My first impressions of my brand new Grizzly G0766 wood lathe. I hope you enjoy! I was wrong about one thing in this video. The tool rest banjo will accept a 1 inch post. This was a recent change to the tool rest banjo. Sorry for the confusion.

Have the 766. Have had it for a while. I like it and it’s done well. Our club bought 6. We drilled out the banjo for 1” rests. My quill was stiff and finally jammed up. I had to remove it and ream the hole and sand the quill rod. It now, moves nice and slick. You’ll find it has an electronic whine. We changed a parameter and quieted it right down. Robust made us some rests that have the correct stem height.

I have had my g0766 for about 2 1/2 years. Had to replace the speed pot a few times, Grizzly finally improved the quality and the last replacements has been going strong for over a year. One thing I wish Grizzly would come out with is an extension for it, turning long stair spindles and posts.

Hi Stephen, nice to see you back. I bought my G0766 last year and was also disappointed to find the banjo to be 25mm. Some folks drill out the banjo but then the rest that comes with the unit fits sloppy. What I've done is to grind the tool rest down post(s) on the bench grinder. Takes a few minutes but I've had good results, both modifying existing and making some new ones to suit the larger capacity. Love the speed control the VFD provides, I expect you'll be thrilled. Thanks for sharing!

Stephen, I just got the same lathe about a month ago and love it. If you check I think you will find the tool rest post size was changed by Grizzly and is now 1" mine is and Nova makes some nice 1" modular tool rests that are 8" long and work great on this lathe. Most other tool rests are to short due to the design of the banjo. I started turning with the same Grizzly lathe you just replace the improvement is amazing that 600 RPM min was a big problem for me too.

So happy for you and glad you're back. I also have a new lathe coming tomorrow 8/9/18. I wound up with a Nova Galaxi 16/44. Almost had a Grizzly but the new tariffs ($500) added too much for my budget. I have ordered the outboard turning option which allows up to 32 inches and the head rotates 360 degrees. Doubt I'll ever be able to afford a chunk of wood capable of giving me 32 inches. But ya never know.

I have a G0766 also. I used a brake hone in my drill press to increase the size of the hole in my banjo. It may take a little longer than drilling it out but it won't catch and is as smooth as butter.

So glad to see you back Stephen. You were one of the first turners I discovered a couple of years ago and I learned so much from you, gave me a ton of confidence. Loved learning how to turn and make tools. Very happy for you and more than a bit jealous! That thing looks awesome, I would love to be able to turn big bowls but my lathe is cheap and small. I have made some nice tools, someone bought me a Sorby gouge and I entered my first show. Besides thanking you, I wanted to wish you congrats on your new lathe. Stay safe, hope you can video and share your future turnings, I know that can be a pain when all you want to do is go out and turn ....but beleive me, you help many people! One more request.... not sure if you have already done this or not. But I would really benefit from your experience with selling your work, how you do it, how you price it, what kind of shows you go to ....that sort of thing. Do you have a website you sell your work on? I'm disabled, my wife is disabled with MS, I've been really sick for a long time and currently not looking too good. I'n not whining or complaining but looking for a way to capitalize on my work. So, it would be a real blessing if I could sell some bowls and other turnings ....we could use the extra cash, I would really like to be able to upgrade on a lathe and tools ....not sure if its practicle to think that selling woodturnings can provide the cash for that. Thanks again my friend! ....Scott

Good to see you back. I got the same lathe back in March and really like it. The banjo issue seemed to have been fixed by Grizzly as mine measured 1 inch from the factory not the 25mm as they used to be. I added a ballast box with 150lb of sand but I have still had it walk across the floor on a really unbalanced piece. Good man for deleting Facebook! They are scary.

Nice to see you back Stephen. I have owned this same lath G0766 for about 3 years now and LOVE it! You will too. Regarding the hole in your banjo; I took mine over to my drill press and simply bored the hole out with a 1 inch drill bit. It drilled very easy. In fact only took about 30 seconds. Now I can fit all commercial tool rest posts. You can still use your existing rest. It just fits loosely but locks down nice and tight. Again, nice to see you back and look forward to seeing future videos. BTW - I’m a big fan and love your videos. Cheers my friend.

I have this lathe, with the 25mm hole in the banjo. I was upset that Grizzly did not offer a S shaped tool rest. Since you cannot buy 25mm post tool rests, this is a problem. I found a 25mm, 12" long, solid round bar on Ebay and bought it for $20 or so. With that and a welder, you can make more tool rests. I did not consider drilling mine to 1" size.

Hello Stephen, It's good to see you back. It is odd that they went for metric on the banjo. My Axminster (in the UK), is under a year old and is metric on everything but the banjo, which is 1". The earlier comment about drilling out the hole to an inch has mileage, although I wonder if an intial search for a local milling company, or maybe a motor engineering firm that re-skims the inside of engine cylinders, might be worthwhile. The difference in diameter is only just over 0.4 mm for clearance, but that could still require a lot of torque at a fairly slow speed. Anyway, good luck with your new toy, and I Iook forward to your next project. Regards, Glenn. :-)

Stephen, as a G0766 owner I will tell you it's a good machine. The primary weakness I have found is the tool rest is 25mm which means you have very few options for aftermarket tool rests. BUT if you bore the banjo out to 1" you can contact Robust and they will make any of their tool rests to the 8 1/2" height you need for that lathe. Let me tell you, it's worth the boring job to be able to use the Robust rest.

Great to see you again Stephen. That looks like a great new tool; I guess you've been having some good success at the craft shows? With regard to using your old tool-rest with the new banjo, as long as the post is long enough (what with the increased height from the bed-ways), any steel-fabrication shop should be able to turn that down pretty quickly for you. Shouldn't be more than half an hour or so, I'd think. All the best.

I believe that your lathe uses a 1" hole on the banjo. The newer ones do use 1" post on the tool rest. Mine has the 25mm so I had to have a couple of new tool rest built. I found that the 14" rest was just to big at times. Enjoy your new lathe!!!

PS , drill press 1” drill, makes a “ hole in the banjo if you have many tool rests might be cheapest option. The fit is not critical like boring an engine cylinder, a screw wedges it tight. I know it is shinny new!!! Keep up the great videos.
