PERFECT!! Thank you! Everywhere explanations about classifications etc...but no one explaining WHY it happens.

Nice explanation. Only thing I'd add is that the corrective saccade is not merely because the VOR has turned the eye to end of eye orbit. You can think of it as the rapid rising of the head when you are falling asleep, "nodding off" while sitting. The pathologic part is the slow part where your head is drifting down, and the corrective part is the fast rising movement.

May I ask sth? I've got confused over this. so why body starts vor when it thinks it is just sth that must be "corrected" when happens?
@PeterJohns21 күн бұрын
@@meq8830 I believe you're asking what the purpose of the VOR is. Without it, we would not be able to have stable vision while moving our head. It's our brain's image stabilization software if you will.

Thank you for the well defined explanation regarding nystagmus. I would like to ask regarding caloric testing, in which warm or cold water is inserted through the ear canal. I agree that when warm water is placed on the right ear, it will cause a counterclockwise movement of the right endolymph in the horizontal semi-circular canal. This will then activate the hair cells through the kinocillium and give impulses as if the head moves to the right. Hence, a VOR to the left direction will be produced which means that nystagmus should be on the contralateral side or to the left instead of the ipsilateral side. The same goes for insertion of cold water to the right ear canal, which should be ipsilateral. Hence, the mnemonic produced is: cold same - warm opposite. This is my insight regarding nystagmus, kindly correct if there are any wrong concepts or way of thinking that I have just made. I await a reply to this comment very much. Once again, thank you.

No, your explanation has errors. Warm water in right ear -> counterclockwise movement of the right endolymph in the horizontal semi-circular canal which is toward the cupula (ampullopetal which is excitatory for the horizontal canals) -> your brain thinks you are moving to the right -> VOR generates the SLOW phase to the left -> the corrective phase (fast) is to the right. Nystagmus is named for the fast phase. Thus, warm water in the right ear generates nystagmus to the right. Cold water in the right ear generates nystagmus to the left. COWS = cold opposite, warm same
