That crowd was absolutely lit on that last shot. Imagine if he wound have finished the 300. The roof would have blown clean off.

It's hard enough to bowl a perfect game. It's harder to do it on sport conditions. It's even harder to do it on TV. It's almost inconceivable when your final shot is the difference between 20K and 130K......I give this guy alot of credit.

+pdarksage.. I dont think Pro's bowled on sport condition back then.. Patterns and Sport shots did not become official until around 2000.

The purple rhino pro was my first RR ball and was an absolute tank. Going from urethane to RR left bowlers (esp crankers) in awe of how they sawed racks. My rhino pro was second hand and plugged but I logged a sanctioned 300 game with it the same year as this video. There wasnt $130,000 on the line but I did win the 3rd game sidepot for about $30.

I was fortunate enough to be watching when the very first televised 300 game was bowled. It was bowled by Jack Biondolillo on April Fools day in 1967, no joke.

1954 Championship Bowling, Steve Nagy televised 300. Not a PBA event, but still a televised 300.

I saw this happen at a bowling alley once. Everyone was standing behind him. Final bowl, and one pin was left standing. So heart breaking, but a great memory.

@@nostalgicgaming5944 I got into a league with a buddy of mine from high school when we were like 28 just because it gave us an excuse to hang out..we both sucked but I saw a 300 game, a 299 game and the best one was this dude with Tourette’s..I’m not making fun, it was just so fun to watch him when he was bowling good, his tics would really start gettin wild and some of the guys would make noises at him so he’d tic out and he bowled a 289 and the sound he made when he got that 9 on his 11th ball is something I’ll never forget

Definite choke under enormous tension. Can you imagine what chaos was pulsing through his mind and body during that shot? The fact he didn't explode from the internal forces is itself a surprise, let alone the fact that he wore THAT haircut on national television!!

The Purple Rhino was a phenomenal bowling ball when it came out. It was the first reactive resin bowling ball I owned and it hit like a truck. Mine was a plugged second hand ball but I loved it and shot a ABC sanctioned 300 game with it in 1993. There was no pot of money and I wasn't bowling against WRW, but I did get a nice ring though :)

@@brianforbes9715 Coming from standard urethane balls, the Purple Rhino hit so hard it was amazing. I am unimpressed with newer bowling balls that turn over as soon as they hit the lane and make everyone think they are a cranker.

I like bowling, but it's a bit like croquet. Not really going to fill stadiums watching guys roll bowls into clubs. If it was to become big, it needs to evolve. I suggest human heads poking up, preferably people like Kardasians and other Z list 'celebrities'. Yeah, a full on strike on their face would certainly make me tune in to that channel.

It can be unpredictable which sports can suddenly become fashionable. Ice hockey and speedway were very popular here in #scotland in the 1950's. Bowling was huge here in the 2000's. Lawn bowling is a hugely popular sport here and has been for 100 years, but it's for old people generally. Even though I'm in my 50's, personally I love X game sports like skateboarding.

He made the same "error" I did years ago on the front 8 and moved left to compensate for nerves. Issue for me was acing the target, leaving a 10 pin due to the adjustment. My teammate/coach angrily asked me what I did, then proceeded to ask why. My game wasn't for 130k though, nor a title but, I did end up with a 268.

Not sure if 2-finger, but he used a 15 lb ball. He went to a 16 soon after. In that 300, not a "lucky break" in the bunch; all solidly in the 1-3 pocket.

I got 6 strikes , on my first 6 balls, when I was at college. My usual score is about 130 in total lol. So it was a complete freak occurance. I ended up with about 235. Probably the only time in my life I've been "in the zone". Everything was just so easy/slow motion.

I felt bad for Mr. Davis!! He needed that last shot, and after making quality shots to get to 11 strikes, it was a tiny miss that caused the ball to miss pocket to the right!!! Mr. Davis was fortunate to get by Walter Ray!!!! Walter Ray had a possible 268 and losing out on $110k was tough, but he got the "W" . That was exciting.👍👍

Kudos to him, first time ever on tv, bowling against the greatest, for the title, and $100,000, I was watching this thinking he needed to move a couple boards right or he was going to leave a wrap 10 pin, but he got it in and the ball never recovered, too bad. A simple 2 board adjustment with that same shot in or out looks like a winner

I've had 12 strikes in a row, just not in the same game. I struck in the 1st, then I spared in the 2nd and went on to strike out (280) and then the next 2 in the next game. I'll never bowl a 300 because I am too inconsistent.

