I just have to tell this story. Many years ago now at my first ever job working in a used bookstore, I had a regular customer who exclusively read science fiction. He looked to be about 85, wore snake skin boots and matching cowboy hat every time he came in, and was extremely well spoken. You could tell he had read a lot of books in his life. One day out of the blue, he told me this story. As a child he would play in this park every day( name of the park escapes me. It's been maybe 15 years since I heard this). Every day, a well dressed man would walk into the park, sit on a bench for a bit to look at a statue then leave. Eventually his little boy curiosity kicked in and he made a point of walking next to the man to the bench, sat with him, told him stories and waved goodbye every day. Come to find out, the man was Tolkien. My customer told me he had a great sense of humor though seemed melancholy. Always had a smile for him and on the last day he saw him, Tolkien patted his head as he left and quietly slipped back out of his life. I really wish 16 year old me had thought to ask that customer his name. I'm sad I'll never know his story now that I'm an adult. Working in a privately owned book store was the most interesting job I've ever had. I was with them until it closed and am still friends with the old owners. I met the best and worst of mundane humanity in that shop...

@eris I have many neat memories from that job. I'm American, but my favorite customer was an Australian war bride who married an Italian solider and moved to the states. She was a nurse in the war. Her son was a professor at the local university who specialized in insect studies and in his free time staged Civil War reenactments. They were a joy to chat with. Such fun people and such interesting stories. Jobs like that allow you to meet such a wide variety of people honestly. Of course there were also some awful people, but once you knew who was who it was simpler to navigate 🤷‍♀️ Edit to say WW2 war bride! Missed an important detail

@@carodame9419 God, this comment hurts not just my heart, it hurts my soul, even though if I'm not into the light academia aesthetic. I could also say: dark acedemia is for those who are freakin scared to show their innerst sensitive feelings and can't open their heart. It's just a claim, not the truth. Please, don't judge another human for another way of connectedness to sth. Let people be, who and what they want to be and let them decide how they want to create their life. Please think about it. We all have to learn to accept each other for our difference. It's easier to judge than to accept our withhumans for their being. With kindest regards 🍁🍂✨

Book 1 is The Tale of Hill Top Farm, and basically each of the books in the series goes through a different section of Bea's life in the Lake District and includes much factual biographical info while also being a highly enjoyable cottagecore cozy mystery. Have you seen The History Boys? It isn’t quite dark academia. But it reminded me of School Ties and despite it not being that dark, it does have a lot of tropes usually in dark academia, like the eccentric teacher and his loyal band of students who are all way too smart. There’s definitely melodrama and darker plot points but it’s done with a lot of humor and levity.

i love dressing for the Dark Academia aesthetic but i live in Southern Africa where we get 300 days of boiling sun a year so i'll just look weird with my coats and sweaters UGHHHHHH i'm tryna covert the aesthetic to summer vibes instead of autumn

You could probably get by with more somber colors but use seer sucker, linen, and cotton fabrics and using the same styling. I'm older, but have always been a dark academic and I lived in San Diego. Now that I live where it's cold it's such a casual place that people think I'm going to a funeral if I dress this way.

A bit off topic - but I would love to see a video made about how you store/display/organize your books! Bookshelf space is always an issue for me, so I am curious about how you do it since you get own/haul so many beautiful books!

Hahaha as of now they’re laying all over my bedroom floor 😫 My problem is that I want these really nice, fancy (and way too expansive) bookshelves. I haven’t bought some cheap temporary ones because it feels like a waste of money 😂 I’m currently building some hanging shelves but I actually don’t have a nice place to store my books 😂 Hopefully that’ll change soon! 🙈

I'm surprised you didn;t mention The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I found a book on Amazon called The Shadows by Alyne de Winter that definitely fits this genre. It takes place in an English girls boarding school run by witches and there's murder and its really suspenseful. Its too bad more people haven't read it because its really good.

A Series of Unfortunate Events and the Northern Lights trilogy are also dark academia, either the books or the tv adaptations. A lot of His Dark Materials takes place in and around universities and involves scholars in the pursuit of knowledge. ASOUE is about a secret society of explorers and inventors which a group of children are trying to learn about while dodging their horrible uncle. One book/series of episodes in particular takes place in a boarding school.
