Ashley C. I understand that but a lot of the stuff people say involving my hair (yes even black people included) is inherently rude and racist aside form being invasive. I feel like its really a manners issue. And it's not my job to educate. If people really were that concerned they'd do their own research and watch videos like these.
@Hippie-chick8 жыл бұрын
THIS video is offensive. I'd love to learn more about black people's hair, because it's actually very intriguing - and different than mine, so I don't know much about it. I could always assume, but I prefer not to do that. However, this video makes me think that my curiosity is wrong and racist, so maybe I understand more why some people, of any race (hey, Latinos don't have hair like black people...how come you don't slam on them for not knowing what it's like?) may have some boundary issues. This video is spreading negative beliefs about white people in general. If it was about black people, it would be deemed racist.

I am also white and don't do this, but I recognize the importance of the video. See, denying that it happens doesn't solve the problem. You can't just let racism off with a free pass because pointing it out makes you feel bad. By watching, understanding, and appreciating the content of this video you'll be more likely to see these actions when they appear and more likely to try and stop them. omg everything that this video has said is so true , I wore an afro to the first day of ninth grade ,and a the girl sitting next to me wouldn't stop staring at me maybe because she's never seen some one wear an afro or because it was so large and curly and then without even introducing her self she says "hey is that weave? " I was so shocked and offended . and then she starts to touch my hair and says "hey can I touch it?" . Might I say I had an extremely long talk with her about black natural hair and how it was really rude to ask some one "is that weave?" when you don't even know them. But she turned out to be a really nice person ,and now were friends,so I guess this was a "win win" situation because I got to educate some one about our hair while also making a friend.😊

I'm white and would never say something so rude about someone's hair, it is part of who they are. And it in no way hinders them at work or anyone else. I am aware of how a black person's hair is cared for and the different hairstyles are something natural to them as different hairstyles are natural to everyone. It's no different from anyone else doing their hair (except a bit more work goes into it for some people). I like watching videos of different forms of care and styles of black people's hair. I don't know why I just do. My favorite hairstyle is the Afro because it reminds me of trees blooming in Spring which reminds me of Gaia the goddess of nature. Gaia is the ancestral mother of all life, which reminds me that all life started in Africa. My sister says I'm weird for thinking that, but that is just how my mind works.

Cierrah Page I've had three black girls yank on my hair and demand that I tell them where I "got my hair". I'm just trying to point out that this isn't a race specific issue. People are just curious. Some are a little more... forceful.. than others.

Being honest as well, I've had more black women tell me it looks unkept, I'm never going to get a job, it looks like you didn't style it, what you gonna do about those naps and more other races amazed when I come to work with my flat twists, totally amazed on who long it's getting since I cut it. The only black people who like my naps are black men and other natural ladies...kind of weird that they paint it like only white people hate it or something. Out of all the styles I've had my hair in, my boyfriend (who's white) loves when I leave my hair in an afro lol

And when state the fact that "It's all mine" - "I don't wear fake hair"; they walk away with "screw face". XD

How long have you had your dreads?
@lclaney62408 жыл бұрын
I consider my hair "Locs", for a couple of reasons: 1. The word dread is negative, and in my opinion, there's nothing negative about natural hair. :)I "Dreadlocks came from the word dread for the meaning of fear and horror." 2. Many others, especially Rastas consider their hair as dread(locs)...to each his own. :) Now...to answer your question...XD I've been growing my "Locs" for 14+ years, but, recently, decided to go "Free Form" :)

@lclaney62408 жыл бұрын
I understand about being apprehensive about committing, but, once you start growing them; going through the process, you'll see that it's not so bad. And you can style them in so many styles. I have created over 25 loc styles. :)

Not hating against weaves or braids because I enjoy protective styling but I do love my hair too.... Also, I won't make the mistake of flat irons in the winter ever again....

Speaking as a person who's 3/4s white, I have to say that none of these thoughts have ever occurred to me. The only thing that has surprised me about black hair is what my Jamaican sister in law (who's a hairdresser) once told me; black hair is more sensitive to bleach than white hair. I've always wondered why black women would put themselves through the health risks of chemically treating their hair to straighten it. Lack of acceptance by other colors in society? Having been socialized to believe that it was unattractive? I'm so glad that natural hair is considered fashionable these days. My niece wears her hair natural, and not only is she stunningly beautiful, she's also watching after her health and respecting herself.

I think some people are getting confused. Black people don't mind a little curiosity about our hair. As we grow to embrace our natural hair and learn new styles we don't mind sharing. The problem is that some people begin to feel they are entitled to that information. I've had co-workers and clients at work ask me from across the room, "Is that your real hair?". I think that is rude, annoying and to me it's an attempt to make me feel uncomfortable or "out" me in some way. It's one thing to ask me questions to my face once in a while when I do something different, or something unique that you've never seen before. It's another to berate me every--- I mean EVERY single time I change my hair style you feel entitled to all the details about how i did it and why I have changed my hairstyle. The worst is when they tell you they that they preferred your previous style---took hours hours to flat iron with chase method, oil, heat protection (guess the style.......) I find it offensive because I notice when people change hairstyles. But because they are white people and I know that whatever they do to their hair, I could not necessarily or easily do with mine, I don't bother to ask about the ins and outs and complexities or non-complexities involved in their styling process. Why don't they feel that way too? Why do white people feel they have the right to know how we got out hair that way? Why do they think that can freely give me suggestions on styles without me asking? It's gotten to the point where I avoid people at work because I dont want to be asked about my hair. I need to find a way to get it through their heads.
