Is this even a shotgun slug or did we accidently invent a new type of ammo? This video is part 2 of our last video based on suggestions our viewers gave us. Yes we read comments! We loaded 8 of the resized and reshaped coins but did not bother to stick them together. The results even surprised us.
Big thanks to our Patreon supporters!

I wouldn't discount (haha) the loose coins due to the accuracy issues in this video. Keep in mind that the previous shots were with a different gun, a different sight, and a different shooter. Any one of those variables could have caused the inconsistency in results seen in this video.

I think every shooter or shotgun, does any differens, because they are experiensed shooters with their own firearm, and they are really tyrying to hit target as accurate as possible. @@jormalonnberg1578 the gun it's fired out of can absolutely have an effect on the behavior of a projectile. I wonder if slowing down through transonic is causing them to scatter? If these were put into a sabot, you might be able to make them 'explode' reliably at different distances by changing up the powder load and cone taper. The pennies are probably sticking together from the low pressure vacuum each cone forms behind it. I would love to see how it flies if you left the front and back coin like you had here, but trimmed grooves into the middle ones like little Ninja stars.

A lot of serious science begins with someone seeing something and saying “hmm, that’s unexpected” and you got plenty of unexpected results with these experiments. I was very surprised by the gel block result. For that matter I’m surprised by any result that didn’t end up with seriously deformed coins even though zinc is harder than pure copper. We have seen you guys (and the occasional gal) test all kinds of strange inventions from various machinists, welders and in one case a glass blower but here we are testing improvised pocket change loads. Bolting the coins together seems a bit silly to me, but I have a vague memory of you testing stacks of washers bolted together. Ever tried stacks of loose washers? How do you suppose the penny stacks would do in the clay block?

@@taofledermaus Not necessarily. Well maybe for the steel punch-outs, but not the washers. I'm sure there's penny sized (or close enough) washers. Made of zinc too, just like modern pennies. I guess you could also drill a hole through a stack of pennies and insert a bolt or something through it. Not to keep the pennies together, but more as a way to add weight or a "penetrator." The stacked "nesting cup" disc idea could be a series all its own. The flight characteristics are just so intriguing. Especially that one camera shot showing the "slug" randomly break apart in midair. You could always ask your community for help with the work by submitting their own stacked disc "slugs." You have one of the best communities here on YT.

@@taofledermaus First thing I have to say is your community is full of people who want to contribute but can't see a way how which makes the most sense for them. That out of the way, I also said you could drill a hole in a stack of pennies. Wouldn't be too hard with a drill press and a simple rig. With the right bit, you could do an entire 50¢ roll in a single go. That's enough for 6 "slugs." Don't forget what I said about your community. Some people may have washers or whatnot just laying around collecting dust and/or waiting to be recycled. There's no shame in asking your community through posts or in videos for any kind of support. You can be a little more proactive in that. Like it or not, this "penny slug" and your DIY approach has just opnened the door for a lot of people who feel intimidated by your other contributors, like anyone submitting precision machined projectiles or foreign made ones not necessarily available in the US. You just showed us that slugs can be made for literally _pennies on the dollar._ You have the whole _You Make It, We Mach It_ series which is fantastic, but it does require people actually make things. Some people aren't as crafty, and the precision made or machined submissions are a treat to see, but it limits the potential behind the idea. Everyone is hurting financially, and not everyone can afford to contribute to your finances, but still have a strong desire to contribute nonetheless. I know some submit targets, which are great (and why I think you could also make another series based on "homemade bulletproof" for instance), and others send things like cork or wads. To cut things shorter, there's loads of people who love you, want to contribute, don't see a way how, might be in a different region where different laws apply, or some other reason which prevents them from contributing. That however doesn't mean they can't, and as much as making money is great, cutting costs and saving money means a lot too. I might be naīve to think this, but I believe by asking for material support, or service support, both you and the audience benefit. There's probably a lot more people out there that are swimming in things that could help you, but never thought they could. Savvy tradesmen like myself also collect a lot of stuff on the off chance we need it, or can make a few extra bucks from it. Scraps especially. I've got several 5 gallon buckets full of copper scrap working plumbing and HVAC. *LEGALLY* obtained mind you. I think you'll find that if you're in need of a material and ask for it, whether it be as simple as hot glue sticks, or washers of an exact or close diamter, you'll get tons more responses from people swimming with materials they could wish to help you with, driving down your cost as well as their own. You increase audience participation which also drives up viewership. For instance, it might be cheaper for someone to send you 2 pounds of ceramic tiles to use as a target (since they get these things in scrap from a trade) than it would be to both buy the tiles and send them to you, or even send you a note and money to buy them. That might sound silly how just sending a note and money is more expensive than a package, but it's true. Exchange rates, laws, reality is just silly right now. If you read this far, I thank you. I just wanted to provide food for thought. Thank you again and have a great day. P.S. There's a certain Bullsyeye Breanna I'd like to see again because she is such a great shot and fun personality. Because of her, I'd also suggest theowing it out there that you ask any woman you stumble upon who can shoot if they'd be willing to appear on camera and get more female shooters. Not a woke thing, but a common sense thing. My mother who is in decent shape for a nearly 80 year old woman and grew up in the NYC area, bever took any shhh from anybody is at a point in her life where she recognizes firearms to be the great equalizer since her physical abilities have been waning, and she was very anti-firearm until I showed her how much fun it can be. She's at the range more than I am right now. Helps her keep track of her vision and hand-eye coordination.

