Ice Out Top Water Lake Trout From Shore!!

Ice is FINALLY starting to melt in the way up north! I snuck away for a quick rip to open up my 2021 open water season! Ended up getting a handful of nice lake trout on top water and subsurface baits!! Soon we'll be getting the boat wet!!!

That’s actually a good technique some people use in Colorado when the ice comes off and I am 100% with you when you say it’s the most fun way to catch lake trout!

MY SON AND I SLAMMED LAKE TROUT IN 6-8 FEET OF WATER IN THE BOUNDARY WATERS IN NORTHERN MINNESOTA RIGHT AFTER ICE OUT. I NEVER THOUGHT TO TRY TOP WATERS. I LIKE HOW YOU DROPPED YOUR PLIERS ( ON PURPOSE ) TO ADD THE PAUSE. GREAT FUN.

Ohhh I guarentee they'd dart up 6-8' to crush off the surface, especially considering they'll cruise up 20+ feet to hit a tube in the dead of winter!

Ive had a bunch of boils and slashes in northern mn on topwaters but have yet to get one to hit the hooks right. Of course the first couple times i pick up a long rod for the year im strung tighter than a snare drum so its most likely im ripping it away from them too soon. Exciting nonetheless

I dont think there is anywhere north of that where people work. But like you I can leave work and have spectacular fishing close to home. Cheers and tight lines up there. Love your content!

I guess right before the spawn they are in really shallow and smashing baits but this is like a 2 week window. Spring is when they are LOCO

I went to a spot near ardbeg if u somehow know where that is. It’s like 2.5 hours from Toronto. Caught a laker from shore fishing a jerk prolly like 5 feet under the water so top water prolly would have worked. That was this March. Deepest part of the lake is 120 feet. I was prolly fishing like 30-40 if I had to guess
