I yelled about music in another vid -- this one is much less intrusive, thanks. That was a really good design process 'discussion.'

Interesting ideas for a shelf layout, dog bone maybe 12 inch radius. My steel mill might fit

I love the scrap yard idea! I saw one in action on the N'Crowd's layout in Houston. It's not something you see very often.

Scrap yards are great. They fit in any space and bring gondolas and flats to the layout.

I absolutely love that layout plan, as it fits perfectly into my proposed takeover of a 10 by 10 spare bedroom corner. Returning after a long long hiatus to N scale, many questions. What is maximum grade ? Also the length of run appears short to accommodate the raised track over the bridges? Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Great layout design, how much bigger would this layout have be to so that a big boy locomotive could run on it?
@DubaiTrains
@DubaiTrains Жыл бұрын
Well this quickly becomes a personal question of compromise. A big boy can run on a 17" circle. Personally I would design the layout for trains that look natural in the space available. Designing specifically for such a specific engine doesn't add up unless you have the space for it. You can run the big boy whenever, but it is not a design point of the layout as there are no operations that realistically justify support such power.

remember big table for big trains and small tables for small trains other way around would look ridiculous! i choose loop to loop on a small n scale table

heh great plan is this possible for Ho and how much bigger would I need to make cheers A

Hi Alan, thanka for reaxhing out. Such table top design doesn't translate well to larger scales as the reach into the layout will be too big. The reach in this design is already at the maximum.

How might this layout work with doing a double track mainline? I want to run primarily passenger trains....
@DubaiTrains
@DubaiTrains 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Reg, it really depends on the space you have. The challenge with passenger trains is the car length. These demand large radii curves which in turn demands either deeper benchwork or better, an around the room setup.
@reginaldholt7497
@reginaldholt7497 2 жыл бұрын
@@DubaiTrains Thanks for getting back to me! As i understand it, we are talking minimum 18" radius curves that I guess would put benchwork depth of at least 3 feet. Is that right? if thats the case, seems like I would lean toward doing some of peninsula/ jutting out into the center of room layout? Not sure about attempting a flip up bridge etc
@DubaiTrains
@DubaiTrains 2 жыл бұрын
18" as a minimum for N scale will be good. Ill be making a flip up bridge soon. That might give you some ideas.

@DubaiTrains
@DubaiTrains 2 жыл бұрын
Hi JFA, the twice around the room never got finished. That idea was scrapped. I can design a cuatom layout for you if you are interested. One that fits your space and needs.
@YourFriendAsh

Oh I understand. That would be great, but how much would it cost? I’m on a budget and wanted to do an L shaped layout, but your design was the only operational version. I loved the way that the train would be able to go in a loop instead of back and forth like most shelf layouts. I have quite a lot of space, and love the way your ho plans come together. Thanks!

@@YourFriendAsh A lot of track plans out there are unfortunatly not really usefull when it comes to operations. I can send you a questionnaire to get the process started. Can you send me an email? It is in the 'about' section of my channel.

Hello: I have been watching your videos for a while now and I am wondering, It looks like you just put your track on plywood. don't you use foam or cork for quiet or scenery build up. Thank You Gem629

Hi George, thanks for watching. I did add a layer of 4mm cork to dampen the noise. Is also gives me a little extra play to make e.g. a ditch or the likes. Here is the video covering that and more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXS7m3xoZcqof9U

I think the meaning of 'Shelf' has gotten lost here . . . An Inglenook type layout, or a small shunting yard in a space, say, 36-48" x 12-18" is more what it's about, not something that can take a continual circuit.
@DubaiTrains

Agreed that the word shelf is flexible. This layout is made on an actual shelf hanging from the wall.
