The extended chords with note omissions are often referred to as shell voicings.

13th is octave of 6th, right? And all 13th in this video are major 13th? Is that a right summary? Meaning that Xmin13 is based on Harmonic or Melodic minor, not natural minor? Is that correct?
@WriteASong Жыл бұрын
Yes 13th is an octave of 6th. The video features major 13th, minor 13th and dominant 13th chords. The notes in the minor13th can be thought of as from the dorian mode. For example : Cmin13 has the notes C Eb G Bb D F and A The c dorian mode has the notes : C D Eb F G A Bb

Why does a Cm13 chord use A instead of A♭?
@WriteASong11 ай бұрын
A♭ would be a ♭13 note not a 13.

@@WriteASong but isn't the 13th scale degree of a C minor scale an A♭? So would it not be C E♭ G B♭ D F A♭ ?
@WriteASong11 ай бұрын
Yes, but for the Minor 13th chord you use the major 13th scale degree.

convention, but also avoids heavy dissonance between the 5 and ♭13

is there such thing as an "add13th?"
@WriteASong Жыл бұрын
An add 13th is the same as a 6th chord. For example a major add 13th 1 -3 - 5 - 13 functions the same as 1 - 3 - 5 - 6. This is a major 6th chord. I made a video about it here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3fFY3Ruga58p7s Hope that helps!

I never understood why they needed so many notes. A 13th chord should only need the 1-3-5-13.
@cutronixxx Жыл бұрын
It doesn’t even need a 5th, but the 7th is important for recognizing it as dominant when it’s a C13.
@hardlyworking_ Жыл бұрын
wouldn't that be a Cmaj-add13 though? pretty sure the chunkiness of the original chord is the point, and probably why it isn't used very often

Looking at C major, the 1-3-5-13 would be C-E-G-A, which can be interpretted as an Am7 with a C in the bass.

Very unusual for 13th to include 3 5 7 9 11 13.

Why the hell do you need such a chord with all those xtension ... root position shucks
