I love your accent, I need it as an app on my phone that delivers bad news cause it's so calming! I remember going to a conference once and they got 20 of us round in a circle to share ideas of how a certain idea could be improved. There was a girl using a BSL interpreter to communicate and the general lack of awareness from most of the group (although I'm sure they didn't mean it) was bothering me. It was one of those conversations where one person would stop talking and then somebody would immediately jump on their point as soon as they stopped speaking and the combo of not knowing when to speak and trying to pay attention to her interpreter basically meant that this girl wasn't really getting a chance to say anything. At one point I managed to make an opening for her ("Is there anything you'd like to add?") but it made me appreciate how difficult that situation must be when trying to get involved.

I feel like a convo between the two of us in any public place would be a comedic disaster 😂😂😂 With my autism, I get overwhelmed easily, can't separate background noise from conversations I'm in, and can get really spacey (it's actually a mild dissociation to "protect" myself). This also leads to me starting and not finishing sentences, suddenly forgetting I'm being spoken to, and completely losing track of a conversation 😬 I feel like our spouses would just be sitting there like "what are they even doing?! Do THEY even know?!" 😂

Elizabeth Bulfer my problem would be that I have basically no facial expressions for someone who can't hear the words to work from. I do use AAC sometimes though and I mean it makes me harder to eavesdrop on so it's not all bad

Thank you, Jessica, this is very helpful. Glad to know a notebook or cellphone might ease communication. Eye contact and heightened facial expression are good ideas. Can't believe some people 'test' your hearing by covering their lips - so rude.

marsha831 I type things on my phone a lot when I talk to people with hearing problems. Mostly because I tend to lack mouth movement or facial expressions and they don't get what I said. I thought it would be rude but most of them actually like that I do that.

I'm HoH and the absolute most frustrating thing is when someone is talking and they turn their head away from you. A couple weeks ago my bestie did that to me and I told her I missed what she said. She actually said to me, "I never realized how bad your hearing actually is until that happened." I said, "yeah, I've been telling you that for years."

I love your videos! Growing up in had a friend (sarah) who was deaf and I got a basic sign language book and it was a great bonding experience with Sarah and she taught me games like writing a word on each other's back with our finger and guessing what the other wrote just by what we felt. I really learned a lot from her. I was in a sport with her and as we got older she moved away and life went on. Wish we had kept in touch. You are doing a great job educating people on what the world is like for you and how most of all you just want to be included. I hate that you get the some of the responses you do. But keep up the good work and I wish you and your wife all the best!!!!

Omg the vaguely agreeing nod, I feel you! My adhd makes it so my brain sometimes just stops processing words and I completely lose track of the conversation or I have to ask someone for a third time to repeat what they've said and after a while, you just stop asking and hope you can catch on quickly. The vaguely agreeing nod can be 'you don't say!' 'ah yes' 'continue' or 'wow i totally agree' it's the best. I learned it from the lovely people I assisted in a nursing home, they were my rolemodel in pretending to know what the flip is going on

She wasn't being sarcastic. I asure you, after you repeat the same thing 3 times and we can't understand, we will be very relieved if you write it diwn on your phine or on paper instead! But some might take offense if you do that from the beginning -writing it down- without letting us try to have a fluid conversation by speaking orally first. We make a great effort to try to have orsl conversations, that's why.

Once again NZ is backwards to the rest of the world - our week of the deaf is in May. Im actually curious how you would deal with someone like me who stammers (or goes completely non-verbal at times) due to some of my mental health issues. Me and My ex used to spend a lot of time speaking through text because of it, and its why I started learning NZSL.

Use clear distinct words for things, especially if it's basic. Simple example: talking about toddlers: It drove me nuts when my sister in law taught her baby "Mama" and "Papa" then "ba-ba" for bottle and "papas" for snacks and "bambam" for her hammer toy. Was the kid asking for her mother, her father, a bottle, her toy, or a snack? Take a guess, spin the wheel, only 4 out of 5 chances to be wrong.

brainman67 because babies are just learning how to make words with their mush mouths and vocal cords and this is easier than trying to get them to say more distinctive letters like the letter R in mother and father. I can tell neither of you have children. 🤦‍♀️

I have this burning question for deaf people... Is it harder to lip read someone who is not native/fluent in the language? Since the shape of vowels and general sounds is so much different from language to language I find that it's easily messed up so... How does it affect your lip reading? Or does it affect you at all?

I’m not trying to be rude at all but there is a mental mapping disorder called biid. It makes you feel like a part of your body or a sense doesn’t feel like yours. As a person with biid I would not wish it on my worst enemy. So yes they can say it to be rude but there are cases where they aren’t trying to be rude. Again I’m not trying to be rude if you take offense to this tell me and I will delete my comment.

I do love the point about the phone! I have a question though: Is it okay to not look directly at someone, or at least into their eyes? What I mean by this is that I have autism, and I find it rather difficult to fully 'look' at a person. Also, I do not know if you have done a prior video on this topic, but would you be willing to demonstrate the differences between signing languages?

I think the most important thing is being able to see the lips properly..being a lip reader myself, although I prefer eye contact (because it looks like you are being listened to) I totally understand if you can't look me directly in the eyes (My brother is autistic and doesn't always maintain eye contact). The important thing is being able to see what your mouth is doing :)

Well, isn’t the last one just called good manners? I mean, I have been raised to look at people when they talk to me, and I talk tot hem. Even when it’s just something simple like my sister coming into my room saying ‘we have to go to bed now’ I will still look up from my computer to look at her instead. I don’t get mad if people look at their phones when I speak to them, but inside I’m like “COULD YOU PEASE JUST LOOK UP FROM YOUR PHONE FOR JUST 2 SCONDS” like....you have ALL day to look at your phone.... Well, that turned into a small rant. Oops

I hoping to start my level 3 Signature course next month. Will have to be online as my local college only goes up to level 2. I'm in Cornwall and the closest 3 course is Bristol or Wales 😩

Beautiful look! I've noticed I get stressed out when someone who is deaf comes up to me bc I feel responsible for not knowing sign and wonder if I speak clearly enough for someone to read my lips . I also feel this way if someone who speaks a different language comes up. Maybe it's a Gemini thing since communication is important to us. Working on finishing Spanish and then will work on ASL due to being in America .

