karen. Lovely to hear from you again, I still follow your results with interest. It took bottle to up roots, move to America, adapt the snooker skills we worked on together to become a successful pool player and I have nothing but admiration for all of that. I would love to see you back in England giving a boost to ladies snooker not to mention the debates we both enjoyed. I wish you well over the pond in the hope that Vera Lynn's words come true one day. " We'll meet again."

Very well said, Barry. The power of ladies’ pool in the States is evident, with a true depth of talent. I find it baffling that a sport in which the usual natural genetic male physical advantages are largely moot, an equally well-organised, depth and breadth of talent and competition in ladies’ snooker has failed to emerge. Oh and btw, Barry, you’re an outstanding ambassador for the game, and I, for one, and many others feel grateful and blessed to have access to free instructionals. I’m not much of a player (and poor health - physical disability - precludes future direct enjoyment) but as an avid viewer of the big tournaments, it was refreshing to learn a few subtleties from your rule explanation content - you really cover all the nuances. Many many thanks. J.

Cool. If you can leave a slight angle on any ball it allows the cue ball to be controlled in most instances with screw and stun, mastering these two shots are vital, Notice that I said slight angles, it gives a wide range of possibilities.

Barry, I'm a big snooker fan , watch all the top events on TV, just started playing snooker again after many years needless to say I'm hopeless at potting balls at the age of 71 do you think I'm too old to learn? I've been following your vids and find them very helpful. The guy I'm playing with is a bit younger at 66 but slightly better than me but we both enjoy playing.
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach5 жыл бұрын
48firefox. Obviously it gets harder to learn new skills as you get older but not impossible, it really depends on how bad you want it. In terms of snooker I find that people lose a little flexibility and struggle to get into the proper position, flexibility around the shoulder girdle, neck and upper back tends to get lost due to our sedentary life style or the employment we had over the years and this can be worked on without too much effort providing you get the right guidance. I am 76, suffer from spondylosis and generally quite stiff, to maintain any resemblance of ability I perform stretching exercises daily. More enjoyment comes with improvement and doing the right things consistently aids these concepts.
@vokerjames45365 жыл бұрын
Hi Sir Barry, i loved all your videos, may i know how i can pot a ball with great amount of top spin? Is it the same way when im doing a screwback? My problem is that i have no problem playing screwback that requires lots of cue power but when it comes to top spin, i cant generate that much of power. Are the 3 aspects full back swing, relax and follow through apply on top spin shot as well? Thank you :)
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach5 жыл бұрын
Voker. The main reasons that players don't screw back or generate top spin etc is that they do not follow through or feel the ball enough and that they do not hit the ball where they intend or think they are hitting it. As Ronnie O'Sullivan says in some of his brief tutorials, you must attack the ball, he is spot on. The three aspects you mention certainly apply to top spin so go for it, just make sure you raise the bridge and hit the ball high enough, good luck.

Hi Barry, Love your videos. Ive been told my cue action is quite jerky and too fast, do you have any tips to slow my action down and make it more consistent please? regards Dwayne
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach3 жыл бұрын
Dwayne. Lengthening the cue action a little will usually have the benefit of slowing the action down, so that is one thing that you may consider. Secondly, I like a player to establish a nice rhythm in his head, if you voice (to yourself) the numbers 1-2-3 as you feather that can establish one sort of rhythm but then add the word AND so it becomes 1and 2 and 3, the rhythm becomes totally different. Lastly you may or may not have a pause in your action, if not you may like to consider using one, most top players do have one. It takes a little while to get used to any changes so you will have to be patient and not dismiss them without giving them a fair trial.

hi,,Barry, the video is pretty helpful to set up my own practice routine, my question is when during the T practice, if you miss a shoot, what do you always do?? just re-place the cueball and object ball and do that shot again?? or throw the object ball into the pocket and keep going to do the practice where the cueball are, and make the next shooting?? I always miss the shots when I just start to practice like this, looking forward for your response, thanks
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach3 жыл бұрын
yuan. There is no set way to practise the routine, some players will set the shot up again, others will just continue, it all depends upon the players ability and his expectations. For a good player the "T" is quite a simple practise and he would be annoyed to miss a shot or indeed to lose position. The good player might also set conditions on the practise like he must take a black with each red or that he must take red and black then red and pink etc. The real object is to learn and test yourself, however the individual does that is fine. Good luck.