Wow. He was definitely light on the first two in the tenth and got a little lucky with the trip-10 both times. The third one was even lighter though and really didn't have a chance. Oh well. Still incredible!!

JaredBail, I beg to differ. it is relatively easy to get 10. The first 10 feel automatic, but the last 2 can easily get into your head. " how many steps do I take? how fast do I throw. For Gods sake don't cross over to Brooklyn etc..." this is why so many end up with 298-299. 2 months ago I bowled my first 300 because I shut out all the eyes on the back of my head and thought of it as the 5th frame. You cant even think of it as the 10th frame.

Yes 300's are nowhere near easy.. They are much easier to get than they use to be with the new equipment being so good, but it is still not easy at all.. And trust me, try bowling on a pro pattern (which no bowling center has on their lanes in league or practice) and tell me how easy it is. The oil patterns they put down in these kind of Tournaments are ridiculously more difficult.

I'm completely with you about not thinking about it as the tenth. Personally, I break my game down into 1/3's and 1/4's depending how I'm feeling, just so I don't think about having the front 8 or 9.

All depends on whether you like performing in the 10th. I have always been the clean up batter. Love the pressure, enjoy performing in the 10th inning.

I hear what you are saying. I was a baseball pitcher from Little League through high school. That experience enables me to put myself in a sort of "Zen state" (for lack of a better word) when performing. Still, for some reason, 99% of people I have seen with all X's choke in the 10th. You wouldn't think so. Bowling is a relatively simple game. (Notice how I don't call it a sport?).

Bowling, the only game where you can knock down about 5/6th of the pins of that of a perfect game, but only get 1/3rd of the score. A 300 game = 120 pins knocked down. A 100 game (9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9/9) = 99 pins knocked down (only 21 pins less than that of a perfect game). What a bad scoring system! Also, why only add the pin count of the first ball after a spare? What if the bowler gets a 3 6 in the frame immediately after a spare? Why count that as a 13? Why not take the larger of the 2 pin counts (such as 3 and 6) and count the spare (in this case) as 16, not 13? Why bias the first shot as more important immediately after a spare? Think about 0/ 0/ 0/ 0/ 0/ 0/ 0/ 0/ 0/ 0/0 = 100 vs. 9/ 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- 9- = 100. 1 mark and 9 opens ties 10 marks? What a crappy scoring system! Also 1/ 1/ 1/ 1/ 1/ 1/ 1/ 1/ 1/ XXX = 120 pins down in 1 game, the same number as a perfect game.

He was on his mark, he just needed to slow his speed down. That's what happens when you are under pressure, you tend to get too fast.

These guys are machines. On the final ball it appeared Davis threw wide intentionally so the ball wouldn't finish high and split. That's the way pros are trained, it's all about pin count. But on the last ball "money" is the priority (or should be) and NOT a perfect game. Either the right lane was a little tight and he gave the ball more space or it was a rookie error. Example: when JIm Stefanich rolled his 300 game in the 1974 Midas Open, he threw the ball as hard and fast as he could straight at the head pin. The ball should've resulted in a 7-10 split but the pins combined perfectly into left and right pits. You could see Stefanich shaking (later he said he just wanted to get it over) but it was a true example of a pro in action.

Patrick Muller I had a buddy that had that red Crush/R. He also had the purple one called Crush/R2 I believe. I had the purple Rhino Pro that was in this video. I shot my first 300 game with that ball.

How can this be 1993? The score ticker show the 49er's vs Texans score. Houston Texans didn't exist before 2002.

I don't believe the statistic shown at 0:50 is correct, because at the 1988 Quaker State, Bob Benoit bowled a 300 in the championship match and it was his first TV appearance.

The Highest game I ever bowled was a 299 and yes, I left the 2 pin on the 12th. What a coincidence!

Look like he lost it a bit in the down swing and almost dropped it, the ball went further to the right and didn't recover. If you watch it a second time the same thing almost happened on his first ball in the 10th.