I don’t think she was (related again to the tone issue she talked about) when I worked retail and needed to communicate with someone beyond my limited signing grabbing a pad of paper and a pen was always met with “oh thank goodness!” The only time this backfired on me was when the woman wrote in a beautiful old script style cursive and my dyslexia reared it’s ugly head and I couldn’t read it 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oh please yes do, it makes it SO much easier!!! Text it on your phone or whatever, the cellphone is the best thing ever for making deaf life easier. Very few people speak sign but everybody's got a smartphone an Iphone or something similar.

No absolutely not! That would be more helpful for us in the community to understand what you're trying to explain to us. Dry erase boards, notes, texting, or sign language if we have a hard time lip reading. :)

The blank stare face of not understanding what was said and totally lost... I always knew when my mother and grandmother didn't get what I said. Slow down, speak normally, and annunciate. That doesn't mean to distort one's mouth. I does mean not to talk like a New York minute to someone who reads lips or you will get that "I'm totally lost concerning what was said" look or in my case, when I was a kid, an irritated mother or grandmother because I wouldn't slow down and talk to them, especially when I had to play oral interpreter for them. I noticed your sign for toilet and days of the week are different than ASL, but some signs are similar. Makes me wonder if I could easily learn BSL easily since I know ASL. Question about SSE v SEE (Signed Exact English) is SSE similar to SEE or is SSE more like Pidgin Signed English (simple definition- bridges ASL and English)?

Re: "Saturday - the day we clean stuff" Whaat? In (spoken) Swedish, the actual word for "Saturday" comes from an archaic word for washing stuff. But in spoken English it doesn't! What are the odds that BSL Saturday and spoken Swedish Saturday refer to washing but spoken English doesn't!? (Obviously the odds are 100% but I find it amazingly fascinating anyway. Also I have no idea what Saturday is called in Swedish Sign Language, although that would be fun to compare.)

As someone who's lost 80% of her hearing this past few years, I can agree 100% of these things. XD I can still hear sound, but many times its my brain trying to make sense of what its hearing, and many times I miss words.... AND OMG When people turn their heads mid sentence you're just sitting there like.... are they still talking? WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?! LEMME SEE! I really wish I could learn sign language, butt it seems very convoluted... I get by from mostly paying attention to lips and when I cant, a simple "Huh?" makes them look back and repeat it, or "Uh huh" makes them happy so I still have no idea what they said XD

This is awesome - thank you! I'm currently learning Sign Language with People in Action (Leeds, UK) and learning about Deaf culture, and how to communicate with Deaf, deaf and HoH people is a massive thing! I'm also autistic, with chronic fatigue (4-years, and still no official diagnosis) and have suspected EDS (first appointment with rheumatology next week), so can really empathise with a few aspects of your life, and I love learning about the other aspects. I'm also supremely jealous of your self confidence, style and passion - all of which shine through on your videos (even when you do get anxiety, etc., you rarely let it stop you). Thank you for being unapologetically you!

Hi, just wanted to say thank you for making videos like these. I have auditory processing disorder that has only recently been diagnosed which means I have been struggling a lot for a long time. Videos like this make me feel like I'm not the only one who struggles with stuff like 'what on earth is going on' and 'when are you going to stop talking? I don't know because I don't have any clue as to what you are talking about'. I also struggle with interrupting people a lot because I literally just don't know that they are still talking, any clues with how you cope with that?? It also clarifies to me that I am not making it up because I struggle with a lot of these. Your BSL videos are also a lifesaver thank you!!! Thanks again, you're doing great!

Hi, Jessica! I found you through the video you did through BBC3 of "What Not To Say To A Deaf Person." May I begin by saying I love your aesthetic? It's absolutely gorgeous! I live in Canada and have been learning ASL. I already knew before watching your video that ASL and BSL have very different signs, though I was recognising some common signs throughout. However, the sign you used for "hearing"? In ASL, that's the one we use for "deaf"! Ouch! I can just imagine the misunderstanding that could take place as a result of just that simple sign! See you around!

I have Hard of Hearing (HOH) my best friend knows of this situation and continues to mumble and gets irritated at me when I say "what?" like 3 different times. Cell phones, ASL(American Sign Language) would be a GREAT THING.. since hearing aids are so expensive. So I will be sure to tell her of the cell phone idea! Or a dry erase board...

Hi Jessica! I just thought I'd share a bit of funny story with you :) I'm half Italian and I live in Denmark with my "half-deaf" husband (he's completely deaf on one side). I was watching one of your videos at somewhat low volume and the hubby walked by without his hearing aid: "is she Italian? She's gesticulating almost as much as your Italian stepmum." "No, honey, that's actually sign language..." - I chuckled :) Thank you so much for all of your videos, you're such a beautiful and inspiring person!

I’m glad that texting/writing is an option too. I’d love to learn any sign language but I’ve noticed that after I finished chemotherapy and steroids (even years later - finished at the end of 2012), if I’m using my fingers/hands, sometimes they’ll seize up. I uh probably should bring that up with at least one of my doctors. But um money. So yeah, I’m glad that text is okay.
