Be careful with your comparative percentages. If MP does a task in 50s and MM does it in 125s, then MP is 2.5X faster than MM. But that's not the same as 250% faster. It is 150% faster. If something is 100% faster, then it is double the speed. So 150% faster is double the speed, plus another 50% of the base (slower) speed.

An increase of 100% in a quantity means that the final amount is 200% of the initial amount (100% of initial + 100% of increase = 200% of initial). In other words, the quantity has doubled. so you are right

You need to also be sure that the % is based on the original variable, and there’s a technicality in your comment as well. If MP is 50s and MM is 125s, then you can say it took MM 2.5x longer, therefore it’s 1.5x slower compared to MP. If talking about one of them being faster, you’d say the MP finished in 40% of the time, therefore it’s 60% faster compared to MM.

Parker, I wish you’d tested with Final Cut Pro as well. Using Premiere in emulation doesn’t tell us much. Bad software running in emulation will of course be less than stellar. Everything you claim to be laggy on the M1 using Premiere would be vastly improved, or maybe completely fixed, if you were using FCP. My M1 MacBook Pro absolutely crushes 4k and 8k video from my Canon R5 in FCP, blowing the doors off my fully loaded 16” MBP with Intel inside.

When comparing the Mini to the iMac, its not just the monitor that needs to be accounted for in the $700 price difference. Include keyboard, mouse, camera, speakers, and microphone. Yes, you could source these for less than $700.
@80-80.
@80-80. 3 жыл бұрын
If you are into video editing you need proper stutio monitors anyway, the built-in speakers in the iMac is usless for any creaive work. Use the microphone on your headset for video calls, or your shootgun mic. Everyone has a mouse. On top of that you still need a dock, card reader and stuff for your iMac. The iMac only makes sense for content consumers, not for content creators.
@mrwhopee
@mrwhopee 3 жыл бұрын
LOL no professional’s going to use the built in speakers on the iMac for mixing, nor will they care about the built in camera and microphone. and you can get a far nicer, larger, more colour accurate panel to work on which you can upgrade in the future, the whereas iMac you’re stuck with whatever Apple gives you and have to buy a whole new system. The mini has 10gig Ethernet option as well. Yeah you can use an external monitor with iMac but it won’t be a very clean looking setup (even a 2nd 24inch panel won’t match) and not everyone has room for 2 panels.

I TOTALLY Agree with your suggestion to get the upgraded RAM. I edit everything on the new M1 Macbook Air. Granted, I am only working with Canon M50 footage, and some iphone 12 pro footage as well. It's PERFECT for newer creators on a lower budget who want a laptop that's portable but can still do some creative work. But I didn't upgrade my RAM and I very much regret it. If I'm exporting a project for KZbin, I can't work in photoshop without seriously lagging or increasing render time. But the render is still very fast for the price. But all that to say: upgrade your RAM from the 8GB

It's just easier especially when you're with a team that also uses Adobe. It's another one of those ecosystem things. Sending files through Premiere, After Effects, Audition is pretty seamless. Editing photos from Lightroom to PS for thumbnails is great too. I'm not sure if Apple has a whole suite of software that just seamlessly works like that, never used FCP or any Apple software before. Cross platform compatibility is also important sometimes. Not everyone can run FCP projects, but everyone can open Adobe regardless of the OS. Question for Davinci users, why must BM be so annoying? I can't believe I actually have to buy copies of Resolve from physical stores. It's 2021. Is there really no online purchase available?

The only example I know of where the Mac Pro shines is in multiple Avid PCI cards used with Pro Tools Audio. Doing 6K or 12K video is still more economical using a WinPC. The big Mac Pro can deliver and edit the next project at the same time with ease. The Mini slows down, so much so, that scrubbing and editing is full of latency.

This is a nice video. I literally have the Exact same MacPro spec'd computer, and a 16GB M1 Mac mini. I don't use Premier Pro because well....... I like more modern NLE's. Anyways, The M1 smokes the MacPro in Resolve and FCPX with Canon R5 10 bit 422 footage. It is super smooth with that codec compared to the MacPro. In Final Cut, the MacPro actually handles the R5 10 bit 422 footage quite well. But its not as smooth as the M1 Mini. For everything else, including BMPCC 6k Raw, and Canon C70 footage, and any other 8 bit, or 10 bit 420 footage the MacPro is faster, by about 30 percent typically. BMPCC 6k Raw in Resolve on the MacPro is just smooth period. It struggles a bit on the M1. Where you REALLY notice the MacPro's power is when adding effects, or using Noise Reduction. Noise Reduction especially, is monumentally better in FCPX or Resolve with the MacPro. Fusion effects in Resolve are much zippier and faster on the MacPro as well. Bottom line, if I have a simple 10bit 422 edit, I use the M1. For everything else, the MacPro is faster, smoother and handles effects and color grade layers much better. It also renders quite a bit faster in almost all scenarios. But it also costs about 10X as much. The M1 truly is an amazing deal.

Try the beta version of Premiere on your M1 Macs. It runs very smooth on my little 13in M1 Macbook Pro with only 8GB of ram. And I was also editing Canon R5 footage without running proxies, which I almost always have to do no matter which Mac machine I edit on. People who complain about Premiere Pro all the time seriously must not know how to use it. Final Cut works and feels like the most amateur program. I can't stand trying to do things to finalize/polish a project that I can in Premiere in a matter of minutes. Final Cut is only good for slicing up footage, basic sound design, and basic effects. When it comes to any text or animation (which I do a lot for my corporate clients), it literally can't keep up with Premiere.

All these quirks will be gone once Adobe Releases the ARM version of premiere. Final Cut already destroys the crappy optimization of premiere on both Intel and ARM and with optimizations the M1 will be really similar to the performance of the Pro for a fraction of the price.

Parker Walberg why would one put a radio mic in the shot when you can hide the mic out of shot when using a Senheiser. Just use a shotgun ?? Also just worth mentioning the C70 is not much of a camera to review codec wise. Why not just review this machine while working with 8K footage shot on a Red or use 400 Mbit footage shot on a Panasonic or Sony. That will make more sense. But a C70..... Canon makes bad codecs, so using a Canon for the review makes it a bit skewered to start with

I love the M1 Mac, however, these machines are purpose built for video editing. The CPU has special hardware that makes these tasks ultra fast. As a general use computer, it makes an amazing laptop, due to it's power consumption. As a small form factor desktop, you can get smaller, more performant, windows machines, if video editing is not part of your workflow.

I use the M1 mac mini with 8gb of ram and it runs great in DaVinci Resolve. Premiere pro works fine unless you use h.265 HEVC files. It just won't play them, while resolve plays everything smoothly. It's obviously optimisation issues and I hope it will be better with new updates, as a lot of people use Adobe software.

I'd love to see how these machines work with prores HQ and prores raw files in fcpx, that would be a far more realistic challenge as people don't usually buy apple products to run Adobe software. That's like buying a petrol car and running it on diesel. And people who shoot 8k footage professionaly are far more likely to have the budget for a mac studio machine.
