My sentiments exactly. I have a Samsung 4K monitor, it was cheap at the time, for my 2012 mac mini, and whilst it's OK for what it is, there is no comparison to the 5K screen on my 2014 27" iMac. But I could definitely go for an M1 16Gb Mac Mini as a secondary machine, and then wait to replace my iMac. I suspect that will be a 30" screen, and better all round performance than my current iMac. Hope you get what you want!

It's a shame Apple designing their own silicon like this didn't drive the price down to a friendlier level, or at least curtail their penchant for vastly overcharging for memory and SSD upgrades. Can't argue with the performance figures though. That said, inclined to wait for "M2" variants, as don't immediately need something new, and would hate to have laid out over a £1000 for something now when I can afford to see how the hardware matures. At least it's saved me money by shelving the Ryzen 5000 series Hackintosh I was going to build. Will put a little of that money into beefing up my 2009 Mac Pro instead for now.

It is my humble suggestion/ request to all tech-reviewers doing all these benchmarks. Please cover the following questions in a simple manner, For ordinary user 1) When you plug in the old USB-peripherals like HP printer-cum-scanner models which were manufactured some 5 years ago and do not have the latest drivers at present but working fine otherwise with the windows computers, Does such devices function properly with this new macs? 2) When you plug in 21" monitors with 1080p and 1440p resolutions with VGA/Displayport inputs dongle/converters Into this machine- Does it work properly or does it give some blurry fonts effect? Because Everyone does not have the money or space to buy latest gigantic 4K monitor. 3) if the 8GB RAM is shared between CPU-GPU, how fast/better is it for Ordinary work compared to the Intel graphics-chip in laptops in dual-monitor setup- Because even though in real life often laptops struggles to work in dual monitor setup when using Google Chrome browser with online meeting/webcam-mic on? Or does every person really need to upgrade to 16GB to Get those very fast results shown /claimed by the company and reviewers? 4) Compared to HP/Dell/Lenovo laptops with SSD in similar price point- Whether this thing is faster or slower or same speed- For ordinary things like Microsoft office and web browsing? 5) Does it smoothly work with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel? 6) While using zoom online meeting, and google 'meet'- How smooth/noiseless/glitch-free it is? How noise-free is the microphone? Because, "it can edit/export the 4K videos in Final Cut Pro in very fast manner" = is not really the matter of life and death for most of the computer users across the world in general and India in particular.

I don't own it, but I have watched many reviews of it. From my research, it is the fastest machine in it's price range regarding normal use. The system is radiculously snapy, you can switch between apps with no delay. I can probably answer a few of your questions: 3) For normal user 16GB will be useless. The guy in the video is doing some really intensive work using 8GB, so web browsing and Office won't need the additional RAM. 5) Even my older Intel Mac works perfectly with it. This one will not be any different (saw some videos of it too). 6) It is a desktop computer, so it doesn't have a built in mic. You would need to use an additional one. I hope I've helped at least a bit :)

I have to see a real test. Throwing 5 minutes of footage on a timeline is nothing. When you have hundreds of clips, effects, compound clips, etc. ram is essential. There’s no architecture around that. Sure, 8 gb in silicon may be better than 8 gb in intel, but it will be nowhere near 16 or 32, and even that can be tight depending on projects.

@@markasplinhq No need to go so far. Most semi pro editors will eventually run into 10, 15, 20 minute projects. Those will need vastly more information in ram at once. It's normal to get a project with hundreds of files even at an amateur level. Testing a 5 minute export with a couple cuts is not the same thing at all. The performance looks outstanding, I can't wait to get one. But it would be nice to see higher ram options. It's also a matter of bottleneck - the cpu is way too good for the amount of ram it has, it's not balanced. The gpu is also nothing special, but it's enough for most video editing, given the cpu.

