My best advice is not to answer your phone unless you know who is calling. I never answer my mobile phone unless that person is in my contacts. If it is important enough they can leave a message on my voicemail. Regarding texts, I delete all texts to me that I don't know. We are bombarded by all these scammers on a daily basis. Don't engage, hit delete.

If you win money in a lottery or sweepstakes, you don't dish out money at the beginning to pay to the taxes. Taxes are automatically paid by the winnings.

Once this devolved into swear words, it became ridiculous. Knowing proper etiquette and grammar would help these scammers a great deal. Phrases like: Your name came up. Were sorry, we have to close your account today. Warning, your account is infected with xx viruses. And one of my favorites, we have tried to contact you multiple times. If these idiots ever get truly sophisticated, we may be in trouble, but until then, please don't respond to emails and phone calls out of the blue. About 99% of the time, they are scammers these days. I'm sorry for this lady.

The PCH scam is not complex, nor are the scammers clever. They simply call people until they find someone willing to go alone with their foolishness. The victim does the heavy lifting required to make the scam work.

ONLY pick up calls that show the names of your known contacts. If someone you don't know calls, you don't need or want to talk to them. If they happen to be legit, either they'll find another way to contact you, or it wasn't important anyway.

These scammers are extremely uneducated about US taxes. I've wasted their time. I tell them to subtract my taxes from my winnings. They'll claim they're not allowed. They've asked me for numbers off the back of gift cards. I've told them I'll give them the cards when they arrive with my prize. They'll refuse for 2 reasons, 1) they're rarely in the US and are never coming, 2) they would need to appear in person and get arrested. I've asked them questions about taxes and they're clueless. If the potential victims ask the right questions, they'll be exposed in seconds for what they are. They can't pay taxes for you if they don't have your SS# and your tax bracket. If they don't ask for it, that's a red flag. Another red flag is that the IRS cannot compel someone to pay taxes on money not yet received. That tax amount would be larger than the assets of most Americans. Never give them that SS number.
