I think it's not fully true dark academia in that there's not really violence, secretive, strong internal conflict or murder type dark. There is the war but it's not integral to the plot early on. It's more light academia.

i adore that movie. it really got overshadowed :( definitely should be on everyones watchlist

Hmm I feel like After the Dark (2013) might fit in well to a fair few of those requirements but I'm not sure if it necessarily feels Super DA more DA Lite

Cracks (2009) and The Moth Diaries (2011) and The Hole (2001) come to mind as some of my favorite DA movies.

A Beautiful Mind and A Theory of Everything are really good DA movies, even though they might not check all the boxes for what might constitute a DA film.

Oh yes it’s definitely a very academic film indeed. Also a plus that it’s a true story

Also, Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) or the remake (2018) (not as good in my opinion as the original) are favorites, too.

It wasn't my favorite movie, but I would probably say "Saltburn" - it takes place at Oxford and a gothic mansion called Saltburn. The storyline mimicked "The Talented Mr. Ripley" which I actually liked much better, but "Saltburn" is aesthetically appealing to watch (it reminded me of a Sofia Coppola film).

Scent of a Woman is also DA. A commoner attending a fancy prep school being setup for stuff he didn't do, while also learning about life from an, albeit, reluctant mentor.

The WOODS (2006) set in mid century New England..a girls boarding school, or any of the St. Trinian’s films of the 50’s or the modern ones done in 2007…although they’re more “cheeky hellion posh schoolgirls running amok” dark comedies.

I'm going to recommend Madame X based on the 1908 French play 'La Femme X'. It's a black and white high society murder mystery. Not set in a school but the old film vibe is definitely DA.

2006 the covenant… it is supernatural but has rich kids (friend group), posh school, secrets and death. Not to be confused with 2023 the covenant which is a war film.

the imitation game is also very dark academia there are mathematicians who are basically geniuses trying to build a computer to help defeat the axis during ww2. it's soo good and the setting is amazing and it's based on the true story of alan turing

That it can be set in France answers an important question I have. As with Goth Rock, there seems to be this unspoken thing it can only be set in the UK. But almost everything Ive enjoyed has tended to be either in France ( think Hannibal Rising ) or in a French colony ( Algeria, or even the US in an AU. )

To me dark academia isn't that but the real things is more oxford holmes type old not romance or weird stuff tho like clean mystery murder like Murdoch mysteries or something and like harry Potter so the academic plus greek or language art nothing else like.. to me some things ruin everything