Some pretty wild stuff man and it's crazy because in an interview done by The Tech Chap with 2 Apple employees, they said they're a product company not a chip manufacturing company and that's saying. To get the maximum performance from less wattage it's just mind boggling. And this is just the first generation of chips, Apple's all about evolution over revolution. I saw 3 Windows 10 concepts and was super salty because of how good it looks and as a die hard Windows user I'm tempted greatly to switch seeing as I've had experience with a Unibody MacBook Air from 2010

Hello . Bought my M1 8GB 512GB MODEL. normally I use consistently 16 GB of memory with my Mac’s for intel CPU. SO MY Applications run smoothly with 4 cores i7 processor. But from time to time it lags. Especially when I open Handbreak to convert my videos and the same time watching movies with intel my movies as I convert other movies with handbreak. … the movie that I’m watching keeps on stopping but with M1 chip nothing like that. It runs very fast and smoothly . And also when I start my M1 Macmini, I didn’t see any Apple logo and progress bar just swoosh I’m in my log in information…. Really the M1 chip as you use it, you can see the difference from intel CPU’s and I’m impressed with the unified memory imagine I only had 8GB memory but it runs like 24 GB of memory . Not to mention that it has 8 cores CPU & 8 cores off GPU, and regarding stressing the Macmini M1, I convert all 25 videos (movies) that I owned, that needs audio conversion, continuously, but I never heard the fan …. Really it’s dead quiet, imagine I was converting my movies overnight but you can feel the heat on the chassis that’s why I open up my fan to cool it up somehow overnight. The cores are used almost a 100% and heat is around 86%. And. With it running the conversion…. I watch movies, on KZbin, typing opening my social media in a very very smooth way. It’s really revolutionary the M1 …. Smoother faster and cheaper. Though honestly , I’m skeptical in buying it before as I always be confident with 16 gb memory and 512GB to 1 Tb SSD is my choice. And quad core i5’s or i7’s intel. So I took the risk, thinking that I downgraded my memory would it be he same performance as my quad core 16 gb 512 SSD model , but you know what…. It surpasses that, that’s why my purchase is superb I am say that this is much better than my quad core i7 intel 16gb 512 SSD model … better better and smoother. At the most of my tests, application wise,…… until 4 simultaneous work load continuous usage M1 can handle it. Who knows maybe more than that it depends on the apps that you use.

So, I would never go Apple in the past. I am not a fan of the "ecosystem" or the restrictions. I am a Linux user who resorts to windows only on the work laptop. The price to performance ratio on previous MacBooks was poor. This generation, I feel compelled! By next-gen, with better app compatibility, the MacBook by is going to be a no-brainer. But I am still very apprehensive about entering the ecosystem and spending extra for my peripherals and lack of ports and the general apple issues that happen when apple tries to be extra. If Apple dropped a ThinkPad style MacBook with a great keyboard, and great IO, I'd upgrade today! Maybe use a Linux VM for programming and development and I'll be gooood! So good!

I bought the base model M1 MacBook Air and I couldn't be happier. It's darn near perfect, the only thing I'm wishing for is a microSD slot. I added a magnetic adapter to connect all of the I/O to it. Now I'm thinking about one of these base model Mac minis. With all of it's I/O you could put a low profile USB A card reader with microSD card to extend your storage capability at a decent price. I could have a very portable computer and HTPC all rolled into one...

I think the thing to point out is that it's using the GPU to accelerate rendering the timeline as you're scrubbing through it. The 8% usage is because the CPU isn't doing the same thing it's doing on your windows computer. It's still great performance but it's a little misleading to show only that tiny amount of CPU usage when the CPU isn't doing the heavy lifting here. Can you do the same tests but use something else that can also monitor GPU (and maybe even the ML cores if apple lets software monitor them) usage so we can get the full picture? Regardless of what happening behind the scenes this is still fantastic performance so in the end it doesn't matter too much. Still stoked about an ARM future and what Apple's starting in the whole computer industry!

I've heard some developers being concerned about the lack of some.. developer stuff, I suppose. One of the things mentioned was Homebrew, whatever that is. Yeah, you could try to get it, but in general, a first-generation product is usually the best generation to skip, too. Those seem like really powerful machines, though with the intensity of today's changes it's a bit too much to predict what will last 5 years and what will not.

Just starting out in your video, but gotta make a correction: FCP's background render does not generate "optimized media" in the background- it renders any timeline effects, transforms (resizing), filters, etc., that you've applied. So, yes, the ProRes media it creates w/ all of the effects "baked in" is easier to play back than rendering on the fly, but it's not the same as generating optimized (or proxy) media.
