my thought is that by the time he sprays the ether into the air filter then goes back around and runs the grid heater for 20 seconds all the ether has evaporated anyway. Don't think he's getting any useful benefit from it

Dont have enough cranking power. Throw out that electronic controlled pos of a battery charger. Get on older one with manual dials and when you put it on engine start it will crank that truck fast. Trust me i have alot of these trucks. Plus a fresh set of batteries goes along way. my trucks always start from 100°f down to -20°f. Your truck will start way faster tho trust me. And floor it as well until it catches adding more fuel helps alot as well

Plugging it in helps too. that battery is toast!

I own a sort of electric blanket for the battery that keeps it warm when you plug your truck in. Probably the best purchase I’ve ever made

similar to how my 87 Mercedes 300D starts, straight 6 mechanically fuel injected diesel with 15w 40 those first turn overs kill my battery faster than anything, ether works but too much will lock it of course

How long does it usually take to start on freezing cold mornings? Does it take longer when it hasn't been used for several days?
@alphadiesel5 ай бұрын
It can take longer if it’s really cold. Main thing is to keep the fuel from jelling up or it’ll never start.
@busher695 ай бұрын
Depending on how cold you're talking about. Your fuel cannot jell, if it does, it won't start. Dodge, GM and Ford all have a heat device that heats the air either going into the ncombustions chamber or inside the combustion chamber. These heat the air inside the combustion chamber which helps the fuel ignite during start-up. These devices usually work down to 30 to 40 below 0.

I'm looking for an older Dodge diesel truck. Which years/motors are the best? 1998's ?
@alphadiesel5 ай бұрын
You really can’t go wrong with any 5.9 engine. The best setup for longevity and ease of maintenance in my opinion is a 12 valve Cummins with a P pump, paired with a 5 or 6 speed manual transmission, and 4 wheel drive. That will give you a mechanical truck that you can work on yourself and find parts for easily. Stay away from the notorious 53 engine block. They’re prone to cracking on the passenger side. The 53 blocks were only for the 24 valve engines.

I spent my last 20 years working a Cummins distributor on the Industrial side. We drove Dodge Rams. I drove 1995's thru 2006s. If your looking for an older Dodge with a Cummins - any year up to and including 2006 is G O O D. The comment from @alphadiesel is right. If you do your own work and want reliablility beyond believe, the 12 valve P pump in front of a manual trany can't be beat. The 4th Gens - thru 2006 with the 24 valve are elctronically controlled but they give ya at least 350 HP stock. They R U N
@leewalker35144 ай бұрын
I’m partial to the 59 but the 67 is good as long as you leave it stock and what you do if somebody tries to give you a Duramax diesel of any sort don’t walk away Ron I’m a 38 year GM tech just retired that is the worst motor ever ever produced

You would benefit from new batteries and cables brother. And make sure you're using a 5 bottom weight full synthetic. That volt meter being down at 8 while cranking is so not great. Batteries just get old. It sucks.
