I just have to tell this story. Many years ago now at my first ever job working in a used bookstore, I had a regular customer who exclusively read science fiction. He looked to be about 85, wore snake skin boots and matching cowboy hat every time he came in, and was extremely well spoken. You could tell he had read a lot of books in his life. One day out of the blue, he told me this story. As a child he would play in this park every day( name of the park escapes me. It's been maybe 15 years since I heard this). Every day, a well dressed man would walk into the park, sit on a bench for a bit to look at a statue then leave. Eventually his little boy curiosity kicked in and he made a point of walking next to the man to the bench, sat with him, told him stories and waved goodbye every day. Come to find out, the man was Tolkien. My customer told me he had a great sense of humor though seemed melancholy. Always had a smile for him and on the last day he saw him, Tolkien patted his head as he left and quietly slipped back out of his life. I really wish 16 year old me had thought to ask that customer his name. I'm sad I'll never know his story now that I'm an adult. Working in a privately owned book store was the most interesting job I've ever had. I was with them until it closed and am still friends with the old owners. I met the best and worst of mundane humanity in that shop...

@eris I have many neat memories from that job. I'm American, but my favorite customer was an Australian war bride who married an Italian solider and moved to the states. She was a nurse in the war. Her son was a professor at the local university who specialized in insect studies and in his free time staged Civil War reenactments. They were a joy to chat with. Such fun people and such interesting stories. Jobs like that allow you to meet such a wide variety of people honestly. Of course there were also some awful people, but once you knew who was who it was simpler to navigate 🤷♀️ Edit to say WW2 war bride! Missed an important detail

Have you seen The History Boys? It isn’t quite dark academia. But it reminded me of School Ties and despite it not being that dark, it does have a lot of tropes usually in dark academia, like the eccentric teacher and his loyal band of students who are all way too smart. There’s definitely melodrama and darker plot points but it’s done with a lot of humor and levity.

Hi! Have you seen the film "The young Sherlock Holmes " (1985)? It takes place in a boarding school with several murders and a ancient secret. Also yo could love Flavia de Luce's books series. Flavia loves chemistry, poisons, knowledge and solve mysteries. hugs!!

I went to the cinema twice to see Tolkien and then bought it on amazon and made all my family watch it! My little brother who was 10 at the time loves it🥰

I just finished watching Tolkien last night. And though it made me cry at some points, it was so beautifully done I loved it.

I’m a dark academia man, I sometimes dabble in steampunk or gothic but dark academia is my day to day.

A book I know which has dark academia vibes is "down a dark hall"...I think his dark materials series also fits.
