In some places pitbulls were knows as the nanny dogs. Big babysitters is all they are. Protective animals but it can be so easy for that protective instinct to turn into danger if these animals aren't handled properly.

I had a 120 pound female that we named Baby. She was such a loving dog. We got her when she was 8 weeks, and I ended up putting her down at 16 years. She was in so much pain from hip displasia, and went into seizures. Even though she was in pain, her tail always thumped the floor when I walked in the door. Still brings tears to my eyes....

Morgan Yarbrough animal cruelty at an early age like that is a strong sign of how they’ll grow up. It’s one thing to learn to be more gentle and another to need to be taught not to innately want to hurt other animals/people. I’d see if you can get someone to take the dog from him. Sounds like it’s not a safe place for it.

@@HaliteHorizons most likely. Dogs can feel the same way about it as humans, which is in a basic strategic safety kind of way: "small X can be aggressive, but their maximum potential for damage is low if they are a threat, ergo there's just less to worry about with smaller X, even if larger X seems friendly enough." This is why (especially for adult males) when approaching new dogs body language is very important. Kneel down to look smaller, turn palms up in a nonthreatening way, no sudden movements, etc. Size can be intimidating just for its own sake and no other reason, so it is important to establish trust that even if you could hurt the dog you never would. In my experience with dogs, I have heard of those with, "male fear" but they don't show fear if you show them these things, and I conclude that the cause is actually "size fear;" if a large woman approached them without considering these aspects the dog would still show fear, but not for a male who recognizes this.

@@iangoldsworthy2056 funny story there's actually a St.B nearby me. I was out walking my little 40 lb McNab/Border Collie mix Zoot when we ran into each other. Zoot was terribly intimidated by the St.B, raised up her hackles, tried to puff herself up, while the St.B was not intimidated whatsoever he did really want to play and proceeded to try and follow all the rules I listed about trying to look small and non-threatening. Every time Zoot growled he just tried harder. Unfortunately she just wouldn't get over his size and relax, so I moved along. I just thought it was so funny to see the massive dog try his hardest to look small, while the small dog tried her hardest to look big. That was actually my first IRL encounter with a St.B, he was so patient and engaging with Zoot, it's a shame she wouldn't warm up to him, he really seemed like a Saint of a dog.

@@Willyk200921 he lived a pretty normal life till about 12 from memory. I have heard of issues like what you describe which I also believe can happen more often through bad breeding (inbreeding, etc.). Not sure if this was the case with you neighbor's dogs or not. I'll be getting another Bernard (or two) in the near future for sure. Hopefully won't have those issues, but they are such great dogs I can't resist. Yeah that made zero sense and is typical Dodo nonsense. At the beginning they said a breeder surrendered him and based on how well-kept and generally well-bred he looked, I doubt this dog had much hardships in his life. And he's 100% comfortable in the home and with the kids. It's nice they adopted him but I hate the implied sob stories.

yeah dodo and adoption centres make up crap sob stories to get the dog adopted out quicker when usually a lot of the dogs aren’t abused etc

@Chaos Undivided I agree. Once people learn that being angry over the internet is literally just you being angry at other people who have no idea you exsist and it wastes too much of our precious time here on the big blue rock, life becomes a lot simpler in the best way. Smiling and crying at Dodo videos is truly ascension into the fluffiest dimension ever 🧘‍♀️🤞👌🐕

Foster parents are awesome, they give so much love, when it's needed the most. When the dogs are adopted we sometimes forget how much the foster parents have given and how it must hurt to give the dogs up . God bless them all.

I walking in Manhattan one rainy day about 10 years ago. Outside a Banana Republic was a St. Bernard sitting placidly waiting for its owner. I walked up to pet him and he just stood on his hind legs and put both front paws over my shoulders, like, "Hug?"After petting him a for a couple minutes, I walked away and realized I was COVERED inhair! Small price to pay.
