one of my favorite things about naval engines like this is how slow the combustion is. Some real life ones are so large you can walk on the cylinder heads, so sticking a camera with a recessed quartz viewport in a cylinder head is actually somewhat of an effective solution to visual inspection, but good golly its not an explosion in there, its a very intense and admittedly quite rapid burn of some xtra thick fuel oil spray!
@TestECull2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Detonation will destroy any engine but one that large it'd be like a fuel/air bomb going off. You do NOT want one to ping!
@alouisschafer72122 жыл бұрын
@@TestECull dude wtf its a Diesel... There is no such thing as ping or knock in a diesel engine.
@TestECull2 жыл бұрын
@@alouisschafer7212 All pinging/ignition knocking is is combustion not taking place smoothly. Detonation is the most accurate term. You can have detonation in a diesel engine. Part of why ether is so bad for them. It doesn't burn very smoothly at all, it just explodes in there.
@alouisschafer72122 жыл бұрын
@@TestECull you cant really control that in a Diesel... Fuel is Injected at the right moment and it it goes kaboom thats it. Cetane Rating of the Fuel factors into how a Diesel runs but what is the Cetane rating of heavy fuel oil? 10...20? On Road Diesel is atleast 50 I think
@TestECull2 жыл бұрын
@@alouisschafer7212 It still happens and it can still fuck the engine up. Most diesels are designed in such a way as to encourage a smooth burn as much as possible; absolute best case scenario the knocking just makse a lot of clatter and loss of power as you hear in some IDI engines. Examples of this can be found in 84-96 F250, F350 diesel, and anythign based on that platform as the engines International supplied Ford were HORRIBLE about diesel knock and sounded like a bag of hammers falling down a steel staircase when everything was working perfectly. The 6.9 and 7.3 IDIs were so noisy that you can be forgiven for not hearing rod or crank knocking in them over the totally normal ignition knocking! I will give credit; those engines seem to last forever knocking like that. But all that clatter is just power lost to noise. Also why ether is such a bad idea. It detonates, rather than burns, no matter what you do in there. It is known to blow intake manifolds clean off when an intake heater is used as a cold start aid(And sometimes glow plugs, too, if it ignites with an intake valve still open). It is known to crack pistons, break rings, damage valves, cause all sorts of hell because that stuff just does not know how to burn smoothly in a diesel engine. Generally, if you're having to reach for the ether to get it started, it's either A: plumb wore the fuck out or B: you need to fix whatever cold start aid it has already and isn't working.

Massive crank, Itty-bitty bore I LOVE IT
@5thearth2 жыл бұрын
Not so much just the crank, but also really long conrods, which improves torque.
@kimpatz2189 Жыл бұрын
The bore is so narrow that it must use a crosshead conrod and not a trunk conrod. If its the latter, it would just slam itself to the cylinder wall. The crosshead would also eliminate uneven force on the cylinder wall as the conrod is maintained in a parallel direction to the force. And in a crosshead conrod, you can split the chambers and not have any blowby by simply connecting the piston in another chamber to the crosshead to the other chamber. This setup is used on a two stroke cycle uniflow scavange large diesel engine. The back of the piston would pressurize the air when it is going down until it reaches the ports and sends it to the top of the piston. When the piston goes up for the compression, the back of the piston creates a vacuum, assisting the blow for charging air. The crankcase is unaffected and can have a close loop lubrication as only the rod connects the piston and crosshead together.

Starter motor
@NBSV12 жыл бұрын
Some of the big engines use air blown into a cylinder as the starter. You have a small electric motor, or manual crank, that puts the engine in position so it turns the right way. By the same idea some of them reverse the engine rotation to reverse the ship. That’s why it can take a while to change direction. You have to bring the engine to a stop, then position it, then start it again in reverse.