If you can make it stay together for 80 yards and then if you aim to hit the ground a couple of feet before the animal, then separate it could be a very effective round for small game. What I think we're seeing is that the first slug is punching through the air, leaving a low-pressure area behind. The pennies will move towards the low-pressure area. If the tail sways, it probably makes the aim worse. You could probably stack more pennies until the hole the supersonic train makes closes up. Once they get subsonic, they'll scatter. I think the bullets can separate easier because the lead makes a smaller hole through the air, and the following bullet catches the turbulence.

You might be experiencing the Burton bullet effect. Some hollow based musket bullets of the mid 1800s (generally called Minie balls) has grooves around the base. These were not grease grooves. They added stability. If the ball didn’t catch the rifling well enough and started to tumble the grooves would add drag to the side of the base that was kicking out. This would straighten out the projectile. The sides of those penny stacks are nothing but grooves. The front penny creates a shock wave with a low pressure area behind it. That’s probably what’s keeping them stacked. Once they slow down enough that the shock wave gets weak they start to separate. You noted that the wad tagged along in the wake. The Pennie’s just did that better.
@jimyeats
@jimyeats 11 ай бұрын
I think the grooves are attributed to Francois Tamisier. I believe he was the one who specifically contributed that characteristic to the Minie ball that improves it’s aerodynamic stability. Burton came up - after the minie ball was introduced - with the more effective expansion of the skirt via even deeper conical cavity at the base. Delvigne was responsible for the overall shape. All of those features helped make the Minie ball great, for it’s time.

3000 years from now archeologists will find those deformed pennies 30 feet deep in the ground along what used-to-be a river bed and they'll declare that they discovered an ancient north american ritual site where domed and deformed pennies were ritually sacrificed to honor the 2A gods.

Another great video. I’ve been enjoying this channel for years and hopefully for many more to come. I do however ask that you don’t insult the intelligence of your viewers. Turkish shotguns have been on the US market for several years. A bullpup imported under 4 different brand names is not going to be $800, $1200, or $1600. No matter how much the shooter may want to hype it up and sell a few, we’re aware of what it really is.

Flashlights are illegal on KZbin??? If that's one of those Turkish shotguns then you shouldn't have paid more then $250-300 for it. Didn't see the first video - did you make sure that you were using all of the same sort of penny since pre 83 are copper while 83 forward are zinc - if so, what sort did you use?

Twelve rounds, twelve coins and I’d pay you if if you found one so I could keep it. They never found any, they shattered with hollow points, or went sailing miles away in the sky if it was fmj. I was such a hack.

