with any SATA SSD - you would just need SSDs in the 2.5" form factor.

For some reason my NAS is unable to have a stable connection to any switch I've used. It tends to disconnect and reconnect at random when plugged in

Weird! Does your computer have a reliable connection to the network?

Great video, and the tip on upgrading to a 10gb switch was worth it's weight in gold! I'm occasionally getting a 100083 error when trying to transfer files between my MacStudio and the UGreen NAS, however. Any ideas on what might be causing this? It doesn't happen on every file and there doesn't seem to be a pattern.

Hi, is this NAS capable to stream 4k movies from Plex I’m trying to get a NAS for my movies. You did a great job explaining the connection process. Thanks!!

It definitely has enough performance, I'm just not sure if there is a Plex application available for it yet.

I got the DXP4800, but on my windows 11 Explorer find the NAS under network, but no Folder inside and I can't add anything. Anybody knows why? The storage space is set up and while the disc check was running there was a folder "personal folder" which I could add anything as well, but that's gone now
@forestchaput6 ай бұрын
I had a similar issue. Maybe create a new "Shared Folder" and see if that fixes it.

Your explanation of how to connect was excellent, however I have a (probably dumb) question. Since the DXP 4800 plus has both 10gb and 2.5 gb ports, could I bypass the switch and get a Thunderbolt to ethernet adapter, as you mentioned, and simply plug my iMac directly into the NAS, bypassing the switch. Then, connect the 2.5gb port on the NAS into my router to provide access via wireless or internet (say with my laptop). This would only be a 1gb connection since that's what my router ethernet ports are. I only have my iMac desktop and a lap top sorely no need for all those additional ports in a switch. Would this work or would I absolutely have to go through a switch for 10gb?

Yes, it actually will work! Check out our advanced setup guide to learn how to configure that.

On windows, I paste the \\Nasname into the file explorer, but it just says “windows cannot access it” what am I missing?
@forestchaput6 ай бұрын
Hmmm. Be sure that the name is exact. If that doesn't work, try \\IPAddress.

Is there anyway to change the username of the admin account? I'm not seeing the option anywhere. Only password and device name.
@forestchaput6 ай бұрын
I think you can deactivate the admin account and create a new account with admin privileges.
