I moved to Austin from San Antonio a few months ago. The traffic is really not that bad compared to San Antonio. It takes up to 2 hours to drive from South San Antonio to North San Antonio during high traffic times, but it seems to only take 20 minutes to drive through ALL of Central and Downtown Austin. Obviously, that has a lot to do with how much smaller it is but still- everything you need is 10 mins away. Also Austin is 1000x better than San Antonio in nearly every area. The higher costs are definitely worth it.

I was born in Austin 1966, raised in the Montopolis area. At first I was against growth, didn't use the tolls for the first 10 -15 years. Seen first hand 1 bedroom apartments go from $80 a month to well over $1,000. Traffic has gotten so bad in the last 5-6 years, that I don't dare ride my harleys anymore in Austin. In the mid 80s and all through the 90s, I was insanely broke all the time. But then I changed my perspective and outlook with all the money people moving into Austin. And now, In the last 3-5 years, I been averaging $55k at my regular job, and $80-$120k with my online gig part time. Not bad for a guy with a 7th grade education. Also, yes it's expensive to own a home in Austin, but look at the positive side of owning, you can sell in your golden years, and live off the money. I bought in between Austin and Bastrop 10 years ago for $130k, it's now appraised for $489k. God Bless Austin !

It is tough but the opportunities are definitely there. I need me a side gig like that too!

Here's an important rule for Austin: when driving around, if you are not familiar with a particular area, DO NOT assume that if you miss a turn that you can turn on the next road and get back to where you wanted to be. Austin is not a grid, or at least a terrible grid at best. Roads decide to go in random directions for no reason. Railroad tracks and creeks form impassible barriers. Learning to get around is like living on the East Coast in old areas like Research Triangle in NC: you have to learn the secret ways through town, and they're not at all obvious.

You are soooo wrong that Texans hate Austin!!! (at least this Texan) I was born and raised in Houston and Austin is an amazing city! As a native Texan, Austin is one of the most amazing cities in the state and I love to visit it. I DO AGREE, Austin is growing so fast that the city needs to really ramp up the transportation projects. Hopefully they do a better job compared to Houston and that other city up north that is actually the one we hate.

It’s good to hear that! But the ones who hate Austin are definitely louder especially online lol. I love all of Texas. I actually grew up in the piney woods of northeast TX, a few hours up hwy 59 from you

Austin is the best city in Texas, hands down. Dallas is super pretentious, Houston is sweaty ghetto fab, El Paso is Arizona and San Antonio is a distant 2nd to Austin. For every negative, there is easily 3 positives. The city just experienced its boom. This city in 20-30 years is gonna be leaps and bounds above other cities in the United States
@livinginATXnow
@livinginATXnow Жыл бұрын
I think thats a pretty accurate assessment. I've never been to El Paso, but 1. Austin, 2. SA, 3. Dallas, and Houston last for sure. I can't stand the humidity. Austin gets humid but nothing like Houston. Now we just have to figure out how to manage traffic with all these people coming. Got any ideas?

@@livinginATXnowinstead of spending money on the i35, they should buy out the leases from the toll road companies, connect all the frontage roads to stop forcing the use of toll roads or city streets and start building out away from the city. San Antonio is doing it right with their freeway systems and building attractions away from the city center. They are expanding lanes in the outer loops and no tolls. Very smart concept

Yeah the last few years really has had a big influx and made traffic a lot worse. I usually have pretty good luck on the tolls if I need to get through but I don't usually drive a heavier "rush hour" times.

I35 is a pain. This is why I love living right off 183 in Leander/Liberty Hill. I can make it from my door to the AUS terminal in 35 mins straight shot. Love Austin though.

When you build cities for cars, you're going to have traffic problems. They need to be built for public transport like subways, sky trains etc. Bangkok was such a great city to live in for this reason.

Avoid the city proper. Try the adjacent cities for a better experience of the area. Sunset Valley, Bee Cave, Rollingwood, Westlake Hills, Pflugerville, Manor, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Liberty Hill, Leander, Buda, Kyle.

That probably would be helpful, but with how much trouble they have had just expanding the rail line in the Austin metro, I’m not hopeful for that to happen soon.

@@livinginATXnow I live in San Antonio, but I would never move t Austin. Too expensive. But I'm older at 47 with two kids and a wife, so it honestly doesn't fit with me. I'm just boring I guess. I've been to some areas, like the state capitol. That part was nice, except for the people living on the sidewalk down the street from there. Yeah, San Antonio has its nasty areas too, but at least it was cheaper to buy a house in 2012. Does Austin have pros? Sure. But the housing is way too much for what it offers. Just my 2 cents 👍
