They always played in attack, and they played themselves and let others play, so their matches contained a lot of scoring chances on both sides and it was impossible to take your eyes off the game. For me, they were the epitome of the spirit of Dutch national team football in the days of Johan Cruyff.

1986 was a crazy year, every European team had a chance to seize it with their world class players. South America had Brazil, Argentina (not favorites but Maradona effect) Uruguay, Paraguay, etc. Mexico was led by Madrid legend Hugo Sanchez. Crazy how Denmark was the most hyped and absolutely demolished the group stage, yet ended up being demolished themselves because Spain was no sleeper either. Denmark could've gone far with their mentality in the group stage, but so could've other teams as well. It was everybody's game. Nowadays you only think France will take it 😭

Teams that beat Germany in the group stage are cursed: Hungary 1954: after an 8-3 drubbing in round 1 in which their best player was injured, Hungary blew a 2-0 lead in the final to give Germany their first title, and unwittingly began the curse East Germany 1974 - finished 3rd in the 2nd group stage. West Germany went on to win the final. Algeria 1982 - Was absolutely robbed of their rightful place in the next round by the Anschluss game. West Germany advanced to the final Denmark 1986 - lost 5-1 to Spain in the second round, West Germany advanced to the final. Serbia 2010 - went out in the group stage. Germany advanced to the semi finals. Mexico 2018 - went out in the round of 16 for the 7th consecutive time (at least in this case the Germans suffered too, as they were also eliminated). Billis Lopez not exactly the same, but Hungary played a friendly vs west Germany right before the ‘54 World Cup and beat them 8-3, embarrassing them. Only to lose 2-3 in the final. Best team to not win a World Cup.

Arnesen's red card has shades of Beckham vs Simeone in '98 about it. Maybe the Danish referee Kim Nielsen remembered this incident and it had some influence? In both cases the reaction of the "victim" was disgustingly overreated. Matthaus here should be as ashamed as Simeone.

Yes, Denmark won, but they got totally ripped off by the refs. Laudrup was not offside on the goal that he made in the first half. There was a clear penalty committed against Arneson, which the ref did not call.

Was there an offside goal in this game for Denmark? I know that Beckenbauer got enraged about an Australian linesman saying that he doesn't know why they put people in charge from countries that don't know anything about football. Nowadays the World Cup is constantly put in countries where the people don't know anything about the sport and we even need to change the rules to cater to them. And endless help by FIFA to get them as far as possible bc those are big markets.

5:10 might be the scene Beckenbauer was referring to. But I don't see any offside here. We can't tell at the moment the pass is played, but he doesn't seem to have been offside based on the positioning. But that angle is very misleading. @5:27 He is infinitely far ahead of the defense though. So based on the positioning here it could have been offside. The German defender seemed to have been a lot closer to the Danish winger in the initial angle.

Agreed. John Eriksen was an amazing striker however. His score rate on club level was simply immense. But it was hard to get into the national team, because of other great strikers like Elkjaer and Laudrup. Sad destiny for Eriksen later on. May he rest in peace.

A_Swift well as I see it, the germans seemed to have tried to put up a real fight here. Denmark (like Germany) had a brilliant team back then, so 2-0 would be a pretty realistic result for Denmark on a good day. At this point both the teams were secured a place in the last 16, and both the germans and the danes had some reserves come On The field, for example for Denmark: Mølby, Eriksen, Simonsen, Høgh etc. So no team played at full strength

@@SukinSzkot Nope. The official name of "West" Germany is exactly the same as Germany's name now - 'Bundesrepublik Deutschland'. The "West" part of the name was a, somewhat lazy, identifier to differentiate between the two Germanys. When the German reunification happened, it was not considered as the creation of a new country, but rather the enlarging of an existing country. Saying it should be called "West Germany" is like stomping your feet and trying to insist the United States actually had a different name before it bought Alaska.