hi barry found out my problem after a very long time i had backdisk for 10 years now, 5 years ago i had the surgery. in the meantime i started snooker too. until now i have seen many good coaches until today. recently most the coaches told me that they cant see any problem as i kept visiting them that theres is something wrong. recently found out that the backdisk had cause me to turn my heap to the left and all my body weight were towards left leg, therefor the cue butt was towards my body when i put 2 chalks to check the alignment. and thats why the tip was towards right side of cue ball and thats y i was putting unintentional right hand side. although when the coaches checked my alignment, they said its fine bcaz the butt was sometimes towards my body (im right handed player) and only one coach told me i had alignment problem but later even him said you have fixed it. now that i have found out that its the alignment problem how do i fix this? i did try to put my right leg straight, and right heap turned towards right body and this fixes the alignment problem, but since i have bad back disk it hurt alot. any suggestion? thank you
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach5 жыл бұрын
ART. I hate to be negative but it would be unprofessional of me to offer advise on how to stop your back hurting because of your operation. What I can say is that alignment is normally more to do with the relationship between the eyes and the brain, the stance can certainly be used to assist in this but is seldom the guiding factor. I suggest that you examine whether you are using the dominant eye correctly bearing in mind that any alteration will take a little time to become accustomed to it.
@theznooker5 жыл бұрын
i changed my stance by moving my stance abit to the right, this way i am more online but its inconsistent. however i also tried to put the cue under my right eye which is dominant and it also brings it online, however even this method isnt consistent aswell because the cue chest point sometimes stays where it used to be which means the butt of the cue stays where im used to it and its offline. maybe it takes time for the butt of the cue to be inline. although sometimes the chest contact point also changes to the right which makes the butt online. not sure either to use the stance or under right chin to fix this issue? tnx

i have a question about the cue is that since I'm comfortable playing pool with the pool cue, can I use a pool cue to play in a snooker game ?
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach3 жыл бұрын
Minh. There is nothing to prevent you using a pool cue in a game of snooker. However, please don't forget that a pool cue tends to be significantly thicker than a snooker cue and that the snooker balls are also very much smaller. This will result in reducing the variety of shots that you can play.

notice you hit centre ball a lot ...i cue all over the white and use fraction left and right of centre cue ball for helping side as i find it hard to hit center consistantly...also enjoy being flamboyant (showing off on the odd shot or two) Q Am I doing it wrong - I dont play on match table fast cloths and steel block tables hardly ever i feel i need to ping it around more and the ball does not throw as much as it does on the finer cloths so you can get away with it and the titanium ferrle I have does not throw so i find I can use more side now and hit where I aim
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach Жыл бұрын
Byrom. I will never tell a player not to use side but I will certainly tell a player to use it sparingly and only when necessary. Showing off can certainly boost confidence but will let you down against better players and if you do progress to the finer cloths of the Star tables you see on TV, both will let you down.

Hey coach , How u holdin up? There is an issue that bothers me everytime I get myself into a competition You see , In my practice day I have 50-70 breaks several times But when I find myself in an audience playing against someone even not stronger than me , I even miss easy shots sometimes For the record , I have developed my own technique and pre-shot routine and It has worked for me so far It is like I have 2 pauses which are at the cue ball and at the end of my back swing before going through the cue ball Any tips for me?:)
@BarryStarkSnookerCoach5 жыл бұрын
arman. A few pros use the double pause method that you describe so no problem with that. However, lots of players have trouble in taking their practise game to the match table, they get nervous due to many causes, fear of missing, fear of losing, being embarrassed at missing or losing to someone they should beat. They way to conquer this is through visualisation, diaphragmatic breathing and concentrating on one shot at a time. Visualisation will allow you to experience the event before it happens but don't think you can just turn it on when it is needed it needs practise and lots of it. Diaphragmatic breathing will get more oxygen into your system, help to exhale spent gases, (carbon dioxide) slow the heart rate down and help you to relax. Concentrating on one shot at a time will help you to stop getting ahead of yourself which can cause movement. Decide the shot you are going to play, where you are going to strike the cue ball and the rest will look after itself.

Hk. No argument there just a matter of personal preference, in any case I could use the practise with the rest.

I would love to see someone actually missing a shot once or twice in such routine. What is the sequence then? Replace the balls where they were (to the best of memory) and repeat until made? Or replace the missed ball but leave the cue ball where it ended? Also, what happens if one canons a ball while potting another? Thanks for great videos!

Replace the cue ball and object ball where they were as best as possible. It is possible it was a one off miss. However, if you are consistently missing this certain angle you potentially have a 'bad' angle. You should repeat this shot at this angle several times to retrain your brain

dainiusmar. The way to learn is first of all just pause a little and think, have I missed because of bad aim, movement, tension, bad cueing etc. Then set the balls up again and practise, practise, practise until you get it right. Put yourself on video, its amazing the amount of things you can spot that you never thought you did.

Theo. Very interesting, I have often noticed how often the number 147 crops up on car number plates.

One day when I get rich I will have a snooker table set up at my house and decline all social life.

Giggity. I can just about afford a snooker table, what I cannot afford is the house big enough to put one in, one day maybe when my lottery numbers come up.
