As a portrait artist who's been creating for about 7 years now the biggest lesson I've learned is that you should never stop learning. I know all these techniques but I'm here anyway because sometimes I find something new and useful. When it comes to art there are no limits. It's an expression and an extension of your imagination and creativity. The day I stop trying to learn more is the day I'll give up art and probably my sanity.

2:02: "You could also just use the backslash key". The creator means forward slash. Great video!

hey, thank u dude
@joeyblaze1944 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've noticed in the industry that everyone refers to the forward slash as backslash. It's been this way so long I don't even bother differentiating or correcting people anymore. I just call the thing a backslash and keep it movin' because that's what people know lol

Learned more from this video than I have with my professor at uni in half a semester :/
@joeyblaze1944 жыл бұрын
I went to school for graphic design and I learned more from youtube and practice than any classroom. By the time I was graduating I had my professors coming to me for advice for how to use certain tools and create certain effects. Sure schools can show you how to use certain tools and techniques, but all they're really doing is opening a door for you. You have to walk through that door and apply those things yourself and that's where the real learning comes in. School taught me how to brand a business and all that fun nonsense. I taught myself how to be a portrait artist. Wish I'd known that before I put myself in all that debt. 🤦♂️
@OrincyWhyteDesigns4 жыл бұрын
Oficado Graphics i was just talking about this ! School only teaches the basics. At no point in college was I taught the blend or mesh tool 🤦🏾♀️

Big tip: Ditch the pathfinder panel completely by pressing Shift + M to use the Shape builder tool! It's a lot more intuitive and visual, since you can merge shapes by dragging in between them, divide by clicking one shape, and removing by holding down Alt! Sometimes, it's better to use the pathfinder for more complex shapes with lots of merging, but other than those scenarios, the Shape Builder tool is very amazing.

I'd consider myself pretty advanced as far as using illustrator and I create some rather in-depth pieces. I still like to watch tutorials and design videos from other artists because I feel like there's always more to learn. When every new artist hits a certain point where they're comfortable using the tools they know and it works for them, they feel as if they've mastered it and there's no more to learn. I felt this way a while but I've slowly learned that you can't depend on thinking you know all there is to know and that there's always some new technique or way of approaching things that may be more efficient. I love when I find out something useful that I thought I already knew but used in a different way. I've always created my fills individually and I never use stroke and expand. I use the pen tool for everything as I feel it creates a more authentic hand drawn feel but when you showed the part about the global coloring you opened a whole new door for me. When you have 742081 layers and (I do portrait work so similar colors is something that comes up a lot in regards to shadows/highlighting) you have to recolor certain parts of the illustration, the magic wand just doesn't cut it because obviously it picks up all similar colors. Global color just made my life 10 million times easier, and I've been doing this type of work for yearssss. So fellow artists, take note of this mans techniques! Take note of all techniques and play with all the tools! Don't be afraid to mess up because it's the mistakes that teach us and guide us to better artistry! Thanks for this great video man!