I think the unglued coins only worked like that because of inertia. The 1st coin got smacked with 7 other coins behind traveling with the same velocity pushing it through the jelly… 🤔. I’m just guessing but I think that’s why it worked like it did.

*An interesting (and cheap) follow up* would be to take cheap bird shot shells, dump the lead shot into shallow but bottomed holes in a plank of wood, melt the pellets in place to become discs, then bend the lead discs to the correct size, stack + glue, then shove the resulting slug back into the same hull they came from, using the original powder charge, re-crimp and see how those do. Could a slug made from bent + stacked lead discs be as economical and perform better than wax slugs? Idea being, easy to make, very effective slugs which fly better than wax slugs - without having to change the powder charge or make custom sabots (use original shot cup).

Is that flashlight censor another brainfart from youtubes higher ups ? like when they first wanted to ban how you cant show how to instal a supressor and then it got very wild when you could not even insert a magazine. Least that one is mildest of those all but still annoying and most likely wont affect that many of people because they simply enforce rules like the fuck they want. Or just a lazy and doing that manually to couple guntubers to stirr up community.

Another great example of penny slugs. I suppose it is a vacuum being produced by the speed of the pennies and the displaced air forming a pocket for the pennies to travel as a whole. It is similar I suppose to a cyclist travelling behind a truck or van making use of the same air pocket technique and goi g faster than would be usual. Thanks Mike and Jeff good post, take care guys 👍

The Apollo capsule had a round bottom for reentry. The shockwave where most of the heating would occur would be ahead of and not at the surface (if it got to the capsule, they used a material which would create a lot of gas to act as a cushion and heat block) A supersonic jet uses a point to make as small a hole as possible, and it needs smooth air for the engines. Transonic is the tough part, because the shockwave moves, and the object has to deal with turbulent air.

Defacing currency can be a serious crime (high penalties) depending on the country. In the US the law is rather sensible: As long as it is not done for fraudulent purposes it is fine. You can do anything you want with your penny as long as you do not claim it is a Dollar :P

how about stacking/loading them backwards to see if they spread out that way? I'm thinking because they are stack and shot with the bulge in front the test of the coins are drafting in each others wake/vacuum, maybe by loading the coins with the concave pointing out it will catch the wind and that will spread them out. that's my 2 cents

The coin at the front slows down first, each coin behind it can only really push the ones in front. The irregular surface of the coins prob doesn't make all that much difference given their mass.

Commenting as I watch (so maybe already desccribed).. at 3:45 - when the stack loses structure, might simply be that it is going to a transonnic regime which is known to create a lot of weird and unexpected shearing forces - buffeting and other sorts of vibration accross a wide spectrum of frequencies - Think of all the planes being lost to those strange behaviour, and the amount of engineering that was needed to make supersonic flight viable !

The stack disbands/explodes when it hits the ground because the ground is more dense than the stack. However the dummy is less dense so the dummy is the one to take damage and loose physical coherence. I would be curious to see something similar with wood plates lined up like the pennies but against a hard wood or even a steel target.

Their is no point being on KZbin anymore, it's impossible to have a conversation with all the banned words. And I got zero notifications anymore for comments I made, KZbin has officially become irrelevant and will continue to decline. The only reason they are not in decline now is because they are putting advertising on many channels who never see a cent. I am using YT less and less all the time. The hole point of KZbin was to interact with others, can't do that anymore so what's the point of being here?

@@taofledermaus True enough, I misremembered the statute. For some reason I misremembered it to boil down to it being circulating the coin that made the alteration illegal. Here's the actual statute, so you can throw it in the face of smart-asses like me without having to search for it. 18-331: "provides criminal penalties for anyone who fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the Mints of the United States. This statute means that you may be violating the law if you change the appearance of the coin and fraudulently represent it to be other than the altered coin that it is. As a matter of policy, the Mint does not promote coloring, plating or altering U.S. coinage: however, there are no sanctions against such activity absent fraudulent intent."
